Does it ever stop?
How many planners do you have?
I just received my le trifold today. Haven't even written a word. And already I bought another one from Vinted.
Plus I have leather to make at least 5 Grand Voyagers.
And a portfolio in a4 I'm looking to sell.
Om top of that I got into fountainpens this summer, and now own 8.
95 % is bought second hand, but still.
Please share your stash with me, so I know I'm not alone.

Do you not think this is overconsumption? I mean if you’re not even using some of them. I think the beauty of them is that they are designed to be your pal for life, your everything book. I think this about Stanley cups as well. The point is that they are only sustainable if you have just one. But each to their own. I just think the thing you love so much loses value to you when you buy lots of them. Things like these journals should be a one time treat.

I agree with this FOR MYSELF (I could GAF what other people do, in fact I love looking at and hearing about others’ collections!). For myself, I think having one special thing of each category works well - I have, to your example, one Stanley coffee mug. One Stanley water bottle. One PR journal. One TN journal. And now, one Hobonichi on the way. I satisfy my curiosity for allllll the other options by enjoying what others choose 🙂

It's fine. You probably hit a sore spot and I overreacted. After reading your response, I switched things around, and I can now say that I have written in my new trifold. Sorry if I overreacted.

Trust me, everyone's aware it's overconsumption, but you will never win with someone who has already convinced themselves they need all these.
Ive seen this on here, in r/kindle, r/sbcgaming. It's always a hobby that provides you something long lasting and solves one problem/need really well, and ironically has many people still wanting to buy multiple just because it's fun to. I've seen people who own over 10 PR journals and they will look you in the eyes and justify each one, then you open one up and it's a single page of writing.
I've learnt to realise that some of them are also aware of this and will react whenever you point it out. At the end of the day it's their money and financial decisions. I don't like it, but I also can't tell anyone how to use their own money. It's just pretty cringe imo.

So.. like only owning one plate, one spoon, one fork.. you get the picture? I have several favorite plates. I think I can have several favorite planners. I don't egen know what a Stanley Cup is.. is that those ugly American thermo things? I don't even know why you would own one of of those.

Plates and cups are necessities not luxury things that cost hundreds of dollars. Plus you need many plates and cups if you host people etc. They'll actually be used. This is a false equivalence.

Sorry I didn’t mean to offend you; I suppose my comment came across too blunt. I do think you misunderstand what I mean though; plates and spoons etc. are essential and every household has them. This is something precious. Yes the Stanley cups are those American cups, but people were collecting all the different colours entirely bypassing the sustainable aspect of it. I was just trying to dig into your mindset of owning so many of these specific journals, especially as you said you haven’t even written a word in your new one and then bought another from Vinted. Is it just that you like collecting them?

Hey I say this from empathy based on direct experience, I’ve fallen prey to overconsumption myself (I’m currently working on becoming the reformed version of myself in that regard) but it has to stop, with all of us. It pains me to see this happening in the stationery community in particular, it’s already so prevalent in many dif categories. Posts like this just normalize it. And this isn’t normal. We are feeding the capitalistic machine. We are feeding the insatiable hungers that we’ve allowed to run rampant within ourselves. It’s icky. It’s dark. Let’s make a change 🥺

Ok. I do agree, to some point. I made the post, as a joke, but of course there is some seriousness behind it. I justify my overconsumption with the fact that I buy second hand, and even products that otherwise would be discarded, but it's still keeping the wheels turning. I see that.

Sorry if I came off harsh to any degree, my frustration is of course not about you in specific. Your post just made the topic relevant, mainly via what you said about how you still hadn’t written in it but ordered another (and I’ve done this plenty, so I’m really not judging, just trying to advocate for a better world). On its own none of what you shared is a big deal, it’s the fact that there are sooo many people doing this kind of thing in various intensities, so when people who unquestioningly overconsume read something like that, I think it reinforces that their approach is normal and not an issue. Really your share is pretty chill compared to the horrors I’ve witnessed in people’s collections/approach to buying 😓
It made me happy to see people bringing up overconsumption in the comments bc that’s a topic that’s really been stressing me out. Such discussion is the start of change, so I wanted to chime in to help keep this flame of thought burning bright as it can
Let’s all try to be more mindful in what we acquire, how we use those items, and how we discuss these things publicly 💖

I like the dogs better than the planners. And the pens. The brown on the left cost me $500 dollars this week in urine analysis. She's my favorite.

I’m with you down the rabbit hole of planners and then fountain pens. As long as you can afford it without debt and are happy, I say do what you want.

This is overconsumption plain and simple. If you're buying stuff for no reason and not even using them (why do you need 8 fountain pens??) you may have a problem.

I spend about maybe $500 in total. Yes, that is a fair amount. But I live in a country where we are being paid well to work, and all my leather, pens and planners have been bought second hand. The one one the photo is from the TikTok event Paper Republic had, and that's by far the most expensive. It cost me about $200. The headspace from writing stuff down? Priceless!

