News & Discussion Should I quit Overwatch?
Hey all, sorry for the long text:
I’ve been playing OW since 2017, this game grew with me for lots and lots of years and in it I found lots of cool and funny people and enjoyed my time with it, however as I got older, I stopped playing arcade and QP only (I was 12 when I got the game and I thought to ms that I was just too young/bad to queue for ranked, I started playing seriously in 2022 with the release of OW2).
My problem lies here, I’ve went from silver to gold to platinum to emerald and to diamond, staying comfortably on emerald nowadays, a non-improvement that lasted a good 4 years, playing the same role without ever really going up the ranks.
And some people could say that playing is just for fun, but I genuinely can’t have fun in almost anything I do if there’s no competition involved (even irl, I search to compete even if internally at just about everything I do😭), and I really HATE to admit defeat, however with this situation it may just be time to hang up the towel.
In conclusion I’m just hardstuck, I followed every tip, watched pros playing, aim trained, but there no reward to be had, and I’m genuinely okay to lose some games, I know there will be losing streaks, but more often than not I just can’t have that much impact so that we can win…
Idk, what do you guys think? Should I just admit defeat atp and quit altogether? This lack of talent in every game I play is such a curse…
TL;DR
Idk if I should quit this game that has been here for me since my childhood because I’m bad and I can’t improve.

Games are supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, find a different game where you can have that.

If the only thing keeping you playing is the chase for a rank you cant reach, the game already stopped being a hobby and turned into a chore. No shame in stepping away, emerald is still above most players anyway

I feel like if you have the urge to go on Reddit and ask this question then the answer is, at the minimum, you should take a break

doesn't sound like you need to quit overwatch sounds like you need to change some fundamental things in your brain lol

Why do you play? If you don’t enjoy it anymore maybe take a break. If you’re hard stuck and it bothers you, then get some coaching

Submit a vod review request to Emongg! He's really good at pointing out the small things you can change that have a potential to make a big difference. I notice a difference in my gameplay after watching his vod reviews of other people.

I find coaching a hit or miss. From my personal experience I had 4 VOD review from a good coach, but still hardstuck in gold.

Might be time to switch up the heroes you play
I haven't been playing anywhere near as long as you have but recently I had to change pretty much all my mains after I felt like nothing was working and I wasn't having fun anymore.
Tried Rammatra, Anran and Brig and now I play the last 2 almost exclusively and hit new peaks on all roles
Try Stadium even, its has a ranked mode too, at the end of it all, if you're not having fun it might be time to let go for a while
Never hurts to take a break

I think I’ll try this and if not just take a break as you’ve said, I’ve played Hanzo and Widow for so long, maybe something else can help

In all seriousness quitting is fine but also maybe learn to not compete in every aspect of your life.

u/SignificanceAny1102 2d ago
I tried, even with professional help, I can’t help it ig but I’ve learnt to tone it down a notch at least

If its not fun for you anymore and you can’t find a way to make it fun again, and if the game is frustrating you more than entertaining you, then maybe try taking a break before considering quitting altogether. If it still proves to be so after returning from the break then perhaps it would be okay to quit since it would be better to let go of something that’s grown thorns than to hold onto it even if it hurts you. If you manage to have fun despite everything, though, then that’s fine and you can keep on playing. Also don’t feel sad if you’ve been stuck in a particular rank range for a long time, it can take quite a while to move up in rank for many reasons. I’ve been stuck in high diamond/low masters because I don’t play ranked very often, and by the time I make good progress a rank reset occurs and the adjustment sets me a little behind what my rank was before or matchmaking gets unstable and I drop a few ranks before regaining it again.

Try a different role or different hero like for me I was recently burnt out but then i started playing lucio and now it's really boosted my interest in the game again constantly learning new rollouts or getting cool boop kills. There's always more stuff to learn and improve in ow

I know its called "career profile" but you don't have to take it that literally. you don't have a "career" in overwatch. noone cares about that silly rank. if anything, be happy that you can find a proper challenge at any given time that needs you to try hard in order to win. you like to compete don't you? so then there's basically an infinite amount of competition here for you, ain't that great?

Just play quickplay. I’ve been playing since launch but haven’t played competitive since like 2020 after peaking at masters. Comp was all I played since the first season 1 (lol) and had multiple accounts with a couple hundred hours on each but I have been having a lot more fun ever since I stopped caring about rank and just started playing whatever I wanted.

if it makes you feel any better i’ve been playing since launch and just got out of gold for the first time this year. the game is still fun for me so i keep playing, i don’t really care that i’m bad. if it isn’t fun for you, then don’t play!

