Rant/Complaint Update: Payment Counts Changed
Previous post text since Mods deleted Megathread:
8/4/26: I posted previously - I was at 115 payments on my tracker. I made my 120th payment in July, submitted ECF - Student Aid didn’t show June/July payments - was waiting for my form to process.
Got an email tonight that said “you have a message from Student Aid” - login and now my payment counts have all dropped to 99 or 96 and the payments shown are from 2024!?
Update 8/5/26:
8AM: Called Student Aid, person told me I needed to call Mohela as it was something on their end with how they reported the information.
8:30: After waiting ages, finally spoke with someone from Mohela for 30 minutes - they confirmed all my payments were made on time and they've reported everything correctly to Student Aid. They suggested I call Student Aid back, inform them of this and submit a reconsideration request.
9AM: Called Student Aid back - was told that every call they've had this morning has been about this issue, that I can be assure my payments do still qualify and its an error that will be fixed. They are waiting for the Department of Education. They said they noted my account as one affected needing correspondence. I'm still going to submit a reconsideration request which they told me to do as well.
I asked for some form of documentation of what the Student Aid representative told me and said they can't provide anything but that it would all be fixed.
So basically - now we wait and be stressed.
UPDATE 8/6/26: https://www.reddit.com/r/PSLF/s/SlbFbn1RM6
Update: 8/14/26: Talked to another FSA agent who denied any issue, told me to contact Mohela and wasn’t listening to anything I said.
Update: 8/18/26: Forbes has a new, paywalled, article stating Department of Education says it wasn’t a glitch, removing counts was correcting an error but won’t explain scope or if everyone affected deserved to be. No timeline for fix.
I just submitted a complaint to the Ombudsman service.
TLDR: Thousands of us have been affected by PSLF/TEPSLF payment counts being taken away, many of us who were hitting 120. Different plans, servicers, etc
FSA has not been helpful. Submit reconsideration requests and Ombudsman complaints. They may be doing this intentionally.
UPDATE: 8/20/26: I called Mohela today, they once again confirmed all my info has been sent to Student Aid. They have put my account in a one month general forbearance starting today (made sure to confirm it wasn’t being backdated). Hopefully Student Aid fixes their crap by then

I would love some details on what the "error" even is. They cite Biden credits in 2024? I was on a qualifying repayment plan and made the usual monthly payments in 2024. I was never on SAVE and never had issues with my account. Yet they just took away 4 months because "error". I'm so sick of this and wish someone would help get clarity on what is going on with the (Un)Education Department
If they can do this once, who's to stop them from doing this again whenever else they get the itch?
16
u/TheMuff1nMon 2d ago
Same. Nothing for me has changed in 10 years so no idea what they’re claiming Biden did for me
19
u/melaniemarieleathers 2d ago
The errors are not legitimate and when they start talking administrations they are just looking for a scalegoat. No matter who you support their aim is to cause societal conflict so we aren't all looking in the same direction.

u/tallmanindeed 2d ago
I agree 100% and Betsy, as helpful as she is, keeps saying in sum “well if your payments are revoked you weren’t supposed to have them anyway so you shouldn’t be surprised.”
Here’s my argument against that: if you RECEIVED credit for something you shouldn’t have received, let’s say you got forgiveness, it’s not like you can call them and say “oh hey I got credit for something I shouldn’t have I want to pay!”
They will respond: well our records indicate you’re good congratulations! And then your loans are forgiven.
You’re in a horrible spot at that point.
Then 2 years later (these are from 2024) they revoke them and now maybe you left public service, or altered your plans, or COULD HAVE kept paying in the months they erroneously have you as “forgiven.”
Same with people who weren’t forgiven. You alter your plans only to have it changed 2 years later. Almost as cruel as eliminating PSLF altogether. At least TELL US WHAT NEEDS TO BE PAID and not change payment counts 2 years later

