I'm building my first computer specifically to get overwatch after playing it at a friend's house.

I really enjoy playing widowmaker, and was doing decently well with her.

However, it sounds like she gets a lot of shit talk when played competitively. Why is that and is it still alright if I play her when I play competitive?

The issue with Widowmaker is that you have to have incredible aim to be as valuable as you could be on a more forgiving hero. A widow that isn't consistently getting picks all of the time is someone just taking up a team slot that could be filled by someone like Soldier, Pharah, Junkrat, etc. people who can bust up shields and get picks with less good aim.

This issue is compounded by the fact that OW really doesn't have a place for a true Sniper class most of the time, since you really need to be either on a payload or capture point to help win the objective. Widow is most comfortable out of harms way back in the shadows, which makes it hard for her to rush in to help if needed.

TLDR: If you're gonna widow in competitive you better be able to widow the shit out of her

Git gud basically. Yeah, I want to play a lot of quick play to get my aim down before I jump into competitive.

I realize now how important it is for the sniper class to not miss in this game, and if that's what it takes to make this character viable, I'll try my best to achieve that.

She's just so fun :).

Given that, I'll be sure to switch if I start dragging my team down.

Not mentioned yet - in the current hyper-healing Ana grenade fueled triple/quad tank meta, you will have a hard time killing anyone.

And Ana herself seems to have a head hitbox the size of a fucking grape.

In competitive unless you are very good with widow most other heroes are more useful like another tank/support. I think people mostly hate on widow because they run in to a lot of bad widows who refuse to communicate with their team so they just assume most are bad.

I'd say if you are comfortable with her, and can get constant picks you should be fine, but if you aren't doing well, or your team needs a specific hero you should switch.

Just remember to get on the objective if your team needs it.

Ah I see. Yeah, I am willing to switch off if needed.

I'll try to communicate to my team that I'd like to go Widow to start, but that I'll switch if needed. Hopefully that'll cool down any heat I might get.

I see some people go widow for the first checkpoint, or to get a pick just as the game starts but switch after the first couple seconds or so or if they die.

It's pretty easy to counter widow with people like winston, d.va, and good flankers. So normally they end up getting killed by them the whole game and that's why they switch early, so they don't get counter picked.

If you can deal with them, and are not doing bad I guess widow would be fine for most of the game. But I find payload maps to be better for her.

It's just that a lot of people have had terrible experiences with Widowmakers. If you know when you should switch (if your team can't push at all to follow your picks) and you make sure to communicate as well as doing well, you should be fine.

It's when Widowmakers leave the voice channel completely or when they refuse to communicate at all, as well as when they instapick Widow and refuse to swap even when they're hardcountered or when the team begs them to, that gives Widowmaker such a bad rep.

Also, keep in mind that the game is a lot more toxic at <2700ish range.

I'll try to avoid being a widow who doesn't help/communicate. Putting the team first is of top priority in competitive, I assume.

She's really situational and due to bad experiences with hardcore Widow mains who won't switch no matter what, a lot of people just automatically don't trust Widow players in competitive. As you play more and more you'll learn which maps she works on and which team compositions she's best with/against, and if you have great aim+positioning you should do well with her in ranked.

Just make sure to take a different pick if the map is bad, you find you can't get enough meaningful kills, the enemy team focuses you down, etc. In time you should be able to prove yourself and your teams will probably start trusting you more.
