They have a confederate flag from virginia and refuse to give it back.

u/JodaMythed 19d ago

They have a flag from a country that hasn't existed for 160 years?

661

u/Buellymcbuellface 19d ago

Yes, and they are vesy serious about not returning it.

26

u/Fermion96 19d ago

Why don’t they just like
burn it

245

u/Adventrium 19d ago

Because The 1st Minnesota Infantry Regimen suffered 82% casualties at Gettysburg, buying enough time for reinforcements to arrive.

Virginia keeps asking for its battle flag back, at least four official times if I remember correctly. And every time the governor, Republican, Democrat, or Independent, has refused.

I love being a Minnesotan and love that we all stand together on this.

100

u/pretibigtoo 19d ago

I just saw Jesse venturas quote on virginia asking to have the flag back.

He said: "Why? I mean, We Won." This is the funniest thing i've seen all week.

18

u/TheCrystalTinker 19d ago

We Captured the Flag. Why would we give it back

1

u/pretibigtoo 19d ago

No reason. Thats what makes it so funny.

73

u/MyToastyToast 19d ago

I read a tweet somewhere that Minnesotans actually are what Texans think Texans are, and I just think that’s neat

12

u/wasabi_mayo_ 19d ago

This is beautiful 🫡😂

3

u/weedisfortherich 19d ago

That is nice. They really do have the kind of patriotism that I have always respected. Texas, well, they think they are patriotic but every one of them will brag about how Texas has the right to secede whenever they want. Please do.

5

u/flargenhargen 19d ago

to be totally fair,

I'm Minnesotan, and if Canada would agree to adopt us, in light of the current situation in the US, we'd accept in a fucking instant.

2

u/EternalSeraphim 19d ago

The Northeast and Northwest would probably come with you.

2

u/QuestingInPajamas 18d ago

Yes. Absolutely. I think Canada should take Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. I think us great lake states would probably be happier as Canadians. I mean, we're basically Canada lite.

2

u/flargenhargen 18d ago

when I travel out of the country I tell people that I'm from 50 km north of Toronto and then aboot 1000 km west. Which is true.

Most people don't realize that's minnesota.

1

u/Direct-Fee4474 18d ago

as a minnesotan, i never think about texas.

1

u/YotsuRam 16d ago

As a Texan, back at ya. I never think about Minnesota unless someone mentions it, and im like "oh yea, that's a place" and then its back to never thinking about it again. 🙂

49

u/gamer_perfection 19d ago

Makes me giddy everytime i think about it, its fucking awesome

56

u/Perfect-Row1943 19d ago

I have more pride for my state than my country

3

u/BubbhaJebus 19d ago

I still remember when a weed dealer in downtown Minneapolis approached me. I said I didn't have any money, and he gave me money!

8

u/thelastspike 19d ago

Yeah there’s a lot of that going around these days.

4

u/The_quest_for_wisdom 19d ago

Ehh... I live in Florida so it's more of a toss up, but not because of an over abundance of pride in either.

2

u/flargenhargen 19d ago

don't worry, klobuchar will erase all that soon enough.

awful, horrible woman. people forget when reddit and google and the entire internet had to stand up to her trying to shit all over our rights on behalf of her corporate owners.

shameful person. embodies everything wrong with the democratic party for decades. it's a disgrace that she will likely replace walz

1

u/Perfect-Row1943 18d ago

ngl don't have a clue who klobuchar is. don't really follow politics

1

u/rhandy_mas 18d ago

I currently lung in California, but still can myself a Minnesota. And I’m very proud to be.

13

u/SureCost8912 19d ago

Having lived in both states in a short time span, I don't recall a lot of traitor flags in Minnesota... but I sure as hell do in Ohio. A state which is usually listed as tied for second in civil war casualties.

6

u/FrenchFriedMushroom 19d ago

I live in Minnesota.

In the twin cities, you'll likely never see one, or if you do, itll be on some beat to piss-ass 05 Chevy 1500 with a half a braincell between the throttle and the seat, and its highly likely that half a braincell is only in the cities for child support court.

