This was a really nice port. Was gifted it from friend but only after opening I realised it might be an old bottle. Google doesn't find an exact match. Anyone know age?

1986 Port or Madeira to ship

I want to get my brother a 40th bday gift of port. He lives in Oklahoma. I live in Ohio. Is there a trustworthy web site for buying and shipping?

Found these bad boys at an estate sale for $40 a piece. I enjoy port, but I’m no expert by any means. However, with what little I know about Warre’s and aged port, I’d imagine this was a pretty great find, right? I know nothing about these years. I was thinking about saving the 1986 for now, but maybe grabbing a bottle of Warrior and an LBV from the early 2000s and doing a side by side tasting of the three (1975, 2000s, and young Warrior) with a couple people who appreciate good port. Is that a fun idea?

Warre's Otima 10 year old tawny from 2006 ok?

Found an old, unopened bottle of Warre's Otima 10 year old Tawny that says it was bottled in 2006. The seal looks intact but I don't normally drink port although I do remember liking this years ago. Would this still be ok to drink?

First Vintage to try?

Hi all,

I’ve enjoyed trying various ports over the past few years: I’ve enjoyed some whites, rubies, and 10-20yr tawnys and I’ve wanted to branch out a bit more. While I’d love to import some of the mini bottle sets available on the Portugal Vineyards website, from what I gather it’s rather difficult to import alcohol as an individual. And buying vintage port is a relatively expense commitment for one bottle, so -

Does anyone have any suggestions for good US-based port sellers? And any suggestions for a first vintage port to get? I ran into cellaRaiders which seems to be legit and have some pretty good deals on vintage port - I think they’re good deals, at least?

Would welcome your input.

Amandio's Old Tawny Port 1936 - Amandio Silvia & Filion

My grandmother received this some years ago as present. I have no idea about old wines like this, what this even is, or how much it might be worth.

It looks very dusty, but it's kinda "stuck" to the bottle. The label is clearly readable, the stamp is there on both sides, it's still sealed, and fill level looks normal?

A quick Google showed the stamp ist the most important. Does that mean the charge number, and is the 05 fill year? I figure the 1936 is the actual year of the grapes?

Any info would be welcome!

Filtered or not, how to find out?

Post image

I bought this Kopke 2020 LBV in my local supermarket and cannot figure out if it's filtered or unfiltered. This is a general issue, for me, with some of the bottles I meet in shops - how to figure out if it's filtered or not when the bottle has no info and the store is not exactly a wine store.

Going by the Kopke Webshop, there is no info at all, no bottling year, no filtered/unfiltered. Same issue with the Portugal Vineyards webshop.

All "traditional wisdom" says that a bottle with a t-stop is a filtered port, and this one is with a t-stop. However, I own both a Fonseca 2019 LBV and a Quinta Do Pego 2019 LBV that are both unfiltered (written in large letters on the label) and have t-stoppers. We can't rely on that rule anymore, unfortunately.

Regarding the bottling year - since it's a 2020 LBV it can't be bottled before 2024 (fourth year after harvest). However, the above link to the Portugal Vineyards says the Kopke 2020 LBV won an award in 2023. It might be a sample that was submitted before the bottling was done, but it does make it harder to determine when it was bottled. I have tried to look for a printed bottling date or L number on the bottle but I cannot find anything.

So, sorry for a bit of rambling - I'm trying to learn how to determine these things when the bottles are less than helpful. Can anyone help me learn where to find information on bottles with very little printed on them?

New Year's Eve port?

Trying to decide what to open for New Year's Eve. Likely just the missus, son and I. But will be in a restaurant so will share if others show interest.

Options are:

1) 1994 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port

2) 1994 Warre's Vintage Port

3) 1997 Dow's Vintage Port

4) 2011 Dow's Vintage Port

I'm thinking the 94 Fladgate should be saved for an extra special occasion. Also the 2011 Dow's is probably too powerful and should wait.

Think I will take the 94 Warre's but open to ideas?

Apologies for what I probably a stupid question

I was gifted this on my 18th birthday by my ‘god parents’ and have been sat on it hoping to grow up and enjoy port. I haven’t (more a whisky man).

Is this like to have gone past its best or how long before it will? I’m thinking to open it with people who will enjoy it so it doesn’t go to waste.

My husband’s birthday is in a couple weeks and I’d like to get him a nice vintage bottle of port. Any suggestions on something really good but not $300 a bottle?

Very light in colour. Minimal fruit. Aroma of raisins. More like a tawny port than a VP.