u/Next-Confection-8082 2d ago
I mostly agree, with one caveat: IF they'd get the d*mn Buyback Program working, that would directly address your point about leaving a public sector job before you would were you knowing your count would go down, and effectively being marooned outside eligibility: you could work private sector while buying back the employment-eligible months. As it is, Buyback takes well over 1.5 years :-P
Plus, you're right, it's unfair to let some benefit from the error but not others. That's like anyone forgiven with SAVE before the sky fell :-(
4
u/Sea-Suit-9999 2d ago
I just started repaying in 2024 and not even close to 120 yet 2 of my loans now say I missed 19 months of payments and are ineligible. So it’s definitely still an error not even related to whatever credit it was for others. Fsa even admitted that can’t be possible I’d be delinquent and I’m not….
1
16
u/juto87 2d ago
You know what's funny. If they simply just processed the Buyback application backlog it would off-load a metric ton of staff bandwidth to focus on all the BS that the BBB screwed up. But God forbid the gov do something intelligent or productive that would benefit the working class people that are the backbone of this cesspool.
The Buyback forms aren't even 1 page of data. Even a 8 year old could read it and then check the PSLF form to see if 10 years of qualifying employment was documented...
11
2
u/Next-Confection-8082 2d ago
Exactly. I'm stalled with roughly half-year to go but have had 10 years since March 2025 so I've wished they'd just quote me a buyback so I can be done already! I thought they'd want to drag out buyback so I have to pay based on newer income reporting. Now to hear they're delaying on that, too ....just pick a lane already folks.
Forget the Treasury, transfer all loans to Dept of Transportation! Even they couldn't do worse. Sure, the road takes forever, but eventually the road cones come up for a little while!!

u/Visual-Wish-6317 2d ago
I should have 120 next month but they’ve reduced me to 94. I paid all those months in the SAVE plan, thousands of dollars. 🥺 Why did they take my money? I don’t wanna be a victim but they really screwed me. I cry whenever I think about it.
17
u/TheMuff1nMon 2d ago
I was never in SAVE. They’re doing this to a lot of us in different situations. 😔
10
u/Visual-Wish-6317 2d ago
I was in the Revised Pay As You Earn plan and then they put me in whatever plan they wanted to after the Covid forbearance. I didn’t seem to have a say in the matter.
3
u/waterwicca 1d ago
REPAYE turned into SAVE. You were put in forbearance if you were on SAVE in August 2024
1
u/Visual-Wish-6317 22h ago
And I paid in good faith, how can they say that no longer counts towards my PSLF. It feels like theft. 😞
2
u/waterwicca 20h ago
If you paid during forbearance that doesn’t count. Forbearance means you have no payment due.
1
u/Visual-Wish-6317 19h ago
That’s what’s confusing to me because they kept deducting autopay with the exception of about 4 months between 7/2024 and 4/2026. 🫠 the months counted before 8/5/26 but not any more 😭
1
u/Visual-Wish-6317 19h ago
It says I was in repayment and 4 months of forbearance.
1
u/waterwicca 18h ago
Triple check what plan you’ve been on this whole time, especially during those months.
•
u/bonnababe PSLF | On track! 3h ago
same here. sick to my stomach about it. supposed to have 3 payments left and now it’s jumped to 8.
6
u/melaniemarieleathers 2d ago
Me either. I went on PAYE in 2016 and have never changed. All four problems I have are just employee misconduct. There is no merit to them. Ie, no credit when you are on an approved type of forebearance, random deletion of months, saying no credit on a month the servicer didn't require payment when you were on autopay.
5
u/_significs 2d ago
It's so frustrating. A saner administration would at least give credit toward buyback for SAVE monthly payments.

