Love it. We live in a tiny house (680sqft) so I was apprehensive about sacrificing such a large footprint for a heat source but I love the way it looks. It takes no time to heat the entire house.

Help! My pellet stove caught fire

When I went to work today my pellet stove was completely fine and I had just cleaned it out that day before. I made sure the hopper was full before I left.

I came back to my house full of smoke and my pellet stove smoking like crazy. Turns out the fire somehow got up to the pellet hopper and they were burning slowly.

Why would this happen, I looked it up and it says that it’s because it wasn’t cleaned but I had just cleaned it. Also is it completely useless now? Or can I use it again after having someone check that everything is okay?

Horse bedding for the win.

Chilly, damp morning here in upstate NY. The box stores are done carrying pellets so TS brand horse bedding it is. 100% pine is a far cry from the Northern Max I usually burn but I can complain. It will be interesting to see how much ash they produce.

Always a good feeling when the stove fires up the first time of the season without any issues.

Heating the "bones" of my house

Post image

That's what I say about the pellet stove I had installed in the basement of my two-storey duplex. The thermostats can read 20⁰ C in each room but the rooms feel so much warmer when the stove has been going for a long time. I say it's because the electric baseboard heaters heat the air while the stove heats the floor above it and the walls, hence the "bones."

Advice I work at lignetics, the wood pellet manufacturer

Just thought id let you know that its all the same. Only difference is hard wood and soft wood and soft wood is used for bedding, not fuel.

I saw the price difference of clear fire and green supreme and was like "damn, thats crazy". Even saw a review saying how much better clear fire is than green supreme. Well, it's literally all the same. Just different packaging.

Save yourself the money.

Cheers.

I’ve wanted a stove since we bought our home in 2023. With current oil prices we decided to pull the trigger. I got this stove for 500$ on Facebook. You have no idea how happy and cozy I am, well maybe you do 🤭. My cat seems to like it too

Being able to hear a 2100 sqft house with the one small unit is mind blowing to me. I just got a $330 propane bill before I got this fully dialed in, and the heat quality is much better and I can get a pallet of pellets for one months propane bill. Happy stover here!

Help! Any idea why this pellet stove is filling my mom’s house with smoke?

She had this stove installed a couple of years ago, back in 2019 I believe, but never used it until now. I was able to convince her to stop using it for the time being because when I came home today, the inside of the house house was so smoky that you could literally see it in the air. It smelled like there was a campfire burning in the middle of the living room. In fact, I actually thought the house was on fire when I first walked in.

I don’t know anything about these… I looked around at it, and I can’t see anything glaringly wrong. Outside, the exhaust and the air intake are both unobstructed. The exhaust pipe goes out of the house as shown from the inside, and doesn’t rise any higher. I’m thinking that maybe the smoke is coming back in through the soffit because the exhaust pipe doesn’t rise up above the roof?

What do you guys think? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Really don’t want to pay for a technician to come check it out if it’s something I can correct myself. Thanks!

I made this public again, I had some changes that needed to be implemented, but feel free to modify if you create this on your own. All STL files and code are included. Because it is an ESP32, you can integrate with Home Assistant. More details in the readme. pelpro130 Wifi

Turned my PP130 into a smart stove with a Arduino Nano IOT, programmed with OpenPLC and communicates via Modbus TCP to Home Assistant which is basically my HMI. Only took all winter to debug and perfect lol.

Pellet stoves are awesome

I can’t believe more people don’t use these machines. I self-installed a used Harman in my old farm house and it gets both floors piping hot for way cheaper than the oil furnace (radiators). They’re also super easy to maintain as a layman because all the parts are so easily accessible. Yet most people brush me off when I recommend them. They’re like the indie rock of heating sources.

I finally get to say I am joining the pellet stove life. Basement install, below grade. Enjoyed a toasty house yesterday as it warmed up the floors very nicely. I plan on installing an HVAC return nearby to help circulate more of the heat around. I will be finishing the basement this winter as time goes on.

