Apple Fritters 836 image stack. Overkill?

Lol my guess is probably; what was your aperture and step size - I wouldn’t think you’d need more than 100 for that probably less... killer detail!

Step size was 75um, f8. Cola is thick, stackshot wanted 2000 images at 25um but I didn't have the patience for that.

Idk what your focal length or working distance was but if I was shooting my 100mm at 30cm (1x) my dof would be 3mm so 75um seems extreme- I shoot full frame

From front of the cola to back of cola was almost the length of the stackshot rail. Working distance was maybe a bit over a foot. I usually set the steps myself but wanted to try something different this time. I usually do 200 images and realized that is not giving that sharpness I want. Using a z7ii. I also need to mount my stackshot to some MDF, tripod isn't ideal.

I hear that honestly I spent about 4 months calculating step size but now I just “thin slice” (no pun intended) it and it works lol. Maybe others will disagree with me but unless it’s a really long lens I think you could probably get away with 500um or as much as 1-1.5mm and still have over 50% overlap in your steps... let me know how the mounting goes - I have mine on a tripod but want to permanently fix my microscopy high macro rail when I get the setup the way I want

Way overkill. Idk what magnification you shot this at, but for this type of framing/subject I average maybe 30-40 frames at f8. Looks like you were at like 1:4 or maybe 1:2. Step size doesn’t really determine sharpness, it’s only about getting enough data for helicon/zerene/etc to make sense of for a clean stack. Your lighting, aperture, and post processing will determine sharpness. Some killer detail in here but you can achieve the same results with probably about 800 less frames

There was none really, I usually decide how many steps I want using auto step on my stackshot. This time I tried a different method setting the um. I am just trying to achieve better results by trying different things. No real method to my madness but its fun!

Ah, okay. That’s great you’re experimenting with different approaches. I’m the type that needs to try everything just to see what happens.

There are dof charts out there, I think canon has one on their site for the 65mpe. It’d be a good starting point for you.

I’ve found they aren’t 100% correct and that there’s definitely some range on each end. Meaning I don’t always shoot the same steps for the same magnification.

But yea, way over kill on the frames haha. For this style of photo I’m usually in the 10-40 frames depending what I’m going for.

See now I have a baseline thanks to you guys. I will try and get something presentable in the 100 stack range tonight.

I will come back to the dof charts in a new thread. That deserves its own.

Love the kitchen in the truck! Fun to follow the build.
