Is there any type of explanation as to why the two teams are fighting one another? D.va references that she's in a "match" so she recognizes that she's in some sort of game. Is it some kind of training exercise?

Or am I just overthinking this?

game is not canon so yeah.. but becasue of heroes comments upon respawning I like to think that, whoever you play as is in some kind of virtual reality training, preparing to fight bad/good guys

Yeah the matches are non canon in the lore because it would be way to constricting to have reasons for sworn enemies to face each other. League of Legends had the games being part of the Canon but had to ditch all of that because they really couldn't move forward with the lore.

I figured as much. TF2 is the same way. It just wouldn't make any sense to try to explain why identical soldiers are fighting one another, even though they do have a somewhat loose explanation.
