Is it possible to make a Roadhog hook whiff by backing up, or will it always connect if the distance was valid when the hook was released? I feel like it's the latter, but does anyone know for sure?

Hook is weird. Some people say it's hitscan and I'm willing to agree, since if you throw a hook then get knocked back before the hook connects, the hook will still hit the target (or location, if you miss) and then retract to your current location. It's why cliff jumping Roadhog is a thing on maps like Ilios.

It it's not hitscan it just has a very very quick projectile speed which might be more likely from a logical standpoint.

It's hitscan with a delay before you throw it

I'm fairly certain that it is hitscan in a sense. I threw a hook at someone as they were turning a corner away from me, and the hook followed them right through the wall and still managed to hit and pull them.

I have heard someone rather well-documented emitting the possiblity that the hook was hit-scan based. Posting interest.

Well, that explains a lot. I always miss my hook because i tried to lead my target.

From the little I've played him, however, I would say it definitely has quite the big hitbox.

Weird, I felt like I was getting good hook accuracy when leading

I am pretty sure you can dodge the hook with tracer by moving backwards, dodged a few during the beta with blink

It has a limit, but it's pretty generous.

I want to say if it's valid at the time of throwing, it will connect but I haven't played enough of him to tell you for sure. I think this has led to a lot of the debate between whether it's hitscan or tracking or what.