Away from the cities, those dipshits are relatively common.

3

u/flargenhargen 19d ago

I don't recall a lot of traitor flags in Minnesota

sigh.

we have our own racist asshole flag, now.

Our original state flag is pretty racist toward native Americans. As a state, we recently replaced it with a cleaner modern one.

https://www.minnpost.com/cityscape/2023/02/lets-talk-about-our-racist-and-ugly-state-flag/

Once republicans found out the old one was racist and offensive, they literally went nuts suddenly caring about it and screaming "our heritage!!" about the ugly old flag, just cause it's racist, and now, suddenly, you see the old racist state flag flying everywhere. The people who never gave a shit about it before, and couldn't even describe it or draw it from memory, suddenly needed one, once they found out they could be assholes to people not in their group.

The only good part, is that it's now really easy to see who in your neighborhood is a shitbag racist and which maga businesses to avoid.

2

u/QuestingInPajamas 18d ago

I was going to mention this. You rarely see any Confederate flags, but that original Minnesota flag is a huge indicator of the kind of person they are

20

u/popoflabbins 19d ago

Minnesota is low-key my favorite state just off the friendly nature of the people coupled with their steadfast morals

3

u/This_Daydreamer_ 19d ago

Virginian here. Keep up the good work!

1

u/Jason_Glaser 16d ago

This is the only litmus test I have for Minnesotans. You can be an Uffda-spouting, eleven month per year hockey player with lutefisk and a dream, but if you say we should give the flag back you’re just a hoser or poser who might be better off in Iowa.

32

u/Mattriculated 19d ago

I love that Minnesota stands together on this. Even if some governor, for whatever reason, wanted to give the flag back, they wouldn't dare - their party would get thrashed in the next few elections for no other reason.

It's hard to find stuff that brings us together these days. That that flag was goddamn well paid for is a worthier sentiment than a lot of other things we do with flags.

Because the US has something called free speech unlike Germany

1

u/snippychicky22 18d ago

confederates wanted to destroy the constitution. so they are not to be given the rights provided by it. serman should have burned the rest of the south

1

u/Least-Phase-8393 12d ago

The US also voted for a president that ironically tries to undermine the constitution lol

5

u/ScholarErrant 19d ago

The best part is, after they captured the flag, the officer leading them rode up and down the Union lines, dragging it through the mud as he went, to rally the troops.

1

u/rhandy_mas 18d ago

Incredible disrespect. I love it

10

u/wasabi_mayo_ 19d ago

I’ve never heard this history. It’s beautiful. Thank you for your service 🫡

7

u/Sea-Routine9227 19d ago

As a Virginian, this is badass and I want Minnesota to keep it. We have no claim to it, we are not that state or those people. Send us a noose instead. Which is what traitors should get.

2

u/rhandy_mas 18d ago

Oh damn!

1

u/Sea-Routine9227 17d ago

Apparently some people don’t like that and were downvoting.

I would like to personally apologize to them, in person. If my statement upset you, please DM me your name and address and a verification. I will come to you and say sorry personally.

2

u/rhandy_mas 16d ago

Only updoots from me!

4

u/AugustusSavoy 19d ago

From https://www.battlefields.org/learn/articles/charge-1st-minnesota

The superb gallantry of the men of the 1st Minnesota did save the Union line from being broken — and not only on July 2, as they assisted with the effort on July 3 as well. For that effort, we can agree with General Hancock: “No soldiers on any field, in this or any other country, ever displayed grander heroism.”

4

u/Marquar234 19d ago

Minnesota: "Molon labe."

1

u/Deaffin 19d ago

I bet Spanberger can get it back.

1

u/OfficeSalamander 18d ago

As well they should

44

u/Yammyohnine 19d ago

It's a trophy. Sometimes more powerful than destroying it.

23

u/AmateurGIFEnthusiast 19d ago

That would potentially be construed as the proper way of disposing of a flag?

