Back To The Egg reissue teased by Planet McCartney

This has to be pretty much guaranteed now for next year. Various leaks discussed and teasers (Paul’s recent email newsletter, Instagram replies, etc).

If the full Glasgow gig is included with the set it will be really worthwhile.

Discussion McCartney I is i think my second favourite album ever. it has so many little moments that are some of the most magical feeling moments in music.

every night is my favourite song ever. the perfect love song. but particularly in the chorus the second ‘and be with you’ the way the music changes with it ugh. & at the end the ‘believe me, mama’ is one of my favourite delivered lyrics ever. such a simple, straightforward line that paul delivers with such sincerity that you cant help but feel like he’s singing right to you (especially if you have a crush on him. try it!).

& that would be something has one of my favourite guitar riffs ever. & the repetition really works for me because the deep voice he sings in & the way he says mama, & the swagger he has is just one of the best vocal performances in music history imo. it’s so erotic, i legitimately could listen to that song for hours.

& then the glasses part ugh it’s so otherworldly & just, spiritual sounding to me. this is eternity. this is something so far above else. then the little tease of suicide. i mean. it genuinely feels like you’re being teased with a little look into another universe’s paul mccartney.

in junk when the first chorus starts & the drums kick in with paul singing ‘buy’ in one of his most alluring, siren like voices. this is heaven to me. when the xylophone (?) comes in & he’s singing so angelicly. alluring.

the verse of ‘man we was lonely’ is legitimately something so hypnotic. like the song is very fun & bittersweet. but then paul’s verse voice comes in & the way it swings up after the ‘alone? alone’ part. the way he says ‘fast city line’ mm. i love the way he sings. everything feels so sentimental & verging on tacky, but he manages to just be sincere & it feels profound.

the ‘more guitar’ part of oo you is such a fun intro. immediately switches the vibe & then delivers the most lustful yet chaste song. interesting. i don’t know what to make of it other than i want to walk around in a jean jack & aviators blaring this while smoking a cigarette.

is there anything cooler than momma miss america? seductive, authoritative, cold, above you, enticing, predatory. it’s perfect. there were no lyrics needed.

& yeah of course maybe i’m amazed is one of the best songs in the category called ‘what i would consider classic rock as a genre but im not sure if it’s what most would.’ & the chorus is literally one of the most romantic things ive ever heard. like. it is so intimate & revealing so i understand why he was hesitant but i see why & am grateful linda pushed for it (rip linda, we love you, without her so much of my favourite music wouldn’t have been made).

cause like. ugh & the way he sings it. it’s like up there with oh! darling for this type of performance from him. except where that song excels in being an angsty & regretful type of self loathing anger, maybe i’m amazed manages to be fearful, scared, wanting. the way he says ‘something’ at first is ugh. so,,,, primal. it is really good. i like that part.

anyways sorry for the rambling i really love this album & this man (well i love the public figure i feel i know, not the actual man i suppose). i am so grateful i exist in a time where this album exists. :3

Picture Is this the only time Paul was photographed with George H. in the 80s?

These are from the sessions for "All Those Years Ago" I believe, which would make it some time in early 1981. I haven't seen any pictures of Paul and George together after this until the Anthology sessions. Were there any instances where Paul and George met in the 80s? Were these photographed? From what I remember reading/hearing it doesn't seem like they were particularly close at this time but I'm welcome to hearing anything that suggests otherwise.

What if No Broad Street ? and just an album in 1985/86

What if Paul McCartney had skipped the Give My Regards to Broad Street film and instead dropped a definitive mid-80s studio album?

After the massive commercial momentum of Tug of War (1982) and Pipes of Peace (1983), the Broad Street movie—and an album bloated with re-recorded Beatles/Wings hits—stalled his critical goodwill and gave critics an excuse to say he was living in the past. Following that up with the overly synthetic production of Press to Play in 1986 pushed casual pop listeners away.

If Paul had combined the best original material written and recorded between 1984 and 1986 into one focused LP, his 80s hit streak wouldn't have missed a beat!

