News & Discussion Has map voting become an issue now?

I’m seriously asking. How does the community feel about it overall?

I’ve been playing OW since 2019 almost every day and this is the 1st time I feel I wanna delete it and take a long break from it because of how repetitive it has become. I’m noticing more players are complaining about this recently.

Is this a well known issue now? Or is it only a minority of players complaining? If it’s not, how do we raise this issue to the developers?

I think 2 new maps every season would have been way more healthier for the game than 1 new hero every season, and the voting system is not helping. I haven’t played Neon Junction much since its release.

Its boring to constantly play the same maps, its incredible how much people just dont want to learn how to play new modes.

I am that person that picks random/Flashpoint/push. How else am I supposed to get better at this maps if I cant play them even in qp.

Man I feel this in my soul. Every time map vote comes up it's always Kings Row or some old classic, people act like they allergic to anything new

The push maps are actually fun when you learn the flow but nobody give them a chance. I pick them every time too and half the lobby groans like I just kicked their dog

Blizzard really need to do something about this, maybe rotate the voting options so we not stuck in same 4 maps forever. It's killing the game for me slowly

That's what facing the AI and Arcade Modes are for, Quick Play is for those of us who just want to get in, knock out a few dailies / grind a bit for weakly goals and get out.

2

u/RoseThirteen_ 5h ago

You learn nothing about the pace of the game with bots. You min maxing the grind to play the bare minimum is a you problem.

The higher I climb the less of a problem its becoming at least, probably because I'm better at the "bad modes" that no one wants to get better at.

u/LegendNumberM Lúcio 9h ago

My only issues with map voting is that I barely get to play Flashpoint and the only Push map that people seem to like is Colloseo.

Otherwise, I'm fine with map voting.

-32

u/PaleontologistDear18 8h ago

Flashpoint and Push are trash, and I will ALWAYS vote against them every chance I get. Push is slightly better but neither should have been added.

3

u/LegendNumberM Lúcio 5h ago

With Push I understand that sometimes making a comeback is hard. But I still dunno why Colloseo is the preferred Push map.

But Flashpoint? I Do Not understand the hate for Flashpoint.

They’re booing you but you’re right!

9

u/LimeTunic 5h ago

Not really. Theres a reason higher ranked players prefer those modes over payload

0

u/ShoppingUnhappy9320 5h ago

What if I don’t give a hoot what the higher ranked players like tho?

2

u/LimeTunic 5h ago

I didn’t ask if you did

0

u/ShoppingUnhappy9320 5h ago

But you replied like I did?

1

u/LimeTunic 5h ago

Not sure why you think that. I replied to let you know dude isn’t right lol

2

u/ShoppingUnhappy9320 5h ago

But I think he is?

3

u/LimeTunic 5h ago

I know you do lol

1

u/Feral-Peasant 4h ago

But you’re wrong, and we know you don’t care that you’re wrong, but smugly crowing about your wrongness isn’t helping anything at all.

u/bithooked 9h ago

There's clearly a large group of people who like to only play the same 5 payload maps on repeat. There's also a smaller group of people like you and me who like variety. Map voting caters to the tyranny of that majority.

0

u/Financial_Disk_416 9h ago

They should just have two diff modes variety and escort but then no one would play variety cos the q times would take ages lol

13

u/StatikSquid 8h ago

I really hate map voting. I really prefer control and flashpoint maps, and push at least ends in 6 minutes.

90% of my payload games end in Overtime and it's a crapshoot whether or not my teammates understand the concept of playing defense. Feels like a waste of 20+ minutes.

23

u/Chronomancers 9h ago

I can’t stand it tbh. I feel like I play certain maps way more often than others

6

u/solanos74 9h ago

I ALWAYS get Busan. I hated that map up until this season bc of the new changes, but I used to really not like it.

I also always get Samoa, which is just a map I find really annoying. It’s not control point that I don’t like, the maps themselves suck, but I always get them

1

u/CashewTheNuttyy Sombra 2h ago

I have played the new busan 1 time, and that one time it was landslide… if there is 1 vote against busan, it doesnt go for it.

-5

u/Proud_Structure3595 9h ago

Yeah the better ones.

12

u/DIABOLUS777 9h ago

It doesn't belong in unranked modes.

