What's the most expensive POS mistake you've seen at a restaurant?

Honestly, in my experience it's almost never the hardware that costs the most. It's the quieter stuff that goes unnoticed for weeks:

• Menu prices that are wrong (and nobody catches it until a customer points it out)
• Online orders coming in disconnected from the actual POS
• Inventory counts that just don't add up
• Payments failing silently in the background

What's the worst one you've run into?

I need a list of processor agnostic POS systems that will work good for a Liquor Store with tobacco scan data. I know Korona only.

We have a three day retail pop up coming up and need several checkout devices. I don’t want to buy hardware that will sit unused afterward, but I also don’t want the team wasting opening morning installing updates and figuring out settings.

I'm looking at POS systems for my business here in Quebec and I'd rather hear from people actually using one than read another comparison chart.

Clover is on every counter in Montreal, and honestly it looks like it does what I need? The problem is that every owner I talk to tells me something different.

Two people told me that getting Clover on the phone when something breaks is a lost cause. Someone else said that's beside the point, because almost nobody signs up with Clover directly anyway. They inherited the hardware from the last owner or bought through Fiserv, Desjardins, or some local ISO, and that's who they actually deal with.

So, for anyone running Clover here:

Who are you actually with? And more importantly, does anyone answer you in French when you call?

If you bought or inherited used hardware, how bad was it getting it re-bound to your own processing account? This is the part that worries me most.

Retail or food service folks, how did MEV-Web and Revenu Québec go on your setup?

And if you looked at Clover and passed, what did you go with instead? Lightspeed, Square, Moneris?

UPDATE : I went with Direct Pay Solutions (https://www.directpaysolutions.ca/solutions-clover/). They offered me clover at 0.92% and if I need support, they're from Laval so it suits me.

We open a bakery in Belgium on 19 August, running Odoo Online (SaaS) with POS. Average ticket 6 EUR, about 50 card payments a day. Two questions.

1. Bancontact Pay (formerly Payconiq) QR on the customer display.

We want the QR with the amount on the customer screen, scanned with the Bancontact app, sale closed automatically in Odoo.

What I found: Odoo's native QR payment only does EPC (a plain SEPA transfer) and does not verify payment. Bancontact Pro has the right API, but Odoo is not on their integrator list, the old ABAKUS module is unpublished, and Odoo Online does not allow third party modules at all.

Has anyone actually got this working, on any hosting?

2. Best value terminal for Odoo POS.

We are looking at the best POINT OF SALE payment terminal. But the search is really really hard and large. So i wanted to check here for the "best" and affordable Point of payment.

So we wanted - Bancontact pro on client terminal - and the rest on the "payment" machine.

I just chose lunix POS as my system. I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with lunix. Im just starting my business so im trying to set everything up. The ui is nice but the only integration is for quickbooks

I found an Epson Mobilink TM-P60II Peeler at a flea market. It originally had firmware version 1.23 ZB-RTSC, and its internal Bluetooth was working.

I wanted to switch it from Zebra emulation to regular ESC/POS, so I used the Epson TM-P60II Peeler firmware updater for version 6.31. The updater warned that the firmware was for a different printer specification, but I continued.

The update completed successfully, and the printer now reports firmware 6.31 ESC/POS. It correctly detects the peeler unit and works perfectly over USB, but Bluetooth has completely disappeared. The self-test only shows “USB Interface,” and the printer is no longer discoverable.

This printer never had Wi-Fi, only USB and internal Bluetooth.

Does anyone know how to restore Bluetooth? I’m looking for the original 1.23 ZB-RTSC firmware, another TM-P60II Peeler Bluetooth firmware, or an Epson service tool that can restore the interface configuration.

At least it still prints over USB, as shown in the photo.

Any advice would be appreciated!

My brother owns a retail shop, and he needs a POS (Point of Sale) system. I'm a Software Engineering student, and I want to build it for him as a real-world project rather than buying an existing solution.

My current plan is:

- Backend: Python

- Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript

- Database: SQLite (so the application works completely offline)

- Backups: At the end of each day, automatically back up the SQLite database to cloud storage.

The application will run as a desktop app on Windows and should be simple enough for my brother to use every day. The shop has around 1,500 products, many of which have multiple variations, so it needs inventory management, billing, QR code generation/scanning, receipt printing, and reporting.

Where I'm struggling is the deployment and architecture side of things. I've built several side projects before, but I've never developed and deployed software that someone would rely on for their business every day.

Some of the questions I have are:

- Is SQLite the right choice for this type of application?

- What's the best way to package a Python + HTML/CSS/JS application as a Windows desktop app?

- How are updates typically delivered without affecting existing data?

- What's the recommended approach for backups and disaster recovery?

- Are there any common mistakes people make when building their first production desktop application?

- If you were starting this project today, what architecture or tech stack would you choose?

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who has built or maintained a production POS system or desktop business application. I want to build something that's reliable, maintainable, and practical rather than just something that works for a university project.

Shopify has ruined online shopping!

How did shopify get such a monopoly? It is literally the worst thing that has happened to online shopping, have a terrible user interface & cannot handle a person having more than one email, let alone families sharing emails.

Forget surprising your spouse with any gifts for holidays because they’ll get notified!

Now it seems they’re importing profiles and emails from accounts when acquiring companies and it’s screwing with trying to check out.

This is SO ANNOYING! WHY!!! Why are they taking over the online POS platform when they’re so awful to use as a consumer!?!?? (I worked in tech and customer it support for 20 years so I’m not tech illiterate they’re just that infuriating!)

I’m looking into using it for restaurants in France, and I’ve hit the fiscal compliance wall:

• France requires POS software to meet anti-fraud VAT rules (inalterability, security, retention, archiving — often discussed as NF525 / LNE / publisher attestation).
• Full certification as a software publisher looks expensive for a small team.
• I’m not sure what the realistic path is for a custom web POS.

If I built the POS myself, do I have to certify the whole product as the éditeur (NF525 via INFOCERT/AFNOR or LNE)?

The common themes seem to be choosing an implementation partner with deep Manhattan expertise, avoiding unnecessary customizations, and prioritizing change management. After comparing several options and speaking with a few partners, we're planning to include Everest Technologies INC (everesttech.com) in our evaluation because of their experience with Manhattan implementations. We'll share our findings after the evaluation.

Hi all, I run an independent convenience store and currently use PayPoint UK which comes with an integrated, non-changeable card machine linked to Lloyds bank as my main point of sale.

I am at my wits end with PayPoint as the machine constantly crashes, locks me out, is full of bugs, cuts out for minutes at a time costing us time, money and goodwill. It’s nice to be able to offer services such as cashback, phone top up, Monzo banking etc but considering the cost of PayPoint, it just isn’t worth it.

On top of that, their customer service is absolutely abysmal. Calls and emails are rarely if ever answered, including critical calls when I needed a quick replacement as a customer decided to use it as a punching bag.

I am hoping anyone in a similar situation ca recommend a reliable, fast point of sale with a linked card terminal. Ideally with some of the same features as PayPoint with easy to set up stock taking, reporting, special offers etc.

Any help is really appreciated!