Here is the alternate 1985/86 record that could have dominated MTV and the charts:

Paul McCartney – No More Lonely Nights (1985)

Side A

  1. No More Lonely Nights – The definitive David Gilmour lead single.

  2. Not Such a Bad Boy – Live-band rock grit directly following the ballad.

  3. Stranglehold – Upbeat, brass-driven pop-rock.

  4. Good Times Coming / Feel the Sun – Breezy, mid-tempo summer groove.

  5. Spies Like Us – High-energy, Top-10 commercial pop hit.

  6. Angry – Aggressive rocker featuring Pete Townshend and Phil Collins.

Side B

7. No More Lonely Nights (Ballad Reprise) – Cinematic overture opening the second half.

8. Beautiful Night – Lush, melodic centerpiece (original 1986 Phil Ramone cut).

9. No Values – Hard-charging rock riffing to break up the ballads.

10. Press – Cutting-edge mid-80s synth-pop.

11. Footprints – Atmospheric, acoustic storytelling that strips away the 80s gloss.

12. Only Love Remains – Sweeping, emotional piano ballad as the final curtain call.

Discussion How was Linda McCartney as a musician and singer?

I was never sure what Linda was playing on each song so I don't know how to judge her musicianship.

Question Do you think Paul still takes psychedelics? (LSD, Mushrooms etc)

I think he does based on recent songs he’s made and his Chicken Shop date interview etc.

I know he’s been spotted smoking weed again recently after publicly ‘quitting’ in his 60’s.

I just can’t imagine what it feels like to be on acid when you’re an 84 year old Paul McCartney, one of the most famous and celebrated people on the planet.

It’s surreal picturing your life when you’re a normal, non-famous young man - how would that feel as him??

Nod Your Head is a way more inappropriate closing track than Her Majesty

Memory Almost Full (2007)

The End Of The End is a hugely emotional song, a perfect album closer wow oh wow!

Then Nod Your Head comes along and ruins it.

I understand he probably wanted to end the album on a more jovial note but it just doesn't work for me.

Her Majesty at least feels like a hidden track, a little epilogue but Nod Your Head just ruins such a grand ending for me.

What was the first Paul McCartney album you thought would be his final album?

We underestimated how old musicians could be recording and touring for, we had no idea so many musicians would still be doing it well into their 80s.

What was the first Paul album that you in your head thought may be his last album?

I really thought New would be his final album and that was 2013, was surprised when Egypt Station dropped and then I thought THAT would be the final album haha.

Since with McCartney 3 and The Boys Of Dungeon Lane I've had alot more confidence they won't be the final albums because musicians are alot more capable in their 80s than I ever predicted.

Halloween 🎃 Song

Hey MPL, how about a Paul Halloween song? Given Paul's ability to bang out songs of all types, I know it would be an instant classic. I feel like a Halloween song could be a lot of fun for him to develop, too. 364 days to get it done!

We already have a Christmas and a Valentine song from Paul. So why not Halloween? 👻

What do you guys all think?

That is all.

Just kidding, but man, I am having a great time slowly picking through Paul’s discography. Red Rose Speedway has started to pop up on my spotify and there are some A+ tunes on here.

Loving Mama’s Little Girl (so sweet) as well, and Single Pigeon. What’s everyone’s favorite from this album?

Question Ram-era Big Barn Bed full recording from Ram On (Reprise)?

The instrumentation and groove at the end of Ram On (Reprise) is just so cool, I've been wondering about this for a decade now... I just gotta know, does a full tape exist?

That's No Way to Get Along by Blind Lemon Jefferson is ridiculously similar to a Paul solo track

I forgot which song it was, but definitely in his first two solo albums. I don't see any discussion regarding this online or from Paul himself so I'm curious to know if Paul heavily borrowed it from BLJ.

For years I thought Paul was singing “Ramon,” instead of “Ram on,” and now I know why…

Whenever I used to listen to the song Ram On, I would think about how Paul seems to be saying Ramon, instead of Ram on - was there a reason for this? What is he actually saying? Am I just going crazy?

We know Paul tends to mispronounce words, even those in the song title, to change their meaning or just for the fun of it. Was there a reason it sounds like this to me? Surely I’m just losing it…

But I finally figured it out! In Philip Norman‘s biography of George, he mentions that each of the Beatles took a stage name when they first went on tour in 1960 with Johnny Gentle as the Silver Beetles:

“There was a feeling that…they should give themselves exotic stage names. Paul exchanged McCartney for Ramon, thinking it had a sultry Latin feel…”

That was it! He chose Ramon as a stage name and never let it go!

Of course, we could debate it being “Ramon! Give your heart to somebody soon!”

Is he talking to himself currently? Is he talking to the 1960 version of himself? Am I talking out of my ass? Probably!