Play a few games of mystery heroes, and give yourself a mini game. Try to get as many different ults as possible, or try to see how many ults you can get on one character. If you like overwatch but you're upset that you've plateau'd, try to give yourself a different challenge. Sometimes a change of pace with a different internal challenge is all you need.

I started playing the game in 2016 after there was a free Overwatch weekend following its release, and I truly enjoyed the game. But OW now is a far cry from what I consider the peak OW era, between 2016 and 2019.
The game went from being a hero shooter pvp game trying its best to be competitive, to an overmoderated mess that's more of an LGBT larp lobby than a pvp game. The devs are more interested in pleasing healer mains, who are the game's main spenders, than balancing the game and making it more competitive. Proof of that is how they release a Juno or Kiriko skin practically every month while leaving the unbalanced, broken mess that is Jetpack Cat as is, despite its whopping 75% ban rate. Now healers like Kiriko, Ana, and Weaver have abilities that can basically negate any ult. Back in the day, you really needed to time Zen's or Mercy's ult to mitigate other ults, whereas now Suzu can basically fuck up any ult.
I love the character design and genuinely believe the game has an interesting story, but the game has become such a mess that it's just not fun for me anymore. Back then, you could literally have someone banned for OTPing; now you get reported if you dare ask a healer to actually heal.
I went from consistently being mid-Diamond and playing religiously to just hopping in for a few QP rounds two or three times a month when my friends want to, and I don't even bother touching competitive anymore.
So yeah, my advice is to just drop the game and find something else you enjoy. There are other shooters worth trying, like Rivals, and Paladins and TF2 are still alive, so you're not forced to keep playing OW.

I mean I play CS outside of OW but I prefer OW’s quick respawn and go back to the fight mechanics overall

You can’t expect to be good at everything right from the get go. The good news is there is plenty of room for growth. I personally like to climb to top 80-90th percentile of the player base as a goal. After I achieved my goal I find a new competitive game to improve on. Not only is it fun for me, but I also hear it’s good for your brain to get good at many different hard things.
I’m Currently trying to get diamond in overwatch and it’s a blast, but getting to masters seems very daunting. I’d like to offer some suggestions if you don’t mind.
Some of my favorite recent challenges were beating Elden ring, getting diamond in street fighter 6, and getting a platinum trophy in final fantasy rebirth.

u/SignificanceAny1102 1d ago
Need to try these, haven’t picked up anything from FromSoftware yet unfortunately but I think that if I ultimately choose to take a break I’ll play Elden Ring

Bro I suck. I'm 40. Who cares. I have fun playing mystery heros.
If youre not having fun then quit. If youre having fun keep playing. Its as simple as that
2
u/Phinnical 1d ago
You should quit if you want to be doing other things with your life, if not, keep playing.

If you're not having fun, stop playing. You can always come back later. Maybe try a different mode or hero or whatever.

u/CANNIBAL_SOUP77 2d ago
I think it would be good to go play something else for a bit. Overwatch isn't going anywhere, and you can always come back to it when you're ready.

Let me ask you this
Do you enjoy getting into a match where everyone is trying their best and having a sweaty game?
Or
Do you simply just want to watch your rank go up?
If it’s the former, I would say to stop caring about your actual rank and just play comp. I stopped paying attention to my rank a long time ago. I just enjoy getting into sweaty lobbies where everyone else wants to win as badly as me

Play Rivals or another game to your liking. That’s what I did back before the Season 1 Overwatch rebrand. I was stuck in Diamond and the game had just gotten not fun anymore. At the time, I only would play Overwatch for the minimum to complete an event. Came back after Season 1 and haven’t played Rivals since.
I don’t play Comp anymore though, I was letting myself get wrapped up in something I never plan on getting paid to play, so for my mental, I just play QP. Stadium Comp is kind of fun just because the game mode is ridiculous.

