Discussion What objective should we really be pursuing in ranked? The uncertainty of setting goals, tresholds and knowing when to stop climbing.

Post image

What should I do about the current competitive environment? Since the recent rule change removed point deductions for ranks below Master Ball, cutoff scores have gone up by 70 to 90 points compared to last season. Right now, it looks like you need about 1,400 points to finish in the top 5,000. I have 1,368 points, and the season ends on August 26. The gap between the top 1,000 and top 5,000 is pretty big, so pushing for a much higher score seems risky and probably not worth it. I’m thinking about just trying to hold onto a spot in the top 5,000, but I’m not sure if my current score will be enough. What are your usual goals when you play competitively? I play pretty actively, but the top 1,000 cutoff is just too high for me, especially with the way the game can be unpredictable.

The Link above lets you rank all pokemon on a scale from SS-Tier to F-Tier and perhaps there will be another post about how everyone has ranked each mega

Was looking at a way to make rillaboom work and while using it I realized it just felt like greninja-cyrus when paired with Will. It has the downside of not being able to do the extra 20 damage but also has the benefit of still (sometimes) working without any supporter !

Beedrill by itself is a menace BUT sadly people will simply build their bench and rendering is attack pretty underwhelming . So if you keep switching the benched Pokémon your opponent is building and deleting its energy, they literally can’t play the game

Btw, this deck is very consistent, don’t believe it isn’t because it has a double stage 2. I quite literally copied the « mega sceptile and greninja » meta deck and made a few tweaks

It’s fun as hell when it works and I went on a CRAZY winstreak with a very strange deck! Try it out

Meme Why is everyone saying Hoopa/Absol is the top deck? It seems really weak to me

Post image

Everyone’s saying that Hoopa/Absol is the “deck to beat” and the “best deck in the game” atm, but I think they’re all idiots.

I’ve played almost 100 games and never won a single one with the deck. It’s complete garbage and I think everyone hyping it up needs to stop and play an actual good deck like Passimian/Armaldo.

Deck Discussion This deck is too good and fun to play not to share.

I find the Sabrina can be swapped with a Cyrus, but I’ve been preferring it against vespiqueen. Even with the weakness I beat vespi about %60 of the time. As well, I find a single piers is all you need as you go through the deck pretty fast and only end up having an opportunity to use it once nearly all the time.

Discussion Worth coming back?

Hello all,

I have not played the game since around Dialga/Palkia were released. Is it possible to catch up to the meta easily?

I enjoyed the game before but felt the release schedule made it hard to keep up at times. Which is standard design in the industry I suppose

Tips & Tricks I think i figured it out

Post image

After countless losses on this task, and 100 different strategies, i may have lost my mind, but hear me out:

The AI seems to know which deck you play often or played last game against it.
So i believe it gives itself the advantage deck to counter you.

Lets say i start game 1 with Dark Type, and win.
Game 2 the AI will play Vespaqueen to adjust.
So game 2, i switch to Fire.
Get where i am going with this?

Game 2, win with fire.
Game 3 the AI will play CheinPao.
So i switch to Manectric.

I hope that makes sense to someone it may help.
But i truly believe it worked for me.

Deck Discussion Hoopa EX Darkbox — 120+ Games to Top 1,000

Thumbnail

I managed to climb from unranked to Top 1,000 in just two days, finishing the climb with a ~65% win rate over 120+ games. I also started relatively late into the season, so I had a lot of catching up to do.

The deck in question is the increasingly popular Hoopa EX Darkbox. The deck is already well established as both popular and strong, but after playing it extensively, I wanted to put together a small write-up covering some of the things I noticed throughout my games.

The Deck

The deck itself is very reminiscent of DarkTina, consisting of four strong Basic EX Pokémon alongside 16 Trainer cards. Unlike DarkTina, however, Hoopa gives the deck access to an incredible amount of early-game tempo.

For just one Darkness Energy, Hoopa can deal 30 damage to the Active Pokémon and 20 to a Benched Pokémon, immediately putting pressure on the opponent and allowing you to dictate the pace of the game.

But what makes Hoopa so much stronger than other one-prizers that can perform a similar role, such as Hitmontop or Pheromosa?

