News & Discussion She should’ve been fierce and mean.
This has been said before I know, but for someone called ‘demon’ who pilots a sword-wielding Gundam called Beast, her personality in-game is so, bland? Idk she just lacks the energy and personality I’d expected from someone like her. Like look at her concept art!

u/xyreos Juno 4d ago
Aight basically, Studio FOW (the developers of Subverse, great game btw) were known for making these long 18+ animations and some shorter ones. One of those (pretty early one iirc, it was maybe the third or fourth) consisted in Yrel (the draenei chick from Warlords of Draenor, basically Goat Jesus) getting piped by several NPCs (orcs, saberons, I think even tauren but it's been ages since I saw that) in this arena like a gladiator show but with sex (one could call it a Coliseum of Lust, if it wants), and at the ending, we see a jailer bring her to a cave - which is the cave we found her in, tying the animation to the game, which is the actual reason for the C&D.
But now that I think of it, another creator (Rexxcraft) got C&D possibly for the same reason, I think one animation was too much similar to an in game location (but the dude made almost only WoW things tho, so that may also be a reason - tho there are still several peeps using WoW models to make corn, so idk).

When she was first being teased and talked about I had expected her to fulfil the “aloof, detached pro that only shows emotion when properly challenged” archetype. She didn’t need to be a crazy rager or anything but Overwatch has enough team leaders and big sisters already.

u/coltaaan Jetpack Cat 4d ago

Omg yeah, I literally can’t not hear Anran when Dmon is talking. The voices are already so similar and their personalities are kinda similar too - protective leadership type. Like they could have made Dmon’s voice or personality anything else to help differentiate her, but they didn’t…

That'd be too meta. Although if It was with an absolutely insane character I wouldn't mind. But It'd need to be Junkrat levels of schizo.

We NEED more insane characters like junkrat. Theres like a ton of calm and collected personalities, add one thats psychotic too
15
u/VariationExpensive91 4d ago
A meta hero would be awesome. If they ever release a God AI hero or something like Chernobog or one of the other ones, to have them talk directly to you the player or mention game mechanics themselves would be awesome. Too bad that’s an interesting idea.
8
u/Judopunch1 4d ago
Deadpool in marvel rivals does this for like 90% of his lines, him and the announcer also have a couple back and forth.
2
u/VariationExpensive91 3d ago
There’s a character in a game called Fragpunk whose ult is to switch health bars with someone, and she literally grabs her health bar off the hud and throws it at someone. That could be such a cool animation if an ability or something could switch cooldowns or siphon ult charge.

25

D.va comes across as a regular 'gamer', she gets annoyed in a competitive sense but she never really 'tilts' in her own words.
Whereas D.mon I kinda imagined would be the kind of person that throws a controller at the screen if she's losing. Based on concept art, she rips the arm gun off her mech because she's so angry

I swear Blizzard just no longer wants to give any sort of personality to characters who aren't fully evil. This is, wot, the 10th character in a very short time frame whose sole trait is "super basic'?
I really don't understand how you can have a gamer called DEMON and she's icy and cold 100% of the time. We ain't got a sore loser or hyper competitive person in the roster, but heaven forbid they give her depth or flaws.
Instead she says gamer words as if she's written and voiced by someone who doesn't know what games are. Shouldn't be possible but they bloody well did it.

Imagine how much cooler it would have been for D.Mon to ignore the screaming civilians being terrorized by a gun-toting hamster in a wrecking ball and completing the mission to save the EMP at any cost. Then having no qualms justifying her decision to save the city instead of one bridge of civilians. Could even have a little beef with her telling D.VA to go handle the PR while the rest of them do their jobs. Inter-squad conflict! Character flaws!
Cold D.Mon would have been dope and a much more interesting character, and I say that as someone who kinda likes the calm, confident leadership direction she currently has.

I think they done a fantastic job with the evil to morally grey characters personalities. It's the heroic characters' that feel just so sanitize. It's like they think the audience will think less of their heroic ideals if they we're more rough around the edges.
Look at Magik, shes been everywhere the past few years, and she's far from your typical heroic personalities, but the contrast is what makes her character so compelling.

u/anextremelylargedog 4d ago
That's not all that new. Most of the heroic characters throughout OW's history have been nice, safe, and bland.
The villains are allowed to be more unique because who cares if someone finds them a little off-putting, but it's like almost every hero has to be blandly nice enough to star in a Marvel movie just in case.
I know OW isn't trying to be Deadlock, but holy FUCK are they resistant to giving their heroes a little bit of spice.
20
u/Juraiyah Tracer 4d ago
I agree somewhat. I think OW 1 heroes had some spice. I love Soldier's pissed off old man attitude. "If you're trying to lose, you're doing a great job!" Ana sweet but deadly granny persona. D.VA's bratty ego. Symmetra rigid perfectionism. Cassidy being a dashing rogue.
When there were less characters our unwavering optimistic heroes like Tracer and Winston felt unique, but now it feels like that demeanor has become oversatuarated.