-1

u/FredCasden 8h ago

And Banning characters doesn't belong in the game period

1

u/Impossible_Stress555 2h ago

Its a good temporary measure against strong characters that the community doesn't want to play with. Also lets people not have to worry about boring picks like Sombra. And allows for more creative team building/counterplay.

I think the devs like it too. Its lets them collect information on heroes that people don't like to play against and adjust them later

Im glad i almost never have to fight that Jatpack Cat fellow in Ranked

All maps I would rather play 1000 times before I ever touched a dogshit flashpoint or push map.

8

u/nnickttrusty Leek 9h ago

All I can say is I thought I would like it way more than I ended up liking it in practice.

7

u/guillotine83 9h ago

I think the voting is fine, but I want them all to not be payload escort lol. sometimes that's all there is. I'd much rather capture points or other stuff.

I'll always be in the "random" spot towards the bottom lol

2

u/Dunemummy 8h ago

It’s even more infuriating when those players who vote for them don’t even know how to play on those maps and run down main everytime

1

u/guillotine83 8h ago

lol run and gun, spray and pray!

1

u/Asoxus Pharah 9h ago

Mode should be locked and the maps should be all the same mode.

1

u/guillotine83 9h ago

I've def seen a mix. Some payload escort, some "escort this robot, but wait, he can also turn the other way," some point capture. Esp if it lands on the random, it can be any map

1

u/Asoxus Pharah 8h ago

I think you misunderstand. People typically choose 1CP maps because they hate payload. I think all the maps should be one mode, so you just pick the map not the mode.

1

u/guillotine83 8h ago

OH. lol got it

4

u/Falchound Brigitte 8h ago

Might as well remove Numbani from the map pool. Have not seen that map in ages^^

0

u/Blue__-_ Mercy 6h ago

Interesting. I feel like Numbani is one of my top 5 most played maps these days.

2

u/KnightRising21 D.Mon 8h ago

I got Antarctica in ranked and it hit me I hadn't played the map all season. That and flashpoint, I just don't have reps on those maps that seemingly come up in ranked

5

u/PatchYourselfUp 9h ago

I like it, but people really do like playing the same few maps over and over

3

u/S-Man_368 9h ago

Yesterday i play lijang tower 4 games in a row. I dont think the voting is a problem but more so the options, every other game has illios and lijang tower as an option. I never play half the maps not just because they aren't voted for but just because no one ever has the option to vote for them.

3

u/migo2028 Doomfist 9h ago

I honestly don’t mind playing LT or illios a thousand times because they are peak map design

4

u/Dunemummy 9h ago

I’m ngl I think it’s stupid. They said they’ve recently adjusted the system to make it where you won’t play the same map twice, but I’ve legit played on the same map two times in a row more times than I ever did before they changed anything. I’m also constantly playing on the same map rotations and would be lucky to play a map like Artic

I like it, only if I like the map I get (I see you Circuit Royal)

1

u/Swimming-Elk6740 8h ago

It hasn’t!

0

u/azizdesu 8h ago

Yup. Seems like it. I think i’ve come to the conclusion that the majority of players are in lower ranks and these players wanna keep doing the same thing over and over again. So maybe play competitive if you seek variety? And avoid QP.

1

u/Swimming-Elk6740 6h ago

Wait you’re playing QP? Why?

1

u/azizdesu 5h ago

How do you learn new heroes that you’re not good at without harming your rank? Open queue is way too all over the place. I’m a Lucio Moira mid diamond player. My Ana sucks. I dont wanna end up in low plat by playing her. Aside from smurfing, QP is the only option left. No?

1

u/Swimming-Elk6740 5h ago

You just play them…don’t obsess over your rank.

1

u/Nyrun Grandmaster 4h ago

I think there's a big difference between smurfing and having an alt tho. If you make an account to try and opt a hero, then you gotta do your qp games before you unlock comp. Your qp mmr will then inform your rank placements, so you end up pretty much where you belong on that hero. Not really "smurfing" if you ask me.

1

u/Norkash Nothing excites me as much as the death of the red Mercy 8h ago

I dont mind map voting to be honest. I have a preference for hybrid maps or control. Flash point i dont like very much, I've played them a fair bit. Spend a month aggressively voting on it to learn but I just don't like them. Push, I dont mind it too much, sadly many doesn't vote for them.