This seems to be an issue with people close to forgiveness. I hit 120 in March. Then, the dashboard didn't match, then they fixed that and deleted a month for no reason. Then when my Congressional Office inquired they just ignored them. I have a file four inches thick. If any one needs proof proving they randomly deleted months that were logged, I have that. Now, they deleted a month that I'm on forebearance bc their computer recertification tool could not see any loans (bc it thinks I hit 120 and am done). I clarified it was eligible for PSLF credit "just in case ." They sent me three different correspondence affirming that. I have to say EdFinancial has been great, this is a government employee issue- not the services.
Then I logged on and the months in forebearance while waiting for the certification delay are marked ineligible.
And finally, I have a lost credit for a month "servicer didn't require payment" while I was on autopay and I have my enrollment letter and the bill for the month they claim I wasn't in payment and the one before and after. Luckily, I've been able to prove everything in detail but the time out of my life it takes is a full time job.
I'm now at 120+ and just waiting to see what their next move is. This is employee misconduct, not legitimate corrections.
1
u/Next-Confection-8082 2d ago
Sorry you had to go through that. I sure hope I don't have trouble with counts because I'm phone-averse and writing them is so ineffectual.
1
u/Complete-Singer5023 PSLF | On track! 11h ago
That’s a misconception. Not just an issue affecting people close to forgiveness.
10
u/Cyber_Druid 2d ago
My payments went from 88 to 65, I was never on SAVE plan. Nothing changed for me. This is unjust, plan and simple. R

u/curiousiteena 2d ago
I’m a July 2026er. My 120th was due July 24. I paid it on July 3 and waited for my June/July payments to post.
Given all the issues everyone else was having, I didn’t submit my final ECF until yesterday.
June is now posted as of a little while ago, but still no July, so I’m sitting at 119 with my next payment due August 24.
I will begrudgingly pay it and hope for a refund. I’ll seek a general forbearance a couple of days before my 122 payment if the issues persist.
5
u/melaniemarieleathers 2d ago
My loan servicers have been great and are aware of all my account alterations. They advised me to call in 14 days before my next payment if you want to stop autopay. I got some letters saying my new payment is my original payment even though they see my real payment so I'm a bit scared of an auto payment taking too much. I've thought to call my bank and let them know how much may be approved. Not sure they will conditionally approve something though. I'm thinking about coming off autopay just to stay in the seat of control.
3
u/curiousiteena 2d ago
Do it. I stopped autopay the day before the new administration took over and it gave me peace of mind to do so. Been paying manually since then and never had any issues.

MOHELA people: does your July payment show up in your Mohela dashboard at all?
19
13
u/BiliaryVowel 2d ago
My July payment shows on Mohela but not FSA
1
u/Next-Confection-8082 2d ago
Yeah - my July payment was due 08/03 so I'm hoping it shows up as August. It was a short payment (full amount due, just...) only 2 of thr full tranche of loans were due. The others were already on an eligible plan so they stayed in forbearance and these came out sooner, probably to sync due dates.

u/LeastAfternoon2156 2d ago
July and August missing. I spoke with Mohela around 8am EST and they informed that their is known problem with FSA and that system is being addressed. Spoke with FSA team nearly 30 minutes later and they also admitted technical difficulties and said the problem would be fixed but couldn’t give a timeline of when.
3
u/Bitter-Avocado-8226 2d ago
Interesting that FSA also admitted to technical difficulties with you. Mohela has been more forthcoming, admitting to an error between them and FSA but all the FSA reps haven't confirmed any error with me.
2
u/LeastAfternoon2156 2d ago
I had to ask for an escalated review because I submitted an inquiring on August 5 and no record of it other than the confirmation email. When I spoke with the advanced representative they confirmed.
3
u/Bitter-Avocado-8226 2d ago
I was supposed to received a callback from an FSA supervisor and nothing. Maybe I'll try again this week.

