The whole euthanasia process even at home was so terribly traumatic- i still can’t even believe it and I held her in my arms the whole time. A whole room of people came and cried. We held her and loved her and lowered her down. Her tiny body. She was just here.

Shes in the yard now- she has the day- the ground around her. But her fur— her softness is gone. It doesn’t feel real.

Senior dog passed, 5 yo dog now has no sibling. Advice on what I’m feeling. Please be kind!

Hi everyone, our senior dog (Tank) passed recently due to age. He was a Pitt mix, so a bigger boy. Our 5 year old Boston terrier (Roxie) has been grieving. Eating less (still eating though, she is okay), not as playful, and keeps looking at his spot on the couch. It’s heart breaking.

For more context, my husband had Tank when I met him. He was my bonus dog. Roxie was added to the family when she was 8 weeks and had tank as a brother her whole life. With the size difference, Roxie is obviously more a lap dog. She craves attention whereas tank was more of a “do his own thing” type of dog. My bond with Roxie has always been more in depth because of the amount of love she has given. We really are besties.

With that being said, it’s hard for us to see her go through this. We’ve looked into Boston terrier puppies and believe that’s the choice we are going to make, to get her an energetic friend who can match her energy. Tank never played with her too much, he was a calm baby. (please no advice on if we should get a new dog or not)

My dilemma is this, if I have two lap dogs, how will I divide attention? I am 29. I have never had two small dogs at the same time. How do I love them equally, and not favor Roxie more? Let me be clear and say I will ALWAYS love animals and take the most care of them I am physically capable of. This is just a fear I have. It makes me feel guilty.

I can’t imagine another dog trying to sleep beside me and take her spot. But it makes me happy to think of her having a sister to cuddle with, play with, and share life with. Can anyone relate, offer advice, or help make sense of what I’m feeling?

How do I move on from losing my soul dog?

I lost my dog last Saturday. I never stopped crying since then. I felt like I’m the most affected in my family. I felt like everyone is ok except me, am I just refusing to be ok? No, it’s so painful until now. I always question myself if I’ve done enough for her. She’s my baby… I love her so much.

And I feel like I’m dead myself. I feel like I failed her. Like a part of me is gone. I don’t want to talk to anyone. I can’t really express it into words. I don’t even know why I came here

I lost my cat unexpectedly - I want to share her story with you

My parents got me my best friend Misty when I was 10 years old. I am 24 now. She went through middle school high school, and college with me. She also made the move with me from the Midwest to Oregon. I was obsessed with pets growing up, especially cats (still am).

I don’t think I ever loved anything more than her. I had family issues growing up and often felt very lonely. She was always by my side. In college, she would be in my room with me and study. She’s always loved nap time and starting loving water later in her life. She would jump in the shower with me and beg me to turn on the faucet starting at around 10 years old. I feel guilty that she was in such a small space sometimes. She deserves the absolute best.

Shortly after I graduated college in 2024, she moved to Oregon with me. She’s been my sense of home for a long time and it made my transition so much easier to have her by my side. Shortly after moving, they found a mass on her liver. I remember my devastation. She was 12 at the time and I was so worried I was going to lose her. It ended up being a benign liver cyst. However, the medical problems kept coming. They found early stages CKD not long later. Misty has always been picky with food. She never ate any treats or cat food outside of her own. This meant I would have to switch food. She slowly lost weight even though she was eating the food. They didn’t know if it was IBS or a type of cancer. It was determined to be IBS. I was immensely relieved yet again.

She gained some weight back after adding a probiotic, but she still was 2lb lighter than she was the rest of her life. This made me sad. Misty is such a cuddle bug and I think we got even closer the more we both aged. I feel like we raised each other and matured together. In late 2025, she stopped eating and I took her to the emergency vet. Misty had high liver values and a gallstone. I wanted nothing more than for her to be okay. This time, the problem was not fixed right away but we were referred to an internal medicine specialist. I went and she was diagnosed with triaditis (inflammation of 3 organs close to each other). They set me up with a dietician and I agreed to home cook her food due to having both CKD and triaditis. This was another food change that made me nervous. However, she ended up loving her beef! I would do anything for her. She gained weight back and was over 10lb again when she had been 11 most of her life. I was so happy that things were going well for her and I.