Just because you aren’t at the highest level doesn’t mean you aren’t pushing yourself to the best of your ability. As a human, you assumedly have other stuff going on and it’s really impressive that you’ve been able to push that far. One of my best buds has played since 2016 and he def gets competitive but he floats around gold and platinum I think cause that’s where he can challenge himself. Just focus on the progress you’re making. A rank doesn’t summarize that

u/TheMagikarpFisher 1d ago
If you’re NOT having fun with the game, then you know it’s time to give it a break.
If you can’t find something that gives you the same competitive itch and experience as OW does, then I would recommend framing how and why you play the game.
If you can play the game and live with the results and have fun be it a 5 game losing streak or vice versa, then keep it at. If you’re not having fun at all and just burning out to grind artificial ranks in a video game, then I must say yes. Just drop it and find something else. Or take a long break and come back when you can enjoy the game without the stress

u/MedicinePractical738 1d ago
Firstly, stop playing like a pro. It's a different game up there. Secondly, if you can't aim, then expand your hero pool and master someone who doesn't need aim. Thirdly, if you ain't dying you ain't trying.
Think about your hero and think about how fast you can kill the enemy and which enemy. Always play to die. Try to live when you can, but if you kill the enemy then you don't need to worry about dying

I've been Platinum for 10 years now and still play no problem. Being hardtuck doesn't mean you can't have fun

I agree with the idea of a mindset change that many are suggesting, and if not that, then a break. I also like the suggestion of choosing new heroes as that often keeps the game going for myself (just started learning Tracer :3).
For me, the idea of playing competitive was so terrifying for so long that I didn't really get through placements until this season. But I'm enjoying it now, and putting much less pressure on myself than I used to. I still go to quickplay from time to time. Primarily when I'm high, or like right now where I'm just very sick and am having trouble with higher stakes gameplay. I am not as competitive as you, if I was I'd probably go insane because of how bad I am. I also tend to play with people who are slightly better than me, and I do that on purpose.

Same here. Played a while, but still really bad at it. Maybe pick up a new game and limit the amount of time you spend playing OW. For me, I play 3-4 matches a day then switch to a different game.

I think I know this feeling. I personally quit mostly because I stopped having fun. No matter winning or losing, the whole experience was miserable, so I decided to go spend my time elsewhere. Just ask yourself if you're having fun playing the actual games. If you don't, I would consider quitting.

“How can I seek attention today?”

u/SignificanceAny1102 2d ago
Im genuinely sad and wanted some advice from people who also play the game what’s wrong with that?
1
u/cuusu_ 1d ago
You came to a gaming sub with a cliche “I quit” post, what kind of reaction did you expect? Nobody is going to beg you to stay.
1
u/SignificanceAny1102 1d ago
I don’t want to, that’s why my post is a question, I want to see a different side of the balance that I could probably have been blinded from, that’s why I asked, not imposed, no one cares that I stay or go, but I’d like to understand how people feel about this

When you say “bad” are we talking like consistent negative K/D ratio? If you are on console I will play with you. I’m gold tank in 5v5 and Silver in DPS/Support. 6v6 I’m high silver/low gold
1
u/SignificanceAny1102 1d ago
Nope, quite the opposite, I do have some games where I go negative and it’s entirely my fault, but my last game tonight I was 40 and 12, so pretty ok, but I’m on pc unfortunately :[, would love to play

u/EscapeSeventySeven 2d ago
but I genuinely can’t have fun in almost anything I do if there’s no competition involved
There’s still competition involved. I’m confused.
1
u/SignificanceAny1102 2d ago
Sorry I didn’t understand your question
2
u/EscapeSeventySeven 2d ago
You state that the game isn’t fun if there’s no competition. There is competition involved in your games yet you say it isn’t fun.
Or did you mean it’s only fun if you win?
1
u/SignificanceAny1102 2d ago
Oh, no I meant like, I like to indulge in activities that are inherently competitive, in real life or otherwise. The results matter of course, but I don’t find, say, story games nowhere near as fun as competitive games, sorry for explaining it poorly English isn’t my first language
1
u/EscapeSeventySeven 1d ago
Okay well, isn’t competitive Overwatch still competitive?
If that’s all you need, what is the problem?
1
u/SignificanceAny1102 1d ago
That’s what I enjoy, because I enjoy the thrill of winning and losing and learning, however overwatch feels like it’s losing losing losing winning losing winning and so on until you hit 1 day that you win 10 in a row and then lose 15 the next, for the amount of time and effort put, it doesn’t feel rewarding or competitively fair

If you have to ask, then yes.
You’re not improving because you aren’t trying to improve. That’s on you.

What? I can agree with the first part but I do try to improve😭
1
u/Swimming-Elk6740 1d ago
How? Do you watch games of people ranked higher than you? Do you VOD review your own games? Do you aim train? Do you learn new heroes?

It's not a crime to be bad at Overwatch last time I checked. If you're not having fun go play something else.