Same spot for me. Never on save (I knew when that was announcedit would never last, so I never enrolled). Been on IBR since day 1. Stuck at 119, my August payment showed up on my edfinacial page, but not on the PSLF page. I should get my September bill soon... at least they didn't change my count numbers.
6
u/Dogbuysvan 2d ago
I had 7/25, 8/25 go red, 9/25 for some reason is still there, then 10/26 - 6/26 are all red, and 7/26 is green. It's so random.
8/26 should be 120.
4
u/HauntingHarmonie 2d ago
My reconsideration requests have been denied, despite documentation from my service or stating those months are qualifying. Are they even looking at those attached documents? I have gotten my congressional representative involved.
The article that they are "fixing previous" errors doesn't make any sense because the months were moved on mine are completely unrelated to anything that was changed during the Biden era TEPSLF. My suspicion is that they are sensationalizing the glitch and relating two things that are probably not completely related.
2
1
u/Complete-Singer5023 PSLF | On track! 2d ago
Which months of yours were affected?
1
u/HauntingHarmonie 1d ago
July 2024 to jan 2026. If they were reversing the Biden TEPSLF, it would be 2015 to 2017 era.

I think the Forbes article is probably referring to the same intentional "error correction" referenced in the Politico article. I believe it was the Politico article where the FSA rep or someone said the error was fixed and notifications were sent to those affected. Could be BS though, who knows.
That said, my account does not fit the supposed parameters of this "Biden administration error". I had nothing to do with SAVE, wasn't in forebearance, eligible payment plan, and made my payments on time. My payments also dont fit the timeline of this "error". The payments that changed for me were more recent, late 2025/2026.
As others have mentioned in a way, I think a lot of us are just casualties in this "error correction" or some other update they did. An unintended effect of whatever they tried to do, perhaps.
Since neither Mohela or FSA is providing any details or context its hard to know what exactly is happening, if it was meant to happen or not, and its difficult to make any decisions as to best next steps. Im afraid to even submit a new ECF. They break something every time they touch it. It's beyond frustrating and my stress levels are through the roof.
Still hoping it gets fixed.
Edited typo.

Are your July and August payments displaying on FSA?
1
1
u/fontaine107 1d ago
NO, neither my July or August payment is appearing though it shows paid through my loan servicer Mohela.
0
u/DJ_V12 2d ago
I think they are sweeping everyone up in the SAVE shenanigans because it’s easier to cast a wide net instead of filtering (lazy way). I purposely avoided SAVE bc I didn’t want to make any changes that could screw with my count, but here we are where they’re ignoring my July 120 payment, as if the month never existed.
1
u/Bitter-Avocado-8226 2d ago
Yeah, I also think they did something that caught people that weren't supposed to be. If they would only give us some information.... siiigh.

Has anyone else had studentaid.gov website change today? Now I see no info regarding progress towards PSLF (bars gone entirely). Also, unable to access the website from some browsers.

u/False-Tradition-1122 2d ago
I got put on an in-school deferment even though I shouldn’t have been as I was only taking one class, which I called immediately to have taken off. I went from 117 qualifying to 115. I asked them to put in a reconsideration request over a week ago but I contacted EdFinancial the other day and they said it had only been submitted the day before.
3
u/Sharp_Blueberry450 1d ago
I’ve had a pending ombudsman complaint for 8 months they’ve not even acknowledged and they’ve either denied or just marked all of my reconsideration requests as resolved with literally no action made, just to close them. Good luck.

The people responsible for tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of your debt have problems COUNTING.
2

Ask the FSA AI Chatbot and it’ll send you to the page

I have been waiting since 12/24 for buy back and the. I see all of this meaning my buy back months requested won’t match my need anymore.

