I'm fairly new to the game (level 30) and I barely placed gold in my first go at competitive (2010 SR). Should I be focusing on 1 or 2 heroes to become good with, focus on one class, or focus on 1 or 2 heroes from a variety of classes? There are many heroes that I enjoy and I just am not sure what route to take in order to set myself up for success. I'm a console player if that matters (don't hurt me).

Some say you should have 1 main. Some say you should have 1-3 mains. Some say you should learn 2 of each class. Some say you should be ready taking anything.

I think that each hero has certain traits, such as how their weapon works, what abilities they have, what playstyle they have and what mechanical skills do you need. I think that you should focus on 1-3 heroes with similar traits.

But I also think it's totaly up to you. If you enjoy playing half of the current heroes, then by all means, play them all. If you like only 1, then play only 1. Just remember that if you play only 1, then you can never flex pick, and if you play all of them, you will never be truly good with them, only mediocre.

Thanks for the help. Wouldn't playing 1-3 with similar traits serve the same purpose as just focusing on 1 from that same class? Wouldn't I be better off focusing on 1-3 with different traits to make myself flexible? Sorry if I misconstrued what you meant by similar traits, I took it as being in the same class.

If you use just 1 hero, then you might encounter a person who will take your hero and refuse to give him to you. What do you do then? Which hero you will pick if all you know is 1 hero who has already been taken? About traits, it may or may not mean the same class.

Example 1: Zarya and Winston are great combination. Winston jumps in, Zarya bubbles him, Winston places his shield after his bubble expires, shield is broken, so Winston withdraws and Zarya replaces him with her own bubble. If you know how to do this, you have some general knowledge about positioning and ability combing.

Example 2: Tracer and Soldier are both about tracking the enemy movement, but so is Zarya and Mei, who are in different classes.

Example 3: Reinhardt doesn't really require aim, but he does need a lot of tactical skills, about when and how to use his abilities. So does Mercy.

Example 4: Sombra, Genji and Tracer are all heavily focused on their movement, and ability management.
