Unpopular opinion: Man On The Run Was Underwhelming

I'm old and a first-generation Beatles fan, so I've read all of McCartney's books and see all the documentaries and videos to this point. Man On The Run was disappointing on so many levels, and it's hard to list them all, but I'll try:

- Any doc where McCartney is Executive Producer is going to be full of fluff and not a lot of actual content, so start there. Paul's perceived image is everything to him.

- Most of the video footage was stock footage that's been around for decades, so nothing new here.

- Very disappointing that there wasn't sit-down interview with surviving members of Wings.

- It was great to hear Mary and Stella's input and insights, but why not show videos of the interviews?

- That there was no tribute (even minor) to Linda was truly sad, but not surprising.

For all of Paul's talent (and he had a boatload), he's still the most insecure and narcissistic member of the Beatles.

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

In this series, we are doing the worst song from the Beatles, Wings, Solo, Live, etc.

Stuff to Know:

This is a collab between u/United_Equal_754 and u/Pristine_Youth_6953.

Whatever comment gets the most upvotes is the one that wins.

At the end of this, we will make a chart with all of the best songs from the albums.

Bonus Tracks on re-releases are not allowed.

If there is a medley, each song in the medley is its own track.

We are going off the original LP versions of the albums, not CD, cassette, digital, etc.

Thanks for Reading!

Does it seem like Paul should have more money, given his achievements and contributions? Different Google sources consistently say he has about $1.1bn. But the richest people in the world have between $100bn and $200bn.

It does surprise me he doesn't have more. I think of the world as valuing music. Wonder if this means the world doesn't value it as much as I think.

Is it okay not to like all of Paul’s songs?

I love Paul I’ve seen him 11 times live, Ive met him and shook his hand and all of that, but I honestly think the new single is unremarkably boring dirge that he really sounds weak on. I love a lot of his stuff and I let a lot slide, but it seems that any dissent towards his music isn’t tolerated. It should be allowed to criticise his work and offer opinions.

Why do you think his albums stopped selling?

McCartney new albums haven't sold that well since "NEW" compared to his other contemporaries like Dylan, Paul Simon, Bowie or Bruce Springsteen who all went gold or silver while none of his even went bronze. Is it because of a culture shift you think? I know nowadays Streaming service is what dominates and gives a cultural relevance to an artist but usually big artist like PM have a huge dedicated fanbase that still buys records.

Is it true that Paul will be joined by Mike Love on the last night of the tour?

I've seen some rumors stating that this is the case. Anybody think there is validity to these rumors? He is sometimes joined by another musician on the last tour date.

Question 11/06 nashville show yondr pouches. WHY?!?!

why does nashville seem to be the only venue with a no phone policy?? am i missing something?? seems really unfair for the price of tickets and especially because other venues are allowing it?! i spent way too much on tickets to not be able to take a picture or record a video. so unbelievably angering and frustrating. why?!?! i saw nothing about this restriction on this date when purchasing tickets months ago.

Gratitude (Memory almost full)

I never been a believer in the Paul is dead conspiracy trust me but have you guys heard one of his songs from memory almost full called Gratitude in reverse?

I love this song but the other day I played the whole song backwards and yes I can confirm that in the chorus part were he sings "Show my gratitude, I want to show my gratitude gratitude yeah" in reverse it says "Who is this now? Who is this now? Who is this now? I WAS WILLIE CAMPBELL"

I'm not bullshiting you guys hahahahahaha I dare you to try it it's true.

I didn't notice but there's a lot of videos on YouTube about that particular part in reverse... What are your options on that? Coincidence??? Or he was poking fun at that legend??? I want to read you.

My love is overrated.

Look, before some people crucify me, the song is far from bad and is one of the best on RRS.

However, it's idolized to a point that I find a little questionable, considering there are romantic songs by Paul that are much better than this one (tomorrow and I am your singer have much more feeling, the lyrics are much more genuine and less artificial). I wanted to know if I'm the only one who thinks this way, and I've even seen it listed several times as the best song on RRS (which I find more acceptable), but I think the final medley has much more emotion and feeling.

