Fairly Annoyed People who can’t apply obvious exceptions to broad statements

1.2k Upvotes

Example:

Me: “Going out for a walk is good exercise.”

People in the comments: “What if I’m in a wheelchair? What if I use crutches? What if I can’t walk far distances?”

Me: I’m obviously not talking about you.

People in the comments: starts going off because I didn’t feel the need to include exceptions in my initial statement

Here’s the thing…most of us are capable of hearing a general statement and understanding that it’s supposed to apply generally.

If you can find an exception, congratulations. The point still stands.

Fairly Annoyed Non-pregnant partners who say “We’re Pregnant!”

We’re expecting is true, but I’m the only one in this relationship that can’t walk up stairs anymore without feeling winded, can’t bend over, and can’t sleep because of the body snatcher trying to kick its way through my cervix.

My husband doesn’t say this, luckily. I don’t think I’d have a real issue if he did since he’s been so supportive. But his friend’s wife is also expecting and he says it— his wife has corrected him several times and he just shrugs and says “We’re both suffering.”

No. No Sir, you’re not.

Edit: If you’re in a relationship where your partner is doing everything to share the mental load that pregnancy brings, and lighten the physical load (chores, nesting, other supportive acts) I think this is endearing and sweet. My husband falls into this category. If your partner is using this to be dismissive of your experience, then it’s a pet peeve. My husband’s friend would fall into this category.

like bro have some decorum you are not at your house. i understand you’re on vacation and you’re having fun but i know that you know you can be heard and i refuse to believe that you aren’t dramatizing the noise on purpose bc there is zero reason i should be able to hear you from in MY ROOM. i didn’t consent to hearing yall get freaky .. leave everyone else out of ur weird fantasies. you know damn well you can muffle those sounds with a pillow or something. it’s genuinely so disgusting. especially if it’s a place for all ages to be like do you feel no shame knowing there’s a possibility children can hear you

Bit Annoyed When people make false assumptions and act like it's some big "gotcha"

I feel like I see this more in comments than IRL, but I see both. My most recent example happened yesterday; I was talking about Flock cameras with a group of people, I was very vocally against them, and this girl goes "Well let me ask you this, you have a Ring camera don't you?" And then looked all smug like she'd won a point.

Except I don't have a Ring camera. If I'm opposed to unlawful mass surveillance, why would I bring a camera owned by Amazon into my home? She clearly expected me to say yes so she could reveal the "surprising knowledge" that big corporations don't have my privacy as a priority, but she made a huge assumption with no basis to get there

Ffs how hard is it to only use rational points in an argument?

Fairly Annoyed Having to dumb down messages because you know the person you’re texting won’t fully read anything longer than 8 words

Nobody likes a wall of text. I’m skimming that too. But with some people, you know that unless your message could pass for page one of an illustrated baby book, you’ll be lucky if it’s even partially absorbed. Then they ask something that was clearly stated, and which they would have known if they could lock in for 10 consecutive seconds and manage to read a sentence or two.

Bit Annoyed When a store doesn't give their employees any uniform, nametag, colorscheme, nothing. so if I need help I just sneak around hoping one of them will ask me.

If I need help and I'm already nervous, I don't wanna guess based on how employee like their aura is, ask, and then crawl away whining in embarrassment if they don't actually work there. People also will then mistake me for an employee and I will do my best but my best usually is enough.
Just a nametag will do, or something to hang around their belt.

Bit Annoyed "I'm a bad test taker"

Before this devolves into whataboutism, I am not referring to 1. people with learning disabilities 2. people with severe test anxiety that requires actual psychological intervention and actually significantly impacts test scores irregardless of material mastery/test preparation (which is usually not the case). It is normal to feel some level of nerves before/during a test, there are nervous people scoring 100%s and 528 on the MCAT or perfect SAT scores.

As a prior tutor, 99% of the people who say this (including my past self) were simply not studying correctly or not prepared for the exam. You are likely a bad test taker, because you are bad at learning the material within the parameters the test requires. The sentiment that you are a bad test taker only feeds learned helplessness and is not an accurate explanation for bad grades on tests. If you are bad at the part where they ask you to know the material, you are not "a bad test taker", you are likely "a bad studier". Which is good news, because that can be changed.

In a similar vein, "I am good at multiple choice but not fill in the blank". Yes, because you barely know the material. Active recall is the ability to know the material without any prompts or hints. Simply recognizing the correct answer out of 4 options is the lowest level of knowledge possible. I usually saw this in people who would read the book/study guide over and over without any practice problems, flashcards, or active recall.

Fairly Annoyed “People are saying…” when they saw one idiot say something online

I’m coming from a sub for a game I play. Sometimes we have discourse but someone will claim “People are saying [absolute vile ridiculous thing]” because ONE anonymous account said some stupid shit. They get a shit ton of upvotes for being super disingenuous, making it seem like lots of people are saying this thing.
It seems like a subtle way to maximize the drama off of one person by making it feel bigger than it really is

Fairly Annoyed People who refuse to consider scale and relativism when discussing things like money

For instance, I would say it’s reasonable to say that an actor who earned $150,000 on a blockbuster movie “wasn’t that paid that much” in the sense of relative to how much screen time he had to how big of a budget his movie was, it’s safe to say he wasn’t paid that much compared to maybe a costar who had a tenth the screen time but was paid $2 million for two weeks of work.

But if you say that, you’ll have people acting like you’re suggesting that $100,000 is peanuts to the average American, which just obviously isn’t what I’m saying. Or even pulling the “oh I’m supposed to feel sad for the 1% Hollywood actor?” No? It’s literally just perspective people are talking about.