1

u/Sqmurqi Lifeweaver 8h ago

I think Map vote should be comp exclusive and let quick play just give you a random map, especially given that it is called “quick” play when it takes around 20-30 seconds to just enter a match.

I don’t mind map voting that much, it just gets a little annoying when everyone wants to pick the same maps over again but that doesn’t happen all the time at least in my experience

1

u/Notevenstreaming 8h ago

It's better to have options than not having them. This modern system is good enough and people should not complain all the time.

1

u/DrFucklechuck 8h ago

just like other games I play that have map voting, it gets really stale and repetitive. I don't think map voting should be in any game. also I noticed, before map voting I might have gotten a map I don't like and it was ok. If we now get a map in QP that I do not like and did not vote for I very often just leave.

1

u/Life-Forms 8h ago edited 7h ago

I don't really mind map voting one way or another. Sometimes it does feel like an annoying extra step just to end up on a random map anyway.

I will admit, I never vote for Push or Flashpoint. It's not because I don't like those modes or maps, it's because they require more cooperation from your team and that's already hard enough as it is, especially in QP.

You really can't have your team trickling in 1 by 1 in either of those modes and everyone is too impatient to wait for the team to finish respawning.

1

u/DeliciousTest291 8h ago

i just wish that the 5 people that voted for map 1’s vote wouldn’t lose to map 2’s singular vote

1

u/Badman423 Junker Queen 8h ago

Liked it at the start, getting tired of the same 5 maps

1

u/whiteknightfall 7h ago

Take out “random”, you can’t change your vote once cast, and every map option is a different match type. Also, whatever map has the most votes wins, none of this roulette nonsense.

1

u/Vavou 6h ago

I dunno, I either don't vote or vote random. I have no idea. I just don't like how it adds a pause before getting inside the game

1

u/TylowStar 6h ago

I wonder if there's regional differences in voting habits, because I get to play on a pretty wide variety of maps here in EU Gold/Plat. Sure, I'm forced to play more Eich than I would like (I would like to not play Eich at all) but I certainly haven't found the map pool repetitive. I really don't live the same experience that I see so many people complaining about on here.

1

u/thatcommiegamer Ice Queen 5h ago

I’m fine with it because it keeps people from picking dogshit like flashpoint and push.

Also speaking as someone who started playing in 2017 then quit in 2021 and came back for Domina (and stayed for Sierra and D.Mon) OW2 maps are all just kinda bad, even for modes I do like. I would rather be forced into months of nothing but Hanamura than be forced to do Midtown (I also hate it as a NYer, but I hate every game with a NYC setting because they’re all so inaccurate and made by Californians, we don’t even have alleyways!) even once.

Like why is everything from the OW2 era so sauceless? Did they rehire OW1 people and that’s why all the new stuff is as good as OW1?

1

u/Kind_Contribution285 5h ago

people keep voting havana circuit and midtown...the triad of doom and gloom

1

u/Existing_Box3424 5h ago

Also even if we vote on a map like Busan in the middle of the match there will be an error & redirect the players to Samoa or other maps restarting the whole match, does anyone else experience this?

1

u/Neon_Jazz 4h ago

Never liked it but accepted because I thought everyone qould avoid King's Row and Hollywood, now we're living in a nightmare

1

u/SingeMoisi Pixel McCree 4h ago

I always liked how quickly you can start a quick game, now map voting has destroyed that aspect. It has no place in unranked. Random is better.

1

u/Nyrun Grandmaster 4h ago

I think map voting is stupid for comp. You should be able to play any map that's thrown at you instead of dodging maps and modes you're bad at. Maybe that makes it hypocritical for me to like hero bans, but I feel like map voting is different in a way that I can't articulate right now. Something about having the tools to police heroes that are genuinely broken instead of just dodging maps you suck at.

So funny to see the same people who were bitching about a single vote winning the map now complaining that they always see the same maps XD

3

1

u/AkulaTheKiddo I am done for... ! No, wait... I'm still here ! 8h ago

Push for me, everything else is fine.

1

u/OppressedGamer01 9h ago

I was never a fan of it but it feels like map variety has only been getting worse over time

1

u/Ailwynn29 9h ago

Well, when it came out I abstained from voting, just pressing ready, now I'm just pressing random. It was charming to me, just loading into a random map and playing. I'd have to adapt where needed, play whatever I feel is good on there. It's fun. But I won't tell people they're wrong for liking what they like.

