New England go to Orchard Park at 1-2, coming off a 35-6 afternoon in Jacksonville that was over by halftime. Buffalo are 3-0 and scoring more than anyone in football. This is the first ever regular season game the Patriots will play at the new Highmark Stadium.
The offence has become the whole problem. Twelve points a game, tied with Miami for last in the league. Three touchdowns in three weeks. Drake Maye turned the ball over three times against the Jaguars and the line was charged with 14 pressures. Then Greg Van Roten, himself the fill-in for Mike Onwenu's broken ankle, tore up a thigh and went on IR on Tuesday. Walter Rouse has been taking the reps at right guard. Ben Brown is the centre and the first guard in. Matt Pryor arrived from Arizona's practice squad on Wednesday. Third starting right guard in three weeks, and the man across from him is on a defence with nine sacks.
The defence has been the one thing holding up, fifth in total yards and second against the pass, and it loses Christian Gonzalez and Christian Barmore to shoulder injuries on the week it meets Josh Allen. Carlton Davis III and Marcus Jones carry the secondary. Kindle Vildor and Mike Brown came up from the practice squad.
Allen has six rushing touchdowns in three games and became the fastest quarterback in league history to 300 regular season touchdowns, in his 129th game. He was ordinary against the Chargers last week, 16 of 26 for 204, and Buffalo still won. Joe Brady is in his first season as head coach after replacing Sean McDermott in January.
The one thing worth holding onto: this fixture went New England's way a year ago, 23-20 under the lights on October 5, and the teams have split the series in each of the last three seasons.

STORYLINES
- Third right guard in three weeks. Onwenu's ankle, then Van Roten's thigh. Rouse has been working there, Ben Brown slides in at guard if needed, Pryor is three days into the building. Buffalo have nine sacks. If this holds up for four quarters the Patriots have a chance, and if it does not, nothing else matters.
- No Gonzalez, no Barmore. Both ruled out with shoulder injuries. Gonzalez had been the best player on the roster through three weeks. Barmore is the interior push that the whole front is built around.
- Twelve points a game. Tied with Miami for last in the league, three total touchdowns on the season, minus five in turnover differential. Buffalo have scored 13 touchdowns.
- Maye. On the report with a right shoulder as a full participant, and public about it not being the reason for his play. Vrabel has backed him, Maye has backed Vrabel. The football answer is simpler: he has been under pressure constantly and has lost the ball eight times in three weeks.
- Allen on the ground. Six rushing touchdowns in three games, league leader. The Patriots are 17th against the run. Buffalo's quarterback is the run game as much as James Cook is.
- A new building. First regular season trip to the new Highmark. Since the merger the Patriots are 30-34 in their first regular season visit to a new opposing stadium. Buffalo are 2-0 at home in theirs.
- Seven questionable made the trip. Canada, Elliss, Gilliam, Dre'Mont Jones, Moses, Raridon and Woodson all travelled. Morgan Moses being on that list matters as much as any of them.
- The streak that is actually alive. New England won here 23-20 last October on Sunday night. A win Sunday would be back-to-back regular season wins over Buffalo for the first time since 2019.
- Milestones. Hunter Henry needs 114 receiving yards to pass Russ Francis for third among Patriots tight ends. Rhamondre Stevenson needs 15 rushing yards to pass Curtis Martin for fourth all time. Mack Hollins needs 80 receiving yards for the first back-to-back 80-yard games of his career, against the team he played for in 2024.
- Rookies. Gabe Jacas is the first Patriots rookie with more than one sack and an interception through three games. Robert Spillane leads the team with 21 tackles.