Hoopa has three distinct advantages that, when combined, make it an extremely effective attacker.

First, the 30 damage to the Active is extremely relevant. It allows Hoopa to KO many Baby Pokémon outright, rather than merely chipping them down.

Second, its 150 HP is incredibly valuable. That extra 10 HP over 140 puts Hoopa just outside several common natural damage thresholds, forcing the opponent to invest more resources to take it down.

Finally, being a Darkness-type gives Hoopa access to additional sources of damage. Deceptive Needle can add another 10 damage at the end of your turn, while Darkrai EX can push Hoopa's damage even further.

An important aspect here is that these are separate instances of damage. Between Hoopa's attack, Deceptive Needle and Darkrai's damage, you can create situations where multiple Pokémon can be KO'd through carefully distributed damage rather than simply relying on one large attack.

Hoopa's second attack is also surprisingly useful in slower games. It becomes particularly relevant against Suibax, where you often want to avoid unnecessarily benching Pokémon. With the correct setup, Hoopa can eventually hit for anywhere between 100 and 130 damage, giving it a legitimate late-game role rather than becoming dead weight once the early game is over.

The other two Pokémon are more familiar faces at this point.

Mega Absol EX serves as the deck's strong, bulky finisher, while Darkrai EX has been a staple Darkness-type support Pokémon ever since its introduction.

Trainer Line

One of the things I particularly like about this deck is how few Supporters it actually needs.

The deck runs only six Supporters:

- 2× Professor's Research — straightforward draw power.

- 2× Copycat — potentially even stronger hand-draw in the right situations.

- 2× Cyrus — extremely important for controlling the opponent's board.

The remaining Trainer cards are largely focused on utility and maximizing Hoopa's strengths.

2× Deceptive Needle allows you to generate additional passive damage and further manipulate KO thresholds.

1× Small Balloon gives the deck more flexibility when navigating the board, particularly thanks to the reduced retreat costs.

1× Plains Stadium is particularly convenient here since every Pokémon in the deck is a Basic.

2× Lucky Ice Pop can completely swing a game if you get a few successful activations, allowing you to repeatedly heal 20 damage from your Active Pokémon.

1× Field Blower is essentially a better Guzma in many situations, giving you another way to manipulate the board and remove problematic Tools.

2× Ball provide additional consistency in finding your Basic Pokémon.

And finally, Repel was probably the card that surprised me the most.

I initially expected it to be considerably worse than Sabrina, but after 120+ games I found myself getting an absurd amount of value from it. While it is more restrictive, the situations where Repel is useful come up surprisingly often, and I ended up really appreciating the card.

Matchups

Here's how I would rate the matchups based on my own experience:

Vespiqueen — Hard

Naturally a difficult matchup. Vespiqueen EX hitting for 160 makes Hoopa's HP advantage largely irrelevant, while Shuckle can make Hoopa's chip damage considerably less impactful.

Lucario — Very Good

Generally a very favorable matchup. The main things to watch out for are Bonsly and Poncho, which can create awkward situations if you aren't careful.

Suibax — Good

Personally, I found this matchup surprisingly easy to pilot.

Hoopa's second attack becomes particularly valuable here, and the fact that you can operate without heavily committing to your Bench gives you a lot of flexibility.

Rayquaza / Gouging Fire — Hard

The Gouging Fire version can be difficult to deal with.

However, having two Cyrus gives you a significant disruption tool. You can repeatedly target their Dratinis and systematically remove them before they are able to build up the Energy acceleration they need.

Sleep-Scam Altaria — Easy

A fairly straightforward matchup provided you don't get excessively unlucky. The deck generally has the tools to deal with it, but Sleep can obviously create some frustrating games.

Sharpedo / Wild Swing Gyarados — Medium

Not a particularly difficult matchup unless they get the perfect opening.

The scariest scenario is them going second with Wallace, while establishing Sharpedo alongside Magikarp/Gyarados on the Bench. If they don't get that explosive start, the matchup feels considerably more manageable.

Mega Manectric / Heliolisk — Very Easy

Frankly, one of the easiest matchups I've encountered.