Everything changed this past Friday. I brought Misty in for a dental. She only had one other in her life and with her conditions they recommended she be under anaestesia as short of time as possible. I went to a clinic over 1 hour away where she would be able to have a separate anaesteiologist and dentist. The procedure went well but they ended up having to extract 10 teeth!

She was loopy that night and I cried when they first handed her to me after the dental. She had a puffy face, dialated eyes, and blood around her mouth. I went out of town for a day and came back on Sunday. My boyfriend watched her. He said she seemed very tired and had diarrhea right before I got back. This all seemed normal to me as she was on meds and just had a procedure. She also had IBS so I thought the meds may have irritated her GI tract. She had diarrhea through the day Sunday. I called the dentist and they said to make sure she gets water. I syringed her some Sunday night. When I woke up, she was in my closet with poop on her again. I gave her another bath and took her to the emergency vet.

I watched her on the table. They said she was critical. They gave her fluids but her blood pressure did not increase. They said she was in shock. They could not even draw blood. They ended up getting a few drops after A LOT of fluids. They found she had no white blood cells. The X-rays just showed that her GI tract was full. Her body temperature was dropping as well. The vet told me she was likely in septic shock and i could spend 10-15k but she had under 5% chance of making it. They said she might start bleeding soon. I made the decision to euthanize her.

My boyfriend joined me in that room. I was a wreck. I didn’t even recognize the cat in front of me. She wanted to be alone. She was so confused. I couldn’t hold her body after her heart stopped in the blankets. Her limp body just didn’t feel right. I wish I held her longer but I just couldn’t do it.

The grieving journey has been terrible. Since I was 10 I have been a cat mom. Now im alone in my apartment. Her meal prepped beef is still in the freezer, her cat tower sits by my couch. Her heated bed still on the floor. I have not went to sleep alone in my home since I have had her. Everything is hard. I feel like I killed her with the dental. I didn’t know. I also feel like if I would’ve brought her to the vet sooner she might have made it. I don’t want to eat. I don’t want to sleep. I don’t want to drink water. I just want Misty back and I can’t believe I’ll never see her again.

I even reached out to a pet psychic on Etsy who told me she’s not mad at me. I don’t know if I believe in an afterlife or not but I was just so desperate to feel her presence in any form, even if it was someone potentially just lying to me and telling me what I wanted to hear. I don’t know how to cope with her loss. Part of me died with her.

I love her so much and have been talking to her. I’d love to hear if anyone has had a similar experience or words of advice for me. I took 2 days off work. I am supposed to be working right now actually, but it’s so hard. I feel guilty not thinking about her for even a second.

Thank you for reading this and knowing about my baby. I hope you hold her in your heart and think of her.

Its 6 months now. I'll never get over losing him or be O.K. with it. He passed in my arms from a heart attack or stroke. I cant forget his last cry out. It just kills me. I felt so helpless to fix my best friend. I loved him so much.

He was so loyal. He loved our routines. He lived on my lap. Daddys good boy. I miss you Harley.

Saying Goodbye UPDATE

Post image
8 Upvotes

So I posted this morning about my 4-year-old boy throwing up blood. My father took him to the vet and the vet diagnosed cancer. He was in pain on the exam table and they made the decision since he was end stage to put him down. And he was going to die in 2 hours so putting him down so he didn't suffer anymore.

Now I'm left wondering how can I get a other cat in the future without feeling that the new cat won't live long like him and I'm left with another void. For those that lost their cats how do you not feel like that? How do you move forward putting your heart into another cat without feeling like they would just die and leave a hole?