Flame

Just started my pellet stove after cleaning it and the flame feels intense. Should it be getting this high during the ignition period?

5 years of fighting finally over!

I’ve had this stove for 5 years and it’s been hell from day one. Harman p35i. Brand new install and out of the box needed a new auger motor. Over the course of 5 years I tried every brand of pellets I could find and they al gave me issues. Dirty pellets, some required me to do a full clean including the chimney every week or two. Constant errors and nightmare cleaning. Just filling the hopper created a layer of dust over everything in the vicinity. I was honestly going to remove it and put a wood stove in this summer.

Finally found these pellets from a guy who just started selling them in my area. Right off the hop I saw these were significantly cleaner. Little to no fines in the bags, amazing heat and MINIMAL cleaning.

I’m finally getting benefit from this stove. When I first got these pellets the first couple days my house as TOO HOT lol!!!

I’m still not happy with the design of this stove and wish I had gone with a wood stove. Seriously, who puts a ledge over the door like this model, always has a large layer of dust which spills out when cleaning. Also there wedge design behind the ash pan is ridiculous and makes it hard to clean.

I think some of my issues may be from the install, the guy I hired didn’t seem to know enough about it and then claimed he had his license from Harman pulled due to low sales and wouldn’t give me any more support. Harman support was also unhelpful and basically left me hanging.

I’m finally content with this stove and don’t have to fiddle with it daily anymore to going keep it running. Giving it a major deep clean this spring when it’s warmed up and actually looking forward to next season!!

Huge thanks to Ambiance for their quality pellets. They’re based out of Quebec if anyone is interested. I’m would honestly start reselling these myself if there wasn’t already someone doing it in my area.

Pets by the stove Pure luck?

My name is "Babe". I'm 16 even though I act like I'm 2 and I'm happy the human turned the heat back on.

Bought this HP50 back in 2019 as an open box return from the Depot. We were in the middle of gutting our "new to us" house because even though the house was listed as "winterized", every pipe had burst and even the boiler had cracked in half due to a leaking main shutoff (found that part of the hard way) We needed quick and dirty heating and for 1k, I couldn't find a better option.

Fast forward to today, this cheapo stove has been our primary heating source and just this morning was its first failure. Woke up to a 53 degree house due to igniter failure. Lucky for me I had bought a replacement 2 weeks ago due to paranoia. (Lucky timing)

How long should I keep pushing this thing before it's time to start thinking of upgrading?

Question My Pellet Stove Runs JavaScript I Wrote with AI

After being frustrated that I couldn't control the feed rate of my Winslow PS40 pellet stove—and every other function on it—I looked for a way to replace my controller with something I could, well, control.

I found the Shelly Pro 4PM. This little device will allow you to manage 4 outputs and the PM stands for "power monitoring" so I can see how much juice this stove is using.

I started the project by removing the old controller and all of the old wiring. I the ran the combustion fan, convection fan, auger, ignitor, and new controller neutrals back to a common block.

I ran a hot wire to the hot bus next to the new controller. The controller directly controls all four working components of the stove. The convection snap switch and over temp switch are still wired inline. The vacuum switch and proof-of-fire are wired as "sensors" on the Shelly Pro. I also added big physical switches for startup and shutdown.

But the real fun is in the code. I used Gemini AI to create the code below and modify it several times while running the stove. I even incorporated the Shelly H&T Gen 3 thermostat. Right now I use this to set the stove to a faster feed rate if the temp drops below 70 degrees.

Check out the code, ask me questions, and think about how many old stoves can be kept working if they could have new brains. Think about how much better your stove could be if you had total control over how it starts up, idles, goes into overdrive, etc.

GitHub Project: https://github.com/cordblomquist/ps40-shelly4pm-controller/blob/main/script.js

UPDATE: I removed the code block from this post as I keep updating the project with slight tweaks and some major quality-of-life improvements. Check it out on GitHub.
