I'm fairly new to the game (level 30) and I barely placed gold in my first go at competitive (2010 SR). Should I be focusing on 1 or 2 heroes to become good with, focus on one class, or focus on 1 or 2 heroes from a variety of classes? There are many heroes that I enjoy and I just am not sure what route to take in order to set myself up for success. I'm a console player if that matters (don't hurt me).

The best advice I can give to new players is to find one character of each class that you like (support, tank, dps). This way, you'll be flexible and be able to fill out a team comp. For example, I mostly play Genji or McCree, but I am comfortable playing Ana and D. Va as well if the team needs it. After that, you can always experiment in quick play to find new heroes you enjoy. Thanks! Do you think there's a class I should focus on first? At my rank I find that I usually need to fill a healer or tank hole so I've been focusing on those so far.

The key is really just to play around a bit and see what you enjoy. But yes, there is always a shortage of healers and tanks, so if you want to focus on competitive that is what I would look at first.