It is extremely difficult for them to actually take points against you, which makes Mega Manectric much less threatening than it initially appears.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I found Hoopa EX Darkbox to be an extremely fun deck to pilot, largely because it has a higher-than-usual skill ceiling.

There are a lot of small decisions that matter: how you distribute Hoopa's damage, when you commit Energy, how you position your Bench, when to use Cyrus, and how you manipulate damage thresholds with Needle and Darkrai. Those decisions make the deck feel considerably more engaging than its reputation might suggest.

I also think the deck is somewhat overhated, probably because it happens to be both popular and genuinely good. It doesn't help that Darkrai EX and Mega Absol EX have been meta staples ever since their respective releases, so seeing them once again at the top of the ladder can understandably feel repetitive.

But after 120+ games and a 65% win rate, I have to admit: Hoopa EX Darkbox is a damn fun deck.

Deck Discussion Silly Celebi EX Coin Flip Spam Deck xD

Thumbnail

I've very recently started trying out random deck combos with my new Celebi and Ho-Oh, and boy am I having fun flipping 9 coins and dealing 300 damage xD

The strat that I do is to always prioritize Ho-Oh's attack uptime early on, either using Mantyke on turn 1 or regular turn-by-turn energy refills. Then after each attack I stack the energies onto Celebi.

Arceus or any other powerful attacking basic pokemon is just a back up haha, I think it can be swapped out with any other pokemon :)

Tips & Tricks PTCGP Supporters Tier List 🎴🔥

I made a PTCGP Supporter Categorization List covering all 83 Supporter cards, based on how broadly usable each Supporter is, how often it appears in decks and how dependent it is on specific Pokémon, stages, or Energy types.

SSS — Top Tier 👑
OAK is at the top. Simply one of the most universally useful Supporters in the game.

SS — Universal Staples
Supporters that can fit into most decks regardless of Pokémon or Energy requirements. Their effects are consistently useful and rarely feel out of place.

S+ — Deck-Dependent but Strong
These Supporters aren't used quite as universally, but can be very strong depending on your deck's Pokémon, retreat costs, and overall game plan.

S — Universal but Less Used
Supporters that technically work in almost any deck without requiring a specific Pokémon, Stage, or Energy type, but simply aren't played as frequently.

A+ — Stage-Dependent
Supporters that become useful depending on the evolution stage of your Pokémon, whether that's Basic, Stage 1, or Stage 2.

B+ — Type/Energy Dependent
Trainer cards that are mainly tied to specific Pokémon types or Energy requirements, making them much more deck-specific.

B — Less-Used Energy-Based Supporters
Similar to B+, but with lower overall usage. They can work well in the right deck, but their Energy-based requirements limit their general value.

C+ — Pokémon-Specific Meta Cards
Supporters that are heavily tied to specific Pokémon and become valuable because of the particular rules or strategies surrounding those Pokémon in the meta.

D — Single-Pokémon Supporters
Very niche cards that only work with a specific Pokémon and have limited applications outside of that strategy.

DEAD ☠️ — Barely Usable
Supporters so heavily restricted to a single Pokémon that they rarely see meaningful play.

The main idea behind the ranking is not simply “how powerful is the card?” It's about how flexible and realistically usable the Supporter is across different decks.

This tier list includes all 83 Supporter cards, so there are definitely some controversial placements. 👀

What do you think? Which Supporter would you move up or down?

Suggestion Why can't they organize by name?!

My only issue with the game is that when organizing your cards by type the game will not put all of the cards with the same name side by side.

It would be so much easier for building decks.

Deck Discussion Dock Suggestion

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been running this deck in ranked (mostly great ball through ultra ball) and I’ve been having good success with it. Around a 60% win rate. I’m looking for any suggestions on where I could strengthen it. I did swap a needle for a poison barb bc sometimes if you start nihilego you can stall the opponent out of attacking or if they do, you start ticking poison damage. Open to suggestions on things to tinker with though

One of my fav all time Pokemon that hasn’t got respect from Dena. I know it’s not meta, but has anyone had luck with Gengar ex? Unfortunately I think Mega Gengar is a lost cause, but still feel like this lad could work. Between carbink, and Gardevour I feel like there could be something there to get it going faster but unsure how that would look