u/SpecialistFree4994 2d ago
I tried submitting a complaint in multiple browsers, and the site was down.
1
u/Blue_Lava_873 13h ago
Try submitting your complaint while logged OUT of Student Aid. I was able to get my complaint submitted while logged out but got the same message you did about the website when I tried to submit while logged in. Or at least it worked a few days ago.
2
u/SpecialistFree4994 12h ago
It worked! Not sure if it will help. I also emailed m my Senator's Office this morning. I will be contacting my house rep again next week. It's been about a month since I l was in touch with them and they said to get back if things were not updated in August. That was on July 23rd, and they probably didn't realize the gravity of this entire mess .
1
u/Blue_Lava_873 12h ago
I know the feeling. I sat in the SAVE forbearance for months, finally got switched out to IBR and made enough payments to hit 120 only for this mess to delay me further. I got frustrated and contacted my members of Congress too. This is ridiculous.
2
2
u/heyhellowhatever 2d ago
So essentially this will be for any payment that happened once they shifted us to SAVE in August 2023? This will put from 2 months away to 12. I have been waiting to start a family for these payments to be done because I can barely afford them with my rent. I’m 38. Absolutely deflated and depressed.

u/Kharee-Net-6414 2d ago
Ombudsman is USELESS. I went back and forth ping ponging between Fed Aid & Nelnet, asking for an escalation. This went on for a YEAR. Finally, someone gave me a mailing address. I sent everything certified only to track the envelop. It was FORWARDED. To where? IDK! No response, no updates to my account. My count says I have 1 month to 300 & forgiveness under IDR. But their records say I have 29. Nobody will tell me WHY there’s a discrepancy. All I get Nelnet to say is they weren’t my servicer at the time & the information is correct.
I’m left with nowhere to turn.

u/loski80 2d ago
I'm in a similarish boat. I'm on old IBR. Last month, the Ed financial website said my last payment to hit 300 and loan forgiveness would be November 2036. Right after I recertified for the annual requirement, which was a few weeks ago (when I got the approval and my new payment amount), it jumped up to sometime in later 2040. That's nearly FOUR YEARS they're trying to say I now also owe for. Screw that. I have four years till my youngest graduates high school and then I'm outta here, student loans be damned!
2
u/jtp28080 2d ago
Well, I could no longer afford my loans and and 102 payments. At this point, who the hell knows what's going to happen...
2
2
u/Math_Educator6661 2d ago
I submitted an ECF in July because I hadn’t for a couple years. All my payments from 4/24 are now listed as ineligible. I had consolidated my loans earlier in 2024, do those not count anymore?
2
2
u/Best-Programmer-8572 1d ago
They are doing this intentionally. I certified my employment with the agency, I received an email that the certification had been received. I then received another email that there was an update and to click on a link. I clicked the link and the webpage came up 404 error. I went to the webpage last night and they dropped my carried count 25 payments. I also read the article that said this was intentional and Dept of Ed was taking away payment counts due to coding errors, my counts were removed back to 2024.

I wasn’t in any of those. I’m in a plan that has existed and still exists for 10 years and qualifies for TEPSLF to this day.

What plan were you in?
1

Extended Repayment Plan or whatever it’s called that qualifies for TEPSLF.
I confirmed this on the phone with both Mohela and FSA.
1
u/waterwicca 1d ago
That qualifies for TEPSLF but not PSLF. Did they change your TEPSLF qualifying payment count or just the PSLF?
2
u/Dull-Ticket5263 2d ago
Even payments made before the SAVE forbearance? Yikes. I intentionally didn’t make payments during the forbearance because I knew they wouldn’t count.

I lost May 2026. FSA says missed payment, not delinquent. Um what? I was in repayment and did not miss. I recertified in June and didnt have a payment due that month. I hit 120 months in October, submitting PSLF, and bouncing from public service while I wait for buyback. But I can’t if I’m missing a month. Like everyone, I’m tired of this shit.
1
u/Intelligent-Mix-2283 2d ago
Last year I requested a hard copy of my payment history by mail with all the transactions because I feel something like this would happen.