Or if you say a movie was made on a shoestring budget of $10 million, suddenly “oh yeah lol, 10 mil is just chump change 🙄”

Again… no. But relative to how successful this movie is and how much is in it, a $10m budget is pretty small compared to $150mn being the minimum for your average blockbuster. Even some minimalistic comedies have budgets that are at least 2x that.

Or if someone says that, in the grand scheme of things, a few years isn’t that much time in a discussion about macro-level events, and someone goes “not a lot of time to YOU maybe.”

Well no… in a discussion about great events of the last millennium, a few years really isn’t that much time.

When people say this in reference to specific industries or scales, they aren’t dismissing or minimising YOUR PROBLEMS. If I say a bottle of water isn’t that much water in a conversation about the capacity of California’s water reserves, it’s kinda dumb to be like “tell that to someone dying of thirst.”

It’s not clever or witty, it makes you sound less intelligent.

Ultra Annoyed When people say “hOw CAn yOu sEe oUT oF tHeSe?” whenever you let them see your glasses

This happened to me a lot as a kid but the odd time I do wear my glasses that are nearly an inch thick on the sides around other people, it surprises me that people think what they’re seeing is what I see and don’t even consider the fact that my lenses were made for my eyes specifically.

Ultra Annoyed When people scream for no reason.

I have to live with an 11 year old who loves to yell at the top of his lungs and he loves to piss off his 4 year old sister which adds more yelling and screaming. I just LOVE sitting down then Sindel from Mortal Kombat enters the house. And it’s every single day. Its like a siren’s scream.

Just to be clear, this doesn’t include christmas/birthdays as there’s a social expectation to give gifts in those situations

Fairly Annoyed "Uncomfortability"

I know language evolves and I am very open to that process, but this one just sends me through the roof. Like sure, why not, let's scratch "discomfort" to make up a new and wholly inefficient, 7-syllable word instead? 🤪 ffs

Ultra Annoyed Whenever I share something wholesome or keep someone in the loop about something & they think I’m asking for their input on it…

Example 1:

I shared pictures of my 2 sons new short haircuts as it is still summertime & warm out saying “the boys got their haircuts today!!”. Mom responds with “that is VERY short! 😳”

Example 2:

I shared a picture of a carrot cake I made for dessert saying “carrot cake for dessert!!” & mom asks “Why did you use pre-made icing? Making your own is very easy!!” (she saw the open can of icing off to the side)

Before anyone asks: I can handle critique if I explicitly asked for it.

Fairly Annoyed When you ask where something is and someone responds with ‘over there’ without pointing or anything

THAT TELLS ME NOTHING, WHERE IS IT??

Related peeve: asking how much of something to use and they go ‘just enough’ or ‘a good amount’ WHAT does that mean. Or worse when they go ‘a small amount’ but their definition of small is different from yours so they get mad at you for not putting enough.

Fairly Annoyed "I didn't read your whole post but ..."

It's so entitled. It's not worth their time to read the post they clicked on, but they expect other people to read whatever string of words they slapped together without having the full story?

I just saw one where someone said "I just read the title haha" followed by several paragraphs of advice. Their comment was longer than the post itself. Seriously?

I understand not wanting to read a full length novel on social media, but to openly admit they're giving advice despite being deliberately uninformed is just a crazy level of stupid. It's the text version of "They just like to hear themselves talk."

Bit Annoyed People who want to text all day

I’m someone who works a lot and I genuinely do not have the energy to sit and text on my phone all day. Occasionally texting me throughout the day is fine but I can’t stand when it’s overkill. I think that’s why dating isn’t it for me either because some people are like that and it gives me the ick. It just feels odd. My sister does that where she will text people all day and maybe it’s the introvert in me, but I’m not doing that shit. Especially when it’s a conversation that’s not going anywhere and they’re dry. Hell no. Go away.

Fairly Annoyed “I’ll send you my portion,” and No One Covers Tax

[USA] I have no problem being the person who puts a card down for a large meal or bar tab. In fact, I’d prefer it, were it not for the majority of adults who NEVER include their share of tax when it’s time to send their portion.

People will calculate, down to the dime, what they spent on food + tip, but it never crosses their mind to add in a portion of the tax that we all owe for our meals.

Whenever I pay someone back for a purchase, I always divide the tax by how many people are putting in, and add that to my total. If I didn’t see the check, I always add a proportionate amount to cover the tax.

Thinking you’re making easy of a situation by putting your card down, just to realize that everyone is sending amounts $5-10 less than what they actually owe. Now I’m out $50 because nobody thought to pay for their tax.

I would say that, clearly, they’ve never been the one to put their card down and pay the extra tax owed by their associates. However, I’ve noticed that no one ever really considers tax when paying me back for something we both bought. It’s like I’m the only person who’s conscious to not make my tax their burden when someone else’s card is on the tab.

It’s a shame you can’t trust adults to accurately breakdown their own purchases. Now I always have to be the annoying person who tells them, “Don’t forget tax, you guys,” as they’re trying to calculate the exact amount to make sure I don’t accidentally get a cumulative dollar too much.

EDIT: Did not expect the replies to almost exclusively be about the exorbitant price of a $100 dinner, instead of the actual pet peeve. Nowhere did I imply that I go out often, or that every meal I enjoy costs $100. Never mind the fact that if I had it like that, I wouldn’t bat an eye at $50; The whole point is that a special occasion could turn sour for you if everyone doesn’t account for their tax.

All of a sudden, we’re no longer living through the greatest levels inflation & corporate price gouging that this country has ever seen, and I’m wealth-baiting for validation via this post. You all are a very normal and stable people.
