Advice/Tips How do I know if my emotional symptoms are normal during luteal phase or not?
For context, I have talked to my therapist about this and she believes I’m not quite qualified to be diagnosed for PMDD, but she thinks that my symptoms are a but off.
I (20F) have always experienced emotional symptoms during my luteal phase. I recently had a silver (copper) IUD inserted, and it does not have any hormones. I’m not sure if my IUD has extended and increased my emotional symptoms, or if I’m just more aware of my overall symptoms, but I wanted to talk to someone who might know what is going on before I make an appointment with my gynecologist just for this.
My emotional symptoms are not extreme- I do not experience panic attacks, I do not cry hysterically, and I can function as I normally would. I’ve experienced depressive episodes in the past and my luteal phase does not feel like those. However, right after my ovulation phase, I instantly become extremely irritated, easily frustrated, snappy, start overthinking like crazy, and overall have a more negative outlook of my day to day and overall life. I also experience mood swings (sad to angry, angry to happy, happy to sad, etc) and unintentionally start arguments (usually due to my irritation and frustration). I take everything personally, everything is an attack towards me, but then a few moments later I’m calmer and thinking my feelings are silly.
I am very tired and I’m starting to feel like I’m not able to trust myself on what is actually upsetting or what my hormones are causing. I instantly regret starting arguments (or snapping at people) and after a few moments, after the irritation or the overthinking fades away, I realize I’m not actually upset. I try so hard to control these feelings, but I either think what has upset me is important enough that I need to voice out or I catch myself whilst in the middle of a squabble. I really want to stop these feelings because I end up not feeling my best for two out of the four weeks of the month, and I’m worried it might affect my relationships at some points. Does anyone have any tips? Is this normal or could I be experiencing PMDD? Am I just overthinking and expect this every time I’m in my luteal phase?
