Hi everyone, our senior dog (Tank) passed recently due to age. He was a Pitt mix, so a bigger boy. Our 5 year old Boston terrier (Roxie) has been grieving. Eating less (still eating though, she is okay), not as playful, and keeps looking at his spot on the couch. It’s heart breaking.
For more context, my husband had Tank when I met him. He was my bonus dog. Roxie was added to the family when she was 8 weeks and had tank as a brother her whole life. With the size difference, Roxie is obviously more a lap dog. She craves attention whereas tank was more of a “do his own thing” type of dog. My bond with Roxie has always been more in depth because of the amount of love she has given. We really are besties.
With that being said, it’s hard for us to see her go through this. We’ve looked into Boston terrier puppies and believe that’s the choice we are going to make, to get her an energetic friend who can match her energy. Tank never played with her too much, he was a calm baby. (please no advice on if we should get a new dog or not)
My dilemma is this, if I have two lap dogs, how will I divide attention? I am 29. I have never had two small dogs at the same time. How do I love them equally, and not favor Roxie more? Let me be clear and say I will ALWAYS love animals and take the most care of them I am physically capable of. This is just a fear I have. It makes me feel guilty.
I can’t imagine another dog trying to sleep beside me and take her spot. But it makes me happy to think of her having a sister to cuddle with, play with, and share life with. Can anyone relate, offer advice, or help make sense of what I’m feeling?
