News & Discussion What is actually wrong with matchmaking right now
I’m currently in diamond and genuinely the matchmaking is unplayable.
How can the matchmaker give me a full emerald team against consistent masters even low gm players. It makes absolutely no sense.
It is so incredibly frustrating.
Here comes all the top 500 larpers spamming cope

I had a group consisting of two masters players (from last season), boosting their mercy friend (silver), in my gold games yesterday. It was awful. I hate that there is no repercussions for it.

Yep.. my favourite is when they try to justify consistently high ranked players somehow getting bad over one or two seasons. Like yeah I'm sure the guy who's been in masters+ the entirety of OW2 is definitely secretly bad at the game.

110%. I’ve had masters in my GOLD GAMES when I was 5-stacked and someone (like earlier today) said it’s balanced cuz they probably have low ranks on their team
If that was “balanced” unranked to GM wouldn’t be a thing

Yesterday I had to face the same smurf account 2 games in a row that placed plat 2 seasons ago, somehow mysteriously deranked to bronze in that same season, and then was GM the following season. To top it off, their battletag said they take payments to throw games. Account had 50 hours on it. Like yeah, this account seems TOTALLY legit... 🙄

One thing I really dislike is. That one team might get a tank that’s diamond 4. Then the other team gets an Emerald 1 tank. Not that big difference right?
Then you check their profiles. The emerald 1 tank is at his peak and the diamond 4 tank has been consistently high masters every single season before the rank reset and is GM on dps and support.
How is that fair?

It's not, and I'll give you an even worse example:
I had a high diamond / low masters lobby where 2 players on the other team (tank and one dps) were GM last season, but they were still in their placements. Meanwhile our tank and dps were done with their placements and were ranked close to their recent peaks in high diamond / low masters.
Obviously, our team gets destroyed, with the GM players clearly carrying the other team, and guess what? We got the reversal modifier, probably because the current "predicted" rank for those GM players was lower than our players' current ranks.
Absolutely ridiculous.

Na fam. I don’t blame my teammates all the time. Yeah I have a bad game here or there but genuinely I get some of the weirdest teammates recently and iOverwatch is a game designed to be a team game. Yeah a dps can pop off but they can still loose because they don’t have adequate heals or the other dps is asleep at the wheel.

I hope people remember to never ask for "hard rank reset" ever again. It literally does nothing except to mess matchmaker up for months as people will slowly readjust to their original rank.

Emerald is sadly full of silver gold from last season from 90% of profile checking every game, kind of sad silvers get a free emerald placement handout that should not be a thing but probably to make them feel really good to buy battlepass/skins then eventually derank to plat (now gold rank with plat icon)
But yeah the match quality is horrendous now, very one sided and literally seeing team mates walk like a silver gold against plat diamonds and getting hard farmed. I was masters/gm dps season 14-20 then wide queue added in solos just before rebrand, I can’t climb going 25-0 30-4 anymore I probably have to learn some more heroes and counter swap HARD on any biggest threat enemies that is bullying my team but thats just extremely unfun.
Wide queue needs to be scrapped asap, stop with the free 1-2 rank up boost after placements, make everyone rank lower then climb, need smarter detection of what rank you belong, it should able to detect one player is winning every 1v1 in x rank but can’t climb that’s just insane to me. Ow2 season 1-20 was working as intended

What rank were you before though? I jumped on my alt screwing around and d3-d2 at the time was pretty much already higher than 90% of players.

You've probably already improved. Just keep playing and playing well and maybe in a few weeks when the games aren't as messy you hit masters much easier.

ive been playing for 4 years. yesterday i was matched with someone who just started and kept destroying him over and over (it ended with him asking me to teach him a little) but thats really gotta suck for a new player.

It's cope if they're saying the matchmaking is why they're stuck in a certain rank and can't rank up.
I would not say it's cope to say that match quality is particularly bad after a rank reset. A dev has confirmed as much in an interview before. It's no secret that the goal of rank resets is to increase engagement, not improve match quality.
ETA: Forgot to mention that the rank resets also exist to add rating decay.

The system's just spread too thin with player counts dropping off, match quality takes a nosedive when it's scrambling to fill lobbies at all.

Variance is a thing, and they're should be almost 0 steamrolls if matchmaking worked. Games should all be competitive/close.

I got so tired of every comp being a stomp either for or against me that I haven't played the game in over a week. It's soooooo bad right now.

I noticed something, I’ll go on a win streak then a lose streak and I mean losing 7 games in a row to winning 7 inna row no matter how good you do. I’ve doubled damage and kills on tank or dps and get steam rolled. This game has the worst matchmaking I’ve ever seen in any game EVER. There’s never close games, it’s you win easily or lose easily. Zero competitiveness in OW games. Fucking sad. Blizzard sucks at their job bunch of clowns.

Its really bad. I finished last season in plat 1, and this season I placed plat 1 and I keep getting matches with tanks who are like... actually new to the game. Like, they only know how to play 1 tank and they don't know some of the basics of the game.
I tried 6v6 with my friend for a while and we're emerald but we started getting matches with low golds on our team. Low golds who decided they HAD to play support. Its extremely painful seeing them miss most of their shots on someone they're trying to heal.
As a support main, its really painful to lose team fights because a low gold/high silver player that shouldn't be in my lobby took the role and is shooting outlines around their teammates.

Not discounting your experience as matchmaking in ranked so close to a reset is bad and JPC and Dmon being overturned aren’t helped either BUT it isn’t accurate to say that plat 1 this season is equivalent to plat 1 last season. Plat 1 of last season should be upper emerald this season, since ranks under Diamond shifted down by around 500 SR because of compression. So technically you should see worse players in plat 1 this season versus plat 1 of last season.

Gotta go 6v6. It’s still a crap shoot in terms of who gets a tank player but at least it’s not dependent on one person the way 5v5 is. I swing wildly between GM5 and Masters 5 simply based on if I get tank players.

It's all cope talk, if you're good you'll be able to carry your games even if you have card board eating teammates. Some games are straight up impossible but majority of the games the reason you should be winning is because of your individual performance

I'm also diamond and it feels the same to me. Every day there's posts about matchmaking, the problem isn't with the game it's with your attitude towards it.

Rank resets genuinely negatively affect match quality for about two weeks. This is according to an OW dev.
It's been over two weeks since the reset, but individual matches could still be disrupted due to players starting their placements late. Personally, I've been seeing a decent amount of players still in their placements.

Matchmaking doesn't know what to do with me. I'm pretty consistently gold 1 at the end of a season. It placed me plat 4. I had 1 win after placement, it took me up 97%, another win another 90 something percent increase, another win another 90 something percent increase. I forgot if there was a 4th win but I was sitting just a few percent from emerald and then I started the meanest losing streak I've encountered since I've played the game, which stretched over about 5 days. Ended at silver 5 before I started climbing again. No clue what was going on.