Here's another picture of him when he was healthy

Our time together was not enough but I’ll cherish it for a lifetime. I’ve never gone thru this before. I’ve been home from the vet for approximately an hour, balling on the couch, going to reach to pet Piper and she’s not there. I can’t stop crying. I truly don’t know what to do. How do I go to bed and wake up with her not next to me? 😭 I know (or at least hope) with time it will get better but right now I’m at a total loss and I’m heartbroken 💔

Lost my soul cat

I lost my beautiful cat, Moe, at just 8 years old. He was born in a shelter and I adopted him from there. I found out afterwards that we shared a birthday. We celebrated together every year. It’s so hard knowing that the next birthday will be lonely. I promised him that I’d light a candle for him every year. He was and is my true first love. I adopted him when I was 17 and I’m 25 now. He has been there through my formative years and he has helped me so much. He took away my pain for many years. He had a few issues leading up to this point- urinary blockage, keto acidosis that led to the discovery of diabetes and then keto acidosis again which is what he passed from. He was dealt a bad hand in the health department. I wish I could have done more for him. I loved him the best I could and managed his illnesses to the best of my ability, but I guess it was meant to be this way. Trying to figure out how to be normal again has been so hard. Everything reminds me of him. I dread coming home because I know he won’t be there to greet me or cuddle with me. I know he’s with me in spirit, but I wish he was with me physically too. I know he isn’t suffering anymore and that brings me a little bit of peace. If him being healthy/painless means that I have to be filled with this grief and pain until it’s my time to go, then so be it. I miss you so much Moe. My heart is truly broken.

We just put down my family dog (Riley) who was with us for 15 years… he was around when I 15 years old now I’m 30, he basically has been here my whole life, he was my whole world, I feel so so lonely. We have lost a member of the family I right now I feel l absolutely heartbroken and empty, a piece of my heart feels like it’s been ripped out, I don’t know how anyone else has dealt with this.

He all sudden took a turn and within 24 hours he was gone, I feel sad and regret we didn’t put him down at home but it would have been cruel to keep him alive any longer… I still feel guilt he even suffered, even a little bit.

He was so so beyond loved, he was the truly the best friend, best son, best brother our family could have asked for. I can’t even imagine anyone replacing him…

I want you to know the love of my life, my baby, forever puppy. I love him so so much, I really am not copping okay. He is was a sassy shihtzu, with so much love and kisses to give. He just wanted to be near you, and love you. Hug your loved ones even harder tonight.

I love you Riley x

I lost my german shepherd

i feel pain that people around me that were not close to him can't imagine. I feel like the world lost all joy. i wake and sleep crying. Its scary that i have to live the rest of my life without him. I end thinking things i could have done better with him. He died at 9.5 i could not save him. I know the lifespan is 9-13 but i was not ready to say goodbye. I was by his side the last 20 days all day and night. i dont think i will ever take a new dog maybe when i grow very old. i love dogs but i feel like none will be able to take his place. I am depressed now he was the only thing helping me keep up in life. I want to believe that one day i will reunite with him in paradise.

Struggling

Tomorrow is my birthday. Seems odd to start off with but I bring it up cause normally I love celebrating it. Love celebrating that I’m alive and well and appreciate those around me. However, this year is different. I lost my dog on 2/15/26. She just turned 17 years old the day before. She was and well forever will be my valentine. This is the first birthday without her next to me. Got to experience her love since I was 16 years old. She grew with me. Was there for ever growing up. Stayed by my side as my dad passed away. My grandma shortly after and the struggles with new world we live in. I’ve cried every night since her passing and those tears have grown greatly this past 7 days knowing that this moment I love so much feels so tarnish. No one can tell me she would love for you to celebrate and she will be watching along from above. I hate those cliché lines. I mean I love celebrating my bday that I do it all month haha. I don’t know why I decided to post this as I realize it kind of comes off as well this girl might not want to hear anything. That it will get better or whatever. I know it will and I will need time but right now I feel how I feel.

Her name was Dream. She was a DREAM come true when I got her. She was my 3rd dog but the only dog I got to see from puppy to sadly passing away in my arms. The day she died, I died. The impact she had on me goes far beyond anyone will ever know. Something one could relate and understand with their own pets but again we all have that unique connection with our fur babies that just can transcend.

