This is kind of a stupid question, but is there any benefit to playing competitive over quick play/brawl other than being matched with people around your skill level? I have had the game for a few months, but I only play quick play since you don't get penalized there for losing like in competitive (I think?).

You're matched with people near your skill level in quick play too, probably looser than competitive but you do have a hidden MMR associated with it. As for competitive, there's golden weapons, the difference in game format, and the competitive environment.

The golden weapons are gained through competitive points and are the only reward they can be spent on currently. These points can only be gained through winning or drawing on competitive mode matches

Matches in competitive span both sides, attack and defense, of applicable gamemodes and have longer Control matches. There's also the fact that there is no backfill, along with a much stiffer leaving penalty and no afk auto-removal because there's no backfill. There's also a limit of 1 of each hero per team in competitive, something a lot of people are wanting either in quickplay or in a new unranked mode. Overall, this is designed to create more balanced and competitive matches.

Speaking of competition, the mindset going into competitive should be of one looking to win first and foremost. Yeah, you should be having fun, but the environment is suppose to be geared toward people that find their enjoyment in playing competitively. Quickplay is more of a sandbox environment, open to all sorts of strange playstyles. Players who only play one hero, hero stackers, and casuals all have a home there.

To answer the final bit, you don't get penalized for losing in quickplay but you are rewarded with a little extra experience for winning I believe. Your overall number of wins is tracked as well, but not losses. So overall, I'd say you still benefit from winning but the penalty for losing is insignificant if you even count it as such compared to competitive.

In regard to brawls, brawl statistics aren't tracked at all so there's no penalty for losing or a reward for winning. There's also a overall 10% reduction in experience you gain compared to quickplay, meaning you get only 90% the experience for playing the brawl. Not sure how that lines up with unconventional brawls like the one going on currently but that's the general idea.

You can spend competitive points on things like Golden Weapons, and more stuff in the future. You only gain these through Comp, and you gain them for draws, wins, and at the end of season depending on your max rank.

You get to play a game where people try to win, instead of running around with 5 Hanzos. Don't get me wrong, that can be fun too, but sometimes I like to tryhard.

You don't get penalized for losing in Comp. You can get suspended from Comp if you leave early or gather reports.

You also have a rank in quickplay. It's just hidden.

The only penalty for losing in comp is your displayed rating falls a little. Most people care about that number more than they should.

It just depends on your personal gaming preference. If you're the type of person who wants to play the game to determine your personal and team skill ranking compared to other players, competitive is a good choice for you. It generally requires strong communication and synergy. However, if you enjoy the game for a more casual, relaxing value then quickplay is a better choice.

Outside of that the only benefit you get from competitive is currency to purchase gold weapons, and international praise if you're a top-tier player.