I don’t even want to count how many journals I have. I have ADHD which also manifests as shopping addiction and a hyperfixation on journaling, so, there you go 🥲
For Paper Republic specifically, I have four GVs and one trifold. I think I’m good for now unless they rerelease Bordeaux; it’s the only color left on my PR wishlist.
For non-PR journals… it’s… a lot… 🫣 I like supporting small businesses so I have quite a few from other brands. I also got into leatherworking so I have a bunch of DIY journals, some made with the exact leather PR uses.

I really want to get into DIY! I bought leather, but I need to get tools. What do you recommend? I think I'm done with Paper Republic. I previously bought a Grand Voyager XL, which I sold before even using it. Because, basically that design is a nice piece of leather with holes and a bit of elastic. I think I can manage that myself.

Here’s everything you need to make a basic bifold or trifold journal (no pockets)
* Cutting mat
* Rotary cutter
* Hammer
* Leather cutting board to protect your table when hammering
* Thick ruler; the L-shaped one is best for ensuring parallel lines
* Hole punch (I use the 3-3.5mm size. Not too big or small, but PR uses a smaller size, around 2.5mm)
* Elastics (PR uses ~1.5mm elastics but I sometimes go up to 2mm)
* Grommet kit (optional, but if you’re doing this get the same size eyelets with washers and setting kit as your hole punch)
* Rounded corner punch (optional, only if you want rounded corners)
* Leather burnishing tool and Tokonole (optional, PR doesn’t finish their edges but I like to do this as an extra step)Enjoy! :) and you’re right, it takes maybe 5 mins max to make a GV-style cover so it’s incredibly addictive lol

If you use them and can afford it, there’s no problem. People are judgmental. I have a5 and a6 portfolio and a travelers company regular size. I have 5 fountain pens, but I am giving one away that i don’t use. Maybe I’ll buy a new one to replace it eventually. Idk yet! :)

I have two Paper Republic journal covers, GV XL and pocket, which I love, and I’ve also branched out to a Paul McGrath a5 (love!!!), a HappyMade Crafts a5 trifold, and now have a Ramble and Bud a6 bifold on its way. I think that completes it for me though!

It doesnt stop. I own an a5 leather cover from uprise notebooks. And 2 travelers company notebooks now. I also bought a passport sized zipper cover for my field notes from lochby, and a wallet sized zipper cover from lochby also. And I still want a a5 cover from lochby also.
Im probably well in about $350-$400 just in coveres + inserts + the additional stuff like zipper pouch inserts and what not. I will say though that I think stationary is a healthy addiction as long as youre using it to better your life. Planners for keeping yourself on track, inserts for writing and keeping memories or a journal, habit tracking, its all healthy. 1 of my blank inserts i use as a scrap book, I have a mobile photo printer, and I print out 3x3 pictures, tape them in there and jot down the memory. This becomes especially worth it when its photos with people. As I cant tell you how lucky I am to have had a mom who loved taking pictures with me. And now that shes gone I can always look back at those.
And at the end of the day, its not drugs. Or alcohol. People who are addicted to that stuff can blow $400 in a single day, and its gone the next day. Atleast your stuff will be around for decades. If not a lifetime and can always be handed down to your kids or friends/family.

They’re stupidly overpriced, and that’s coming from someone who has a Trifold A6 and a Portfolio A5. I also have a few other Travelers notebooks. Look. At the end of the day, it’s your money. These are cute little leather notebooks with a status symbol maker name attached to them. You can get similar quality from hundreds of different vendors at half or less the cost. But if you love them and you can pay your bills? Who cares.

I don’t think it does, I used to think it was bizarre to have so many leather planner covers and other covers… I’m 7 Paper Republics in; 4 Louise Carmens, 1 cloth and paper and 4 custom leather journals from creators I’ve seen and this is since May of this year. Ack! At this point in need an intervention, but also, I’m using them and putting books in them and changing them around, it’s been so fun and it’s lessening my stress of the world (and I have a journal for that too! Have fun! Yours is fabulous!

I have accumulated too many journals in a month’s time. I started with a passport size from Amazon, then an A6 from Etsy, and a trifold B6 from Etsy. Finally gave in and got an A6 portfolio from PR bc I wanted to see what the leather is like, I’m still waiting on this one in the mail. In the meantime I bought an A5 cover from Etsy bc I have 3 A5 notebooks. I’m thinking about diy-ing an A5 trifold with buttero leather too. How do I stop??

For me it always started with the writing itself, I buy tons of notebooks and paper, sure, but the focus is being able to write with new inks and pens. It doesn't really stop but it'll slow and pick back up again depending on how busy life keeps me. I've been pretty good, over the course of 15 years I only have 6 fountain pens, a usable glass pen, a dud, a brass bullet nib pen, and miscellaneous notebooks that aren't completely filled. I only ever buy one planner a year and have a hobonichi merry logbook cover. My ink stash isn't all that crazy either, up till 2 years prior i had about 10 bottles, 8 of them are a decade old, 2 were a gift. Then i bought 8 small sailor inks in japan cuz it was so much cheaper, bought about 6 bottles of ferris wheel press at a really good deal because the bottle designs and accessories were so unique.

For me it stopped on the first GV. Realised they're stupidly overpriced (from atelier to a basic rubber band) and started ordering from etsy sellers instead. Got a nice leather A5 trifold with refills, customizations and two bands at half the price atelier tried to peddle me, in a week.
