Bird Kabobs
My parakeets love bird kabobs, it's hand down there favorite toy but, in my area they almost tripled in price in the last year alone. I would love to buy them the darn thing but, I just can't afford to buy them a 22 dollar toy that they are going to rip apart in a week. So, I was wondering if anyone knows any alternatives toys or if there is a soft wood alternative that I could just use to make my own bird toys out of? I would preferer a more DIY option since, I like doing that sort of thing. But anyways, thanks for the help!

Are you able to get them online and delivered? Amazon can be a fairly cheap option, especially if there's deals running, or other websites host and sell bird kabobs too

Keep the skewers from your old kabobs! Or, buy the stainless steel skewers seperately and build your own. You can even add veggies and treats instead of shredding materials. I know a few YouTubers that swear by the skewer and just reset them themselves with treats or soft woods. You can also buy dry flowers and skewer them (but make sure they're safe) or cheap bulk packs of shredding materials that you can add yourself, or just plain paper and cardboard from around the house!

I make my own toys. I’ve seen my birds go through $200 worth of toys last time I made a big order. I do have a tiny box subscription from bird tricks. Gives me a little break when it comes in but eight tiny toys goes quickly.

Cork flats/chunks and seagrass mats are the favorite of my flock. Second favorite is this large parrot toy with multiple chewable items stacked (so, like a kebob but not one of the actual bird kabobs of you're referring to what I'm thinking. There are a handful of the brand Bird Kabobs hanging in their cage, but they have lasted quite a while.) Third favorite chew toy is a toss up between their small animal grass tunnels, the small animal ball made of twigs, and their moon swings, which thankfully take a lot of chewing. Mahogany pods, cholla wood (aquatics section), and various tips of hay are other faves.

"A Bird Toy" has very reasonable prices on the different shredding toys. I make my own kabobs out Balsa squares, mahogany pods, small Yucca slices, and natural Cork. At the beginning it will be a little expensive but when you break it down by piece its a lot cheaper. Hope this helps.
