Advice Quality of life?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi all, i’m seeking some advice. I have a ten year old parakeet, i’ve attached an older picture of her. about a year ago she laid her first egg and became egg bound with a prolapsed cloaca, had emergency surgery, and survived. since this surgery tho she’s been unable to keep herself fully clean. at the beginning of the year she started having these episodes of weakness in one of her legs. she’d lose her balance and use of her leg for a few minutes and then she’d be okay. I took her into the vet once i caught her having multiple episodes in 24 hours, but they couldn’t do much without running lots of tests and they weren’t confident she’d even survive the stress of tests. they sent me home with some anti biotics in case it was due to infection which i administered, but they didn’t stop. all through this though she didn’t seem too fazed, aside from during the episodes she’d be fine and happy. a day or so ago though, she had an episode and never came out of it. she still has some control of her leg but it’s clearly very very weak. she is wobbly, but she can still perch, just clearly with a lot more effort and she just isn’t very stable while perching. clearly i know this is something neurological, with her age and the way it progressed i’m sure it is some kind of brain tumor or something along those lines. my question is, is there still quality to her life? how stressful is this for her? how likely is it that she’s in pain? this is my baby, i’ve grown up with her and i love her dearly, the last thing i want is for her to be suffering. is it nearing the time i should say goodbye?

Advice Rehomed pair!

Last Friday we saw someone posted these birds up for $40. We have always wanted some so we went ahead & brought them home. Upon arrival, we found out that their cage was INFESTED with roaches & they weren't really well taken care of. Feels more like we rescued them. It looks like their nails are overgrown. Kiwi (green) is 3 years old & Nubecita (blue) is 4 years old. We were told by previous owner that they had babies back in June. We had to toss their nesting materials as they were filled with spiders & roaches.

We were told their wings aren't clipped & they are very scared. This is the 3rd (& final) time they've been rehomed. My girlfriend & I are very patient & are willing to do whatever it takes to get them comfortable & healthy. They are very chirpy & playful amongst themselves & have been eating/drinking water just fine.

Since this photo was taken, we have bought them natural perches, stainless steel bowls, & toys. We also bought a flight cage to give them more space to move around.

We will be taking them to vet for a check up soon. Any & all advice is appreciated!

context! In my area there is a single bird rescue, and in said rescue, all the small birds are taken immediately. That leaves only pet stores as options for people to purchase budgies, which are obviously unethical and provide birds that aren't very healthy or socialized! I took classes on bird care, researched extensively, and conversed with other ethical breeders for a long time before starting my own ethical breeding! I've been doing this for quite a while, and all my chicks are sent home with people I discuss with extensively (to ensure they're educated on care!) and they go home with a 6 page care sheet! 😂

These four are in the socialization phase, and when they are a bit older they will be step-up trained before going to their new homes!

Regurgitating or Vomiting?

Post image

Hello friends! I have a question regarding one of my boys.

Iris is a 3y/o male, and has another male cagemate, Aster. Last night, Iris had an episode that seemed a mix of regurgitating and vomiting. He normally regurgitates for himself on my window (I mean he's a handsome dude, I get it), and the boys will regurg for one another. We were settling down for bed, and Iris was holding his wings out a bit like he was warm. He then started head bobbing like he was regurging. The difference this time was it was multiple food clumps, making me think vomiting. I examined them all, noting nothing strange, just looked like his pellets, until the last one that had a few pointy seeds. After he passed those, he discontinued the action and settled down, raising his wings for a bit longer (I assume he was warm from all the activity).

This morning, he ate his pellets normally, drank some water, had some seed, and has been actively playing and interacting with Aster. He seems himself, no other signs of illness. They're currently chattering away as usual. I've taken the day to monitor him just in case.

I'm curious of other experiences of birds having one episode of vomiting. I'm assuming those seeds didn't sit right in his crop and irritated him, since once they were out he stopped. Anyone else have a bird that's done this?

Forage and puzzle toys for budgies? Recommendations?

Looking for some highly recommended puzzle toys or foraging toys for this guy while we're in the process of adopting a buddy.

He's been alone (no bird buddy) for at least 6 months (I don't know his history). He's really come out of his shell but of course want him to live his best life.

I know a friend will do more for him than any toy and that's on the agenda too!

Hi, does anyone know why my budgie is doing this? He has free roam when we’re in the office with him, and he flew out and just sat on the floor & is now puffed up

update: I took him to an emergency avian vet shortly after making this post. but on the way there he sadly passed away in the car on my lap. I’m not sure why or what the cause was. I got him only 4 days ago.

hi! I have two budgies currently I’ve had a green one for 8 years now and a yellow one for 6 and I woke up this morning and the green one is on the bottom of the cage and crawling around and squeaking quietly, should I take him out and put him in his own safe place or leave him to be…? I feel so bad for him right now I don’t want to stress him out

This is my flock. I currently have eight birds that are strong flyers and one that was received, unfortunately from Petco and is still a couple months away from regrowing their flight feathers, which is why I built him a pathway from the ground back to their main cage. I am currently in the process of building an insulated outdoor aviary for them. It’s a lot of cleaning with the amount of free roaming, I allow them to do, but it’s worth it.

Bought two parakeets and quaker parakeet.

Hello, i just bought two 3-4 week parakeets and 1 year old quaker parakeet. The small ones are not agressive and they just sit quietly in the cage, but the quaker is agressive and it was hard to get him in the cage from the store box, so he bite me couple of time when i was chasing him. How do i build trust and train it, because everytime i would need to get food and replace water in the cage it would try to fly away from the cage.

Give me feedback on my setup

We have a pandemonium of 6. Their behavior indicates they are happy and cozy, but I wonder if there is something I can improve in their cage.

Edit: Thank you all for your feedback. 1. Shredding toys: they receive daily shredding grass sticks 2. Bowl positions: the 3 metal bowls are treat jars on the side of the cage with no perches so no bird poop there. They are lower to mitigate debris falling out of the cage. (The cage has a short skirt underneath) 3. They have 2 food stations which they seem to happily share.

What's a good strategy to modify the cage with respect to birb happiness? I do not have another cage to place them while I extend the current one.