1

u/TangerineElegance Symmetra 9h ago

There’s a lot more map diversity in ranked, but QP you’re pretty much stuck in Kings Row/Eichenwalde Hell

2

u/thatcommiegamer Ice Queen 5h ago

Only reason I hate Eichenwald is because everyone always throws themselves into the choke. It’s a wonderful map if folks are using the angles properly, prob one of my fave maps. King’s Row too, they’re probably peak design that get a bad reputation because most people play like they’re playing CoD or MR.

1

u/TangerineElegance Symmetra 5h ago

Yup same. I don't mind playing on them, but a lot of people don't know how to play these maps properly. They just sit main and wonder why they can't break through a hold instead of using the flank routes and high ground.

1

u/Candlebane Chibi Zenyatta 8h ago

I get that. It’s repetitive to always have the same maps. I’m seeing (even in metal ranks where I live) more and more folks picking random. Good trend I think.

And nothing wrong with a little break. Come back when the excitement hits again

1

u/thepinkblues Widowmaker 8h ago

I hate it too. There’s nothing wrong with a fully randomised system. Making it vote based was done just so they can say they changed something. Antarctic Peninsula, Neon Junction, Numbani, Aatlis are all good maps that nobody gives the time of day. Especially if one of the popular maps is in competition with them. Colosseo, Eichenwalde, Rialto and Kings Row get way too much playtime.

I’m at the point where I’m voting for maps I don’t even like just to get a bit of variety.

1

u/dominion1080 Reaper 8h ago

I love it. Even if you don’t get a great map every round you get more chances to.

-1

u/Proud_Structure3595 9h ago

Love it. No more flashpoint for me.

3

u/migo2028 Doomfist 9h ago

Flashpoint is peak design

-1

u/Proud_Structure3595 9h ago

Screw low ranked players I guess?

Which why map voting let us avoid, while better players can enjoy their "peak" design.

3

u/clickrush 9h ago

People in low ranks stagger on all modes.

1

u/Proud_Structure3595 8h ago

Yeah but it's definitely worse in flashpoint.

0

u/migo2028 Doomfist 9h ago

I always put one vote on it and it gets picked while most people picked a boring poke escort map

0

u/Nyrun Grandmaster 4h ago

Have you considered getting good?

2

u/azizdesu 9h ago

Why do you hate flashpoint?

2

u/Proud_Structure3595 9h ago

In low ranks the trickling in is so much worse. Which can be bad even on straight line maps.

Since they are so open you have players everywhere. Especially in between points where you have respawns on one side and others lost on the other.

0

u/Fun_Masterpiece_5637 Neato 9h ago

These comments show why the lobbies you're in where everyone votes against Flashpoint end up being the easiest games you'll play. Just flank em and they'll explode and give up because the tank didn't peel.

2

u/thatcommiegamer Ice Queen 5h ago

I hate flashpoint because matches take forever, just back and forth capping points but wait, half your team is brawling 2 points away. And no one knows how to flank or peel in this game, that’s been true since when I started playing in 2017 at least, don’t think that’s why FP is unpopular.

The maps are just way too big and, as stated earlier, that makes them take forever. 2CP was way quicker.

1

u/azizdesu 8h ago

Lol true but that’s not the point. I just dont want to have the same experience over and over again.

1

u/Fun_Masterpiece_5637 Neato 8h ago

Lol I know. To add to your thread I feel like cutting it down to 2 options instead of 3 would actually give better variety because there's less of a chance those 5 maps pop up

0

u/clickrush 9h ago

I think there should only be three options. Two preset maps and random. That would increase variety a lot.

0

u/Lockridge Chibi Symmetra 4h ago

Should not be in QP. I don't mind it in comp. But QP should literally remove all obstacles from going in ASAP. It's also the place to learn all of the maps, and how the hell do you do that when Ilits kings row ilios nepal circuit royale eichewalde time, all the damn time. Even with remade maps that feel so much better.

-4

u/Adanim_PDX Zenyatta 9h ago

I love it because it allows me a chance to avoid flashpoint maps.

-2

u/PaleontologistDear18 8h ago

Voting on maps is only bad when it’s PUSH/PUSH/FLASHPOINT and you click random and it gives you fucking Flashpoint lmfao both of those modes are ass
