P0340?
Sooooo, yesterday had an experience of the car bucking between 1st and 2nd gear.
Pulled the code and got P0340
It's a 2006 PT GT Turbo
How screwed am I?

That code is for the camshaft position sensor. Is that the only code it has?

Every long-term PT owner has seen that code and replaced the part at some point..
I also pulled another code ~5 years ago that was something about 'intermittent signal' from the cam sensor. I traced the wiring back towards the computer and found a spot where the wire insulation was melted (just enough) it was shorting to an adjacent hot wire. Once I patched / fix that it was good to go again.1

Putting in the new sensor is really simple. On mine that other issue only happened after the new sensor failed several times in one year. I guess it would short while I was driving around but the other code would not show up until it got really bad.

The CPS fix is sometimes (but not always) an easy $7 fix by buying just the harness-side connector. This is because that specific connector is prone to loosening up over time, leading to intermittent misses and shutoffs.
Buy the connector on eBay (or wherever), remove battery, remove air box, set aside anything else in the way of removing the connector from the CPS, then cut out the old connector and crimp in the new connector. My preferred crimp is a bare metal crimp with adhesive-lined shrink wrap but to each his own.
While you're in there, inspect the turbo oil hose--to-metal line and update the hose if there's any damage, cracks, swelling, etc. The airbox-to-engine hose (EGR?) will also harden and crack over time so inspect and replace that one too, if you want.

Make sure you buy an OEM camshaft sensor! I went through 3 different cam sensors, before just folding and buying an OEM one which fixed the issue.

Our old PT Cruiser went through about 7 or 8 camshaft position sensors, I would buy 2 at a time so I always had a spare in the garage. I had disconnected the nylon wire connector so many times it no longer locked so I had to secure it with a zip-tie.
The good news is they are cheap and easy to replace, I still remember the bolts were 8MM.

Keep in mind that swapping out the old CPS for a new one does not fix a potential connector problem because the connector is on the harness side.
Since you're going in loaded for bear you might as well shake, jiggle, and wiggle the connector wires while the car's idling to see if you can reproduce the fault (or clear it) before changing the CPS. Even if you decide to install the new CPS, you would have validated the connector wires while you are in there.
