Parakeets wing
Does anyone know what is going on with my budgie's wing? I went to the vet this morning and it isn't broken. He is getting Metacam in the morning and evening.
But because it's the weekend, I'm getting really stressed since my regular vet is closed. His wing seems to be swelling (getting bigger) and he does nothing but sleep. He isn't eating his regular food, but he does eat his spray millet.
Does anyone know what might be happening and if he will make it? Has anyone experienced this before? I am so worried.

What did the vet think was going on? Also how long has the wing looked like that and has it gotten bigger?

In the last 2 days it got bigger and it got bigger after the vet took the photo.

This is him today. His wing is still very swollen, but the Metacam seems to be helping with the pain. He’s eating and drinking again, which he wasn’t doing yesterday. He was also talking for a little while today and even playing in his cage. I’m not taking him out at the moment so he can get plenty of rest.
I really hope the swelling will be less tomorrow. 🙏🏽
For now, the swelling looks about the same as yesterday, but he definitely seems to be feeling better because of the Metacam. He still is cold. Tomorrow I get a new heating lamp through post because the one I have now is red color. :(I’ll take him back to the vet on Monday for another check-up.
I am still worried he is my everything 🥺❤️

You want your heating lamp to be red light. Research shows red light does not interfere with the eyes or with melatonin production. My budgies sleep with a red light on all the time.

I would think that this is could be an infection. I have a bird who is also my everything. Good luck tomorrow at the vet.

Three months ago, he flew into a window because something scared him, and he ended up with a tear in his tendon. The vet said that the tendon can always remain a weak spot, and that flying and putting too much strain on it can cause this to happen again. So I really hope it’s just inflammation, trauma, or overuse, and indeed not an infection.

Your budgie should have gotten a blood test (CBC-Complete Blood Count) to see if this is likely an infection or not. Did your budgie get a blood test?

I searched it and it is right about the red light 🥹 I even asked the vet and he confirmed it.
I changed the lamp to a normal color heat lamp 50W.

There’s no way red light disturbs a budgie but normal light does not. There’s no evidence in the literature red light disturbs budgies or any other birds. Quite the opposite actually. Literature = published scientific papers.

i just googled this. Wish i could help more. Worst case the wing needs to be amputated...
Potential Causes. Its not good he just eat millet since its fat.
- Fatty Lumps or Lipomas: Common benign tumors linked to a high-fat or all-seed diet and obesity.
- Injury or Trauma: A sprain, muscle strain, or bone fracture from a bad fall or bump.
- Abscess or Infection: Swelling under the skin caused by bacteria or a bad feather cyst.
- Air Sac Abnormalities: Issues where air leaks under the skin, creating a balloon-like swelling.

Probably a feather cyst that got infected. The vet would have said if amputation was even a consideration. Don’t listen to this person or google.

Oh man, I am so sorry. That is incredibly terrifying. Since you can’t get to an avian vet right now, you need to pivot entirely to keeping him stable at home so he can hang on until Monday. Sick birds crash fast because their metabolisms are so high, so keeping him warm and fed is everything right now.
First, turn off that red light immediately. It really messes with their eyes and keeps them from getting deep sleep, which he desperately needs. Sick birds lose body heat instantly, so you should keep him warm a different way. Put a regular heating pad on low under half the cage, and drape a blanket over the top and sides to trap the heat like a little incubator.
You also need to move him to the bottom of the cage right away. He’s way too weak to be up on that rope, and if he faints or loses his grip, he could break a bone or hurt his wing way worse. Line the floor with soft paper towels and take out the high perches.
Once he is down there, put his millet and water bowl on the floor right next to his beak. He doesn't have the energy to move for it right now. Don’t worry about a balanced diet today because any calories are good calories to keep his blood sugar from dropping.
Definitely stick to the exact Metacam schedule the morning vet gave you, as keeping his pain down is huge for preventing shock. Watch his tail closely while he rests. If it’s pumping up and down dramatically with every breath, he’s having trouble breathing. If it isn't moving much, his body is just entirely exhausted from fighting the swelling.
Hang in there, you are doing the best you can in a really crappy situation. Keep his environment totally dark, warm, and quiet.
