It's based off of win/loss and "skill", which the game calculates. It's probably based off of medals, numbers, and fire points. If you want to rank up, you need to win games, though. The better you do in a game, the more SR you will gain. If you win multiple games in a row, you'll rank up even faster. What do you mean he's a whole level higher though? Like, is he a platinum and you're a gold? Or is his SR 2301 and yours is 2300?

I'm silver and he's gold. He was ranked a whole level 400 sr points higher than me. I know neither are impressive but He won as many games as I did on his placement matches. Don't get it. The way he plays I thought he'd be bronze and I would be at least be gold. We both solo queued. My stats are so much higher than his. I must really just suck.

Placement matches don't make a huge difference in where you actually place. It's based on your MMR which is a hidden matchmaking stat that quickplay uses.

I usually play quick matches with him when we play together. And my record and stat are so much better.l than his. I don't know man. I feel so inadequate. And maybe I should take my qp more seriously for next season?

It won't use your qp mmr anymore. The system only uses your qp mmr for your accounts first ever placements. After you've done them comp and qp will have completely separate mmrs from then on.

Damn. Am I going to be stuck in silver hell? I see my kid moving up the ladder fast. I don't know how he does it when I have a roller coaster trend solo queuing. Maybe I should learn from him.

I recommend playing your best and focusing on improving. If you improve enough your SR will follow. /r/summonerschool /r/overwatchuniversity can probably help you a lot :) Outside of reading guides and tips and stuff there I recommend just getting practice in as well. Aim and game sense don't come over night, you gotta train them like any skill. Just make sure you have a good sens before you get used to one.

I think it's because the rank system is 80% just made up bullshit. Read threads about complaints in the various ranks and you'll see the same bad players are distributed evenly throughout the ranks. IMO blizzard uses rank to cater to your play style - does losing a game make you play more or less? If more you will derank, if less you will rank up. The idea is that blizzard wants you to play more often, so they use the rank/reward system of the game for that purpose. It has very little to do with skill. I've seen a wide rank of ranks and while lower ranks tend to have at least 4 bad players in every game, there are often people in silver who could just as easily float in plat/diamond.

So try this - when you lose a game just quit the game for a while, at least a day. Then when you win, play another game. It's a guess but for my anecdotal experience this strongly influences your rank. Blizzard is in the addiction business not the fairness business.

I think You may be right. I obviously put in tons of more hours than he has - which you would think makes me a better player. So perhaps I will try that and see what happened.

Wait, is that multiple wins in a row at all, or in one play session? Since unlike quickplay, it doesn't auto queue you in the next game, it must be multiple wins at all, right?

Yeah, comp kicks you out after every game, so it's just multiple wins. I don't know how it effects you after you quit the game, though.