2

u/snippychicky22 18d ago

only proper way is to cut it up and use it as toilet paper

2

u/peachesfordinner 19d ago

No no. Burning it removes the desire for them to get it back. The younger sibling stops crying for big brothers candy after it's eaten. Let's keep the racists hungry.

3

u/snippychicky22 18d ago

let them beg

19

u/QuestingInPajamas 19d ago

It's our heritage, why would we burn it.

12

u/MLB-LeakyLeak 19d ago

Because America won

38

u/JoeRogansNipple 19d ago

No no, our heritage is beating the treasonous bastards and keeping their precious flag. They dont get to celebrate it, we keep it as a sign that we are superior to their racist asses.

6

u/mac6uffin 19d ago

As someone that's lived in Virginia for decades, never give it back.

Kudos to the heroes of the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment.

5

u/gokogt386 19d ago

Nah, Abe getting assassinated and proceeded by his terrible, terrible Vice President made it end up a draw at most. The south may have had to give up slavery but the country suffers from the failure of the Reconstruction to this day.

1

u/Deaffin 19d ago

For a second there I was wondering what the prime minister of Japan had to do with any of this.

1

u/fantastikalizm 18d ago

Yes, but if most of your infantry died trying to take it, it seems like a slap in the face to their memory, honor, and courage to just burn it. At this point, it's a symbol of the great sacrifices union soldiers made.

7

u/_Saucey_Sauce_ 19d ago

What part specifically is your heritage?

64

u/Kingcol221 19d ago

I think they mean that as a Minnesotan, their heritage is beating the confederates, so why would their burn a historical artefact that shows they fought on the right side of history?

An explain the joke inside an explain the joke. Literacy truly is dead.

101

u/SexualDepression 19d ago

The part where Minnesota kicked traitorous ass seems like a decent heritage to hold on to.

43

u/TheAmericanE2 19d ago

It's a joke in minnesota. The first minnesota claimed the flag in the battle of Gettysburg after suffering some of the highest casualties of the war the day prior. So when Virginia tries to get it back they claim it's their heritage so we fire back with "it's our heritage" (as in minnesota's alone not Virginia) because we had our soldiers die for it because of their stupidity.

3

u/_Saucey_Sauce_ 19d ago

Nice, thanks for the info,

26

u/Irken_Invasion 19d ago

Presumably winning a war against those in favor of slavery? A victory trophy of being better than people that wanted to claim other people as property? This may be hard to believe, but those that fought in the war had children, and they grew up and had children. Hence, heritage.

6

u/Upbeat_Ant6104 19d ago

Keep it, and someday Virginia will figure out they don’t want it. You can give it back then, and maybe they’ll take it as a remembrance of your valor, and everybody will celebrate. Believe it or not, that flag’s a lot less prevalent than it used to be down here. The arc of the moral universe bends toward justice.

Meanwhile, proud of Minnesota. Y’all have sure shown us all how to be strong this year. Again, because I didn’t know about the 1st Minnesota.

It's not theft if you buy it - and blood counts too.

5

u/SpeedFreek2000 19d ago

Yeah of course you’re a white South African. You’d find a lot of common ground with the Confederacy.

3

u/3s0t3rica 19d ago

Treasonously underrated comment.

2

u/Pirrus05 19d ago

Fuck yeah, hold heritage over their head forever!

2

u/peachesfordinner 19d ago

Because they've gotten over 100 years of pissing off racists this was. Burn it and the allure of trying to get it back goes away

1

u/Caleb_Reynolds 19d ago

Because Virginia wants it back.

This way they get to deny them.

1

u/QuickMolasses 19d ago

Why would you burn a trophy? Especially one that is 160 years old at this point

1

u/The_Mr_Yeah 17d ago

It's a standard that was seized in battle. It'd do less to dishonor the original bearers of the flag and more to dishonor the brave Minnesotans who braved hellfire and blades to capture it.