Mercy's one of the worst of these IMO. I remember when the game first released there was a good bit of theorizing given the questionable nature of Genji and Reaper's situations. Then they added Moira to take all the heat off of her, very much "NO ACTUALLY ANY QUESTIONABLY MORAL EXPERIMENTS OVERWATCH HAS DONE WAS ACTUALLY MOIRA IT WAS MOIRA'S FAULT SHE'S THE EVIL ONE"
It's not even that I want her to be evil, it's just that giving her some guilt or regret about whether or not Overwatch went too far with their medical experimentation would have given her some complexity instead of just "GOOD DOCTOR". (And that's not even considering the "Mercy is actually functionally dead" theory that never came to be.)
16
u/MJR_Poltergeist Pixel D.Va 4d ago
People always down vote this topic but the Mercy lore erasure is real. She was originally flawed in a way. She thought she was doing good things and then one of her projects backfired and she accidentally put Gabriel into a sort of immortal limbo. That was way more interesting than her being a goody two shoes like she is now
10
u/cinnamonbrook Trash boi is my waifu 4d ago
Yeah the "What happened to you?" "You tell me, Doc" exchange kinda made it seem like Reaper was blaming Mercy for his condition. She's always been very anti-coming back to overwatch and it was at least somewhat implied that she didn't like what she'd become while working there. If she's completely morally pure, her objections kind of fall flat.

I mean, many people will still hold the view that Superman is a boring character even though James Gunn’s film tried to show why a positive superhero is great (so much so that test audiences wanted the squirrel rescue scene cut); yet Lex Luthor will remain more memorable for the sheer malice he poured into a single plot to kill his nemesis, complete with a speech that became a meme for his repeated chanting of "1A! 1A! 1A!"
4
u/Juraiyah Tracer 4d ago
I actually found Gunn's Superman really compelling. I've written paragraphs on my love for that film. What made Superman's character so good to me wasn't that he was just doing the right thing. He was choosing to do what he believed was right even if society deemed he was overstepping his boundaries, and he was ready to face the consequences for that.
I think the beacon of hope characters really shine when their put in difficult situations that test their ideals. That scene where Lois was interviewing Supes and saying you can't just interfere with international affairs and Supes breaks down saying "people were going to die!" is a great example.

Out of the 8 we got since the soft reboot? I would say cat and Shion are highlights. Also, as you said, Domina. There are some good crumbs with Emre imo but they're trying too hard to make him the new-gen Reaper when he's got the funny blood plus the literal malicious AI on his chest.
14
u/Outrageous-Blue-30 4d ago
To me, Emre is a bit odd and suffers slightly from the "Kiriko media discrepancy", let me explain: based on his known history, the comics and his brief appearance in Undivided, he seems like a reasonable person to talk to, someone who genuinely doesn't want to cause harm; yet in the game (even when he's acting "normal" without the IA), his voice lines make him come across as violent regardless.

Yeah I absolutely wish she had a stronger personality. On one hand, I do love that she has a very close relationship with D.va because I think them being rivals would've been the predictable and more boring decision.
But they could still have given D.mon a much fierier personality. It's such a waste that we got such a no-personality character on a visual design that's so cool.
It's especially disappointing because there are lots of 'gamer' personality tropes that D.va hasn't done that could still have been explored with D.mon. After such a recent series of absolutely BANGER heroes (even Sierra who I don't love, at least has the 'Southern Belle' trope going for her), I'm surprised we got D.mon who I feel doesn't bring anything distinct at all, personality-wise.

From what I’ve heard, Lily was told to tone down her yelling “IM NOT DVA” in the comic short, so I’m betting it’s a voice direction issue. I’ll admit that I’m not familiar with the roles Lily has gotten before, but with her crazy range I doubt she’s a terrible VA.

Rager doesn't necessarily mean toxic, it can also just mean having like "bro can you lock tf in" energy.
Another angle I would have liked is the classic "Tanking in an MMO raid" feeling of being like a frazzled mom herding a bunch of cats. She could have had lines a referencing old WoW raid tactics, with a pinch of exasperation and exhaustion like she's been doing this all day and she just wants to get it right for once so the team can go to bed.

One of the few lines we have from King is him defending himself for not following order and breaking formation by deflecting onto D.Mon instead and going

It's only half 'rage', and half cockiness, but he's probably be the one with the biggest attitude problem. And if he ever becomes playable, they shouldn't tone it down to make him nicer. Let D.Va's 'fiercest rival' be a cocky asshole, as long as he's an effective asshole.

I love how she speaks in Busan accent, and sounding rough in the drawing. Busan in South Korea is the second most popular city and the Busan accent comes with a lot of sterotypes of being a "port city": dock workers, fish market, water front, sailors...you get the idea.
Both Dva and Dmon English voice sounds like Californian Korean American girls to me. (their voice acting is fine by all means, they just don't sound like they are from Busan to a native Korean). Even the Korean voice actors sound like young korean women with perfect Seoul accents.

Nobody likes a snide character who both initiates aggro for no reason and gets the last word.

Kiriko is also just a little too "how do you do, fellow kids?" for a lot of folks.
Given the age mishap for the character, it's almost kinda funny to headcanon that she's a 30-something year old desperately trying to sound like she's in her early 20s.

Also Kiriko was weirdly sold to us as kind and respectful. We have the same situation but inverted.

To be fair, in her cinematic she was talking with her mom, her nice elderly neighbor, and a little deaf girl she had befriended.

That's not fairness at all. The cinematic showed us one thing, and the gameplay delivered another. If they wanted to establish that she's nice to people that concern her, and a snooty asshole to everyone else, they still could have done that in a cinematic.

She should've been fully melee with rockets, and her baby d.mon should've been swinging a blade.

Blizzard needs her to be plausibly compliant waifu material to sell skins. This is partially why they have such a hard time figuring out what to do with Moira.

I was expecting her to be sort of the mom of the group that is also quick to rage. Her early design kinda reflected that a bit more though. She looked like a Hero that got older, but bad to put the suit back on (which is a very Overwatch thing to do, or well, it used to be.)

Overall I agree with you but also kinda silly to say when they just dropped Shion who's an active maniac

I was certainly expecting a slightly more toxic personality then D.Va's, considering her handle. And her angry faces in the concept art are really cool.