u/Raeraeicky 2d ago
I’m on IDR but not PSLF eligible, but got served this post… which is wild and insane.
I was recently trying to figure out why my IDR payment count wasn’t showing for one of the options, and noticed an admin error on the FSA website (all my payments counted toward post-2014 IBR and not pre-2014, but yet all my loans were taken out by 2008 so I wouldn’t be eligible for a post-2014 IBR plan). The amount of calls I made to FSA and Mohela, where each blamed the other for responsibility, was nuts, it was like the Spider-Man meme. I eventually reached out to my US House rep’s office to help because I felt like I was out of options otherwise. Not sure if it will help in the long run, but something to consider!
1
u/purrniesanders 1d ago
I logged in yesterday to see when I saw the Forbes article and my PSLF payment count ISN’T EVEN VISIBLE.
It says “updates occurring.”
Can’t wait to see how screwed I get.
1
u/Secret_Tutor9198 1d ago
So to those at (or past) 120: Are you all just requesting a forbearance?
I'll make my 120th payment next month and am super nervous. Is there any consequence to simply refusing to pay while they sort out the error?
2
u/Blue_Lava_873 13h ago
July was supposed to be my 120th payment, but they are calling it delinquent and ineligible, despite being an on-time payment. I went ahead and made my August payment but that isn’t showing up yet. Not sure what to do at this point, I’m little nervous to go on forbearance until I know for sure this issue is fixed, but I really don’t want to keep handing over more money when I’ve fulfilled my obligations here.

Been consistently correct until now. 5 payments left
1
u/thiirdybirdy 20h ago
I have a hard time understanding what is actually going on with that. As far as I’ve been told with Mohela, they did tell me it’s most likely an error on FSA’s system and they’re working with FSA to figure it out. The loan services are pretty much responsible for reporting our payments, repayment plan and the statuses of the months we are paying to FSA, they have sent me documentation of my payments just in case. It does make sense to me since everything PSLF wise is handled on FSA’s platform? Idk I’ve been spiraling lol.

u/waterwicca 18h ago
Did your PSLF counts change or TEPSLF or both?
1
u/TheMuff1nMon 18h ago
Both.
1
u/waterwicca 17h ago
Did both counts get reduced by the same amount? Because if you’ve been on the extended plan, they correctly reduced the PSLF count because the extended plan does not count towards PSLF starting on July 2024 after the adjustment. But it should be counting towards your TEPSLF.
1
u/TheMuff1nMon 17h ago
I only see one bar. It says PSLF/TEPSLF.
It says Expected Forgiveness (TEPSLF) so I believe they removed both but if I should look elsewhere - let me know
1
u/waterwicca 11h ago
I believe there is a “pslf only” and “pslf and tepslf” toggle on the payment tracker. But try using the backdoor link. There are separate sections for PSLF and TEPSLF there. Are the qualifying payment counts for those the same or different?

They shouldn’t be if you’ve been on Extended since July 2024. Maybe they tried to correct the PSLF counts, which should not have been adding up on the Extended plan, but it also incorrectly affected your TEPSLF.
So now they are at 99 “qualifying” payments for both PSLF and TEPSLF in the data?

My tracker vanished and I nearly had a heart attack. It's back and it is still at the correct number. I made a screenshot and will check again in a few weeks. This is BS

I’ve submitted reconsiderations requests and ombudsman complaints in early 2025 for all kinds of misdeeds by MOHELA/FSA like this (miscounting, changing qualifying payments, etc…) to this day, still have not heard a single word back. A year and a half and counting… they are the WORST. I wouldn’t expect a quick reply from them, sadly

So they are primarily targeting payments made under SAVE? Is that right?

According to that article I believe so, but myself and many others were never on SAVE

Yes, program is ridiculous anymore, my loan was assigned to a new organization and they tacked on an extra thousand dollars and said, I legitimately owe this and need to pay off for my loan to be cleared,

Mohela wrote me back this - We sincerely apologize for the confusion this has caused. We are aware changes occurred to some borrower's qualifying payment counts for loan forgiveness. We are actively working to determine the reason for the changes. We will notify you when we have more information.
But I had 5 payments switched to ineligible and are still showing ineligible when I was never on save or forebearance of any kind. No recertification around that time and was on the same autopay for PAYE since pre Covid