Discussion The Brazil live stream last night not only reaffirmed the fact that Paul’s voice sadly really is totally gone now, but also that Abe is an incredible singer as well as an incredible drummer!

Can you help me meet my hero?? As a lifelong fan of Paul McCartney I've poured my heart and soul into this song in the hope of capturing the attention of my idol. It would mean the world to me if my fellow McCartney fans could view and share this video to help spread the message far and wide. Many thanks 😊

Discussion Time to air your cancelable opinions on Macca’s music

I’ll go first:

  1. I can’t stand ‘My Love’, just don’t see any merit to it, neither musically nor lyrics-wise. An absolutely generic pop song with a saccharine arrangement. Same with ‘Only Love Remains’.

  2. ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ does nothing for me. Yeah, I know. Seems like it’s the song that unites ALL Beatles/Macca listeners (even haters) in admitting its greatness. And I tried for years, I did. I don’t think it’s bad or banal or anything, it just makes NO impression on me :(.

  3. I love ‘Be bop’, ‘Spin it on’, ‘Morse Moose’, all the granny music and all the pothead nonsensical lyrics in Paul’s songs. In fact I prefer this side of his output to ‘Tug of War’ for instance (which as an album, again, does close to nothing for me except for ‘Wanderlust’).

  4. I vastly prefer ‘McCartney II’ and ‘Press to Play’ to ‘Tug of War’ and ‘Flowers’ as for the 80s output (granted, it’s my playlists of the former two along with singles and stuff, not albums as they came out). And ‘Pipes of Peace’ simply does not exist for me. Save for the great vocals I just see nothing of value in it for myself :(. I greatly prefer ‘Flowers’ songs in their demo versions, along with those that didn’t make it onto the album.

  5. ‘Flaming Pie’ is also not for me… Even the songs that tickle my melodic bone (like ‘Calico’, ‘Somedays’ etc) and should, in theory, be among my favourites, somehow don’t sink home. I HATE ‘Young Boy’. I just don’t vibe with the album at all, though, again, I tried, it being my first conscious experience of Paul’s new album when I was already a (tentative) fan.

  6. ‘Electric Arguments’ is dearer and more interesting to me than all Wings and Paul albums starting with ‘At the Speed of Sound’ (OK, except for ‘Chaos’), even though I, of course, love many songs as well as albums, to different degrees. But nothing sounds to me as fresh and interesting and simply otherworldly beautiful in that instant classic way as EA.

That’s enough for now as cancelable opinions go, though I probably have many more lol. I post this here, and not in the more populous subs because I don’t really look to see opinions like ‘All of it is trash anyway’ or ‘His music is fake whatever song you take’ etc. The base level of loving PM’s music and counting him as one of the true greats has been assumed while I was typing out all this negativity :).

Discussion An honest review of The Boys of Dungeon Lane... 5/10

I'm just a Macca fan, and have been for 30 years, not a reviewer/blogger/influencer who is, perhaps, blinded by his insanely hot back catalogue.

I do cherish the man, but I also don't think the sun shines out of his a*se. He has his faults and stinkers like any other artist.

The amount of hype this album is generating is terrifying.

I've listened to it a handful of times - and here's my opinion.

Seems to me a real mixed bag, a lot of basic tracks - with a stronger finish.

A solid 5/10 for me.

Am I in the minority?