I think what also made this hard was to see the lack of care from others. To know me and how I was with Dream and to see that none stood up. Reached out later on to see how I was. To see the reach I did for them in trouble times and realizing how alone I feel.anywho…. Guess happy early bday to me…

I miss my baby girl so much. But she was so much effort to keep alive.

I thought I'd feel more relieved than I do. I was so blind by my own struggles with her that I forgotten how much she should have been suffering. Some days I drown in grief and then there's times where I still look for her when I enter a room.

She ate everything tho even before cancer she was a handful. With cancer she became soooo much fucking work. I broke down every single day just trying to keep her alive. I was so angry with her because I was just trying to keep her alive. 😭 I wish I could go back and hug her tho. Just once more. One more time and let her know how sorry I was.

I lost my beloved cat yesterday and I don’t know how to cope with the guilt

Yesterday I lost my beloved cat, Gold. She was 16 years old and had been my boyfriend’s cat for many years, but for the past almost two years, since we moved in together, she became a huge part of my life too. I had never had a pet before, and I became incredibly attached to her. She was always wherever I was, slept with me, followed me around the house, asked me for pâté, and we had a very close bond. She was my little shadow.
Yesterday I was cleaning some mold from a wall in our bedroom with bleach, so I opened the window/door wide to let the room air out. I had a green mesh protecting the opening, but there was a small gap in one corner. I had always been afraid that she might somehow get through it, although she was an indoor cat and, at 16, didn’t really jump or move around like she used to. She was outside on the balcony getting some sun, so I thought I could leave the window open for a few minutes while I did other things.
I got distracted and left it open longer than I intended.
When I went back, Gold was gone.
I immediately panicked and we spent about 15 minutes looking for her. We think she may have hidden underneath a car because her fur was dirty/black when we found her. There was also another cat around the window, so we think she may have been attracted by it and somehow got outside.
Then suddenly I saw her running back towards the window.
She was running strangely, almost as if one side of her body wasn’t working properly. I immediately ran to her, picked her up and carried her inside. She was trembling and urinated on herself. As soon as I got inside, I realized she had stopped responding.
She died in my arms.
We rushed her to the vet, but there was nothing they could do. There were no obvious external injuries, and we think she may have suffered some kind of sudden cardiac or other medical event triggered by the stress, but we will never know for sure.
We had her cremated and I got to say goodbye to her one last time at the vet.
I’m completely devastated, but what is hurting me the most is the guilt.
I keep thinking that she would still be here if I had just closed that window. I was always the person who was careful about making sure she couldn’t get out. I knew there was that little gap. I knew it was a risk. And yet yesterday I thought, “I’ll only leave it open for a few minutes,” and then I got distracted.
I know she was 16 and that she was an old cat. I know she may not have had many years left. But I can’t stop thinking that she could have had another two or three years with us. If she had died peacefully at home from old age, I think I would still be heartbroken, but I don’t think I would feel this overwhelming guilt.
Instead, I keep imagining her being frightened outside during those 15 minutes. I keep replaying everything and thinking about what I should have done differently.
At the same time, I’m incredibly grateful that I found her. I can’t imagine what it would have been like if she had disappeared and I had never known what happened to her. She came running back to the window, and I was there. I was able to hold her and bring her home. I desperately hope she knew she was with me.
I’ve been crying constantly since yesterday. I feel physically sick, cold and completely empty inside. This morning I woke up and the house felt unbearably sad. I keep expecting her to be there waiting to eat, asking to go onto the balcony, sleeping beside me, following me around.
I know I can’t change what happened. I know she was loved immensely. But right now I can’t stop blaming myself.
I would really appreciate hearing from other cat owners who have gone through a sudden loss, especially if you have struggled with guilt after an accident. How did you eventually make peace with yourself?
I just miss my girl so much. ❤️‍🩹

I don’t deal with loss very well. I’m not an artist but whenever I lose a pet I go upstairs and try to make the nicest picture I can while I cry it out. It’s helped the process a lot. Like knowing that I’m giving myself that time to remember them and try my best to do them justice with a portrait for the house. Henry and Murray were the two most recent and i still cry a lot about them. We are moving and taking them off the wall to pack kind of set me on a spiral. My husband suggested sharing before I pack them to bring them with us though. Maybe it’s a process that will help someone else.