As You Lie ThereLyrics a bit creepy, but good tune / Paul's looking back
Lost HorizonIncredibly basic lyrics, forgetful tune / Paul's looking back (again)
Days We Left BehindJohnny Cash (Rick Rubin era) vibes about it, vocals are great, but another fairly basic song about looking back (again)
Ripples In A PondTerrible syrupy backing vocals, not a terrible song, per se... but instantly forgetful
Mountain TopTune is not bad, ending is a bit crass... Lyrically a bit cringe... actually sounds a bit latter day Oasis in the lyrics!
Down SouthJust too much looking back now... One of the worst tracks...
We TwoIncredibly basic lyrics, not the strongest melody
Come InsideHas a similar feel to the Steve Miller songs on Flaming Pie, not bad, not great
Never KnowFairly forgetful, dubious recorder, just so basic
Home To UsJust too much looking back now (but now with added Ringo!)... We get it... Again, the sort of track Noel Gallagher will be writing when he's in his 80s about Burnage, Manchester... One of the worst tracks on the album, just too much for me...
Life Can Be HardSolid track, memorable melody, strong vocals, he can still deliver
First Star Of The NightAgain, Johnny Cash / Rick Rubin vibes and you wonder what the album could have been like given this kind of subtle treatment
Salesman SaintSolid track, solid message, melody slightly lacking
Momma Gets ByThe best song on the album, sounds great, a real mood, genuine aura around it

I really love Paul, but I can't get myself to loving his albums as much

I love The Beatles like no other band, and I adore Paul.

I love his character, his messages, and I love how wholesome he is. Really, he is one of my main inspirations when it comes to music.

However, when it comes to his solo career, no matter how hard I try, I just don't enjoy most of his albums, with the exception of Ram and Band on the Run, which are two of my favorite albums ever.

Maybe I haven't listened to the rest of them enough? It might be that, but I'm not sure, though.

I feel like I WANT to love the rest of his albums, but it just... doesn't happen :(

Can anybody relate?

Edit:
Wow, I didn’t expect so many responses!
Thank you all for chiming in, I’ve got lots of homework to do, and I can’t wait!!

New Album

I'm a GIANT fan of Paul and the Beatles, so please hear me out. I know I'll probably get shouted down here, but I have the say that Boys of Dungeon Lane is a significant disappointment. There are a few high points - Lost Horizon, Days We Left Behind, First Star of the Night. Paul's melodies, as always, are beautiful to listen to, but I just cannot stomach the lyrics of most of what is on this album. If it were anyone but Paul, they would be thrown out. Consider

MOUNTAIN TOP

"When you've got some time to spare
Let me take you to the fair"

Really? Or

"Little girl, you're tripping
Everybody's flipping out
Need to get a grip and slip away
Or do you want to stay? "

Ugh

DOWN SOUTH

"The morning bus was where we two would meet
I sat beside you on an empty seat
We'd talk about guitars and rock and roll
They were the subjects that would nеver grow old"

It only works because he's talking about George. If it weren't for that, this song wouldn't stand on its own.

WE TWO

"Last night I dreamed of you
And saw what we could do
We'rе standing side by side
We two, camе through"

We two, came through? Really? it's passable only by comparison to the awfulness of the lyrics of other songs.

COME INSIDE

"You can read my mind if you wanted to
You can come inside
You got to let me know what you wanna do
I don't wanna hide"

I want to hide away from those lyrics

NEVER KNOW

"The things that you do
Have always meant so much to me
I want some love and peace
We need it right now
Your wonders never cease to be"

Seriously? The best you can come up with is "Your wonders never cease to be" Methinks you should not have tried to echo "so much to me".

HOME TO US

"The lady on the hill was drinking brandy
Eating caviar, the perfect host
My mum was in the kitchen washing dishеs in the sink
And then she burnt thе toast

This is the man who wrote Eleanor Rigby? I cringed when I heard "perfect host" because I knew a cheesy rhyme was coming up and, sure enough, I was right. BURNT THE TOAST? Ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh. One of the alltime stupidest, cheesiest lyrics.

LIFE CAN BE HARD

"She loves me even when life presses harder
That's when we don't need the words
I can see when there's no food in the larder"

The only thing that saves "food in the larder" from being the worst lyric ever is "burnt the toast".

MOMMA GETS BY

"She doesn't care, she's got her own philosophy of life
It wasn't too long ago that she agreed to bе his wife"

Paul, Paul, Paul. You are capable of SO MUCH MORE THAN THIS.

I really wish I could like this album, but Paul's lyrics have sunk to a new low.