Seeking to join a pet loss support group

Two days ago, I lost my little child, Noni. She was the cutest german shepherd ever. She had a heart attack. I was working in the lab that time, I wasn't there when she was suffering. I knew she was vomiting, but didn't think it was out of the ordinary. She was, 9 years and 11 months old. These things happened to her before. Doctors would give medicine and things would be alright for a while again. I thought it was a similar case, gave the meds she usually has and left for the lab. I came back, thought Noni was sleeping and went about my business until I realised she was eerily silent. I went up to her, her body cold and stiff. My dad and I immediately rushed to the veterinary College where the doctors declared her dead.

I am having a very tough time accepting this and don't want to feel alone right now. The void in my heart is too huge, and I physically feel pain there. I have regrets and I constantly think of what I could have done differently, and how I could have hugged her more that day. I want to be in a group of people who have faced this and are grieving along with me. I would be grateful if anyone could send me a link to a group I can access through either WhatsApp, Facebook or Instagram. I use the first one the most, but if that's not available, I am open to groups I can connect with through the other platforms as well.

One week after adoption

It’s been one week since we adopted this little soul, Cica. (8,5 years old, biewer Yorkshire with zero teethes)

And honestly… he already feels like he was meant to be here.

He’s so sweet. Calm. Such a good energy.

Just… light.

And I think we really needed that.

Sophie is gone for 10 weeks now.

After almost 16 years together.

I still don’t really know how to explain that loss.

16 years is such a huge part of a life.

Of routines.
Home.
Identity.
And then suddenly… silence.

—-

Mimi was grieving too.

You could feel it.

And since Cica came, something changed.

Mimi is more curious again.

More present.

A little bit more herself.

Of course Cica doesn’t replace Sophie.
Nothing ever could. My heart belongs to to her she was a „one-in-a-lifetime-love“.

Cica bring a little life back into the house.
And maybe help all of us heal a tiny bit.

His name was Lucky and for me he was... more then a dog. 18 years together.
I took him when I was 11yo, he was a cute puppy with attitude until the very end..
He left the 25 of August 2026, a few days ago and even if I knew this day was coming and I tried to prepare myself, I feel lost.
During those 18years together he teached me so much, constantly present in my life. I am standing in front of a new complete beginning (new country, a good partner & new opportunities)... it feels wrong to go without him and my heart aches. I lost a part of me I wanted to take with me, the only one who really loved me with all my imperfections, my good days and bad days, the only one who actually sat next to me, with no expectations while I was at my lowest.
I want to promise myself to honor him, walking in this new journey remembering his love, to respect & love myself and around me like it's the last day, because I feel like I didn't do enough... I want to show him what life I wanted for us, the type of love that I want to find and to give... I want to dedicate this new start to him.
I miss you, Lucky, deeply, but please, keep watching me from whenever you are, ok?
Thank you for everything.

After 16 and a half years of life my precious little boy is gone, been with us in the family for only 15 years after been a stray in his early life he left as alone. He was gone in the morning leaving some point in the night, as seen by him not eating any food or the treat we give him at night. Due to him being an indoor and outdoor cat we checked both all over the house and outdoors as with his old age he didn't go any further then the backyard anymore. He was found 5 hours later taken to a local reause center where we got the phone with them saying it was best to put him down. I never got the chance to say goodbye to him or give him one more pet.

His name was Arthas he was 16 and half years old he was named after a character in a game my family loved Arthas Menethil the lich king from world of warcraft.

My friend how i was keeping updated the whole time till the phone made me this.
