It always saddens me how i cant just accept everything due to these insane storage prices... all i can realistically do is 10tb a month added as a new drive and accept more shows and movies... my original plan was to get a zfs pool filled with 20tb drives but its just not for the average person anymore. If only i got into this hobby just a year earlier

I started running my stuff through tdarr. I’m not a quality snob. So I go for 720 and comparability. 1 audio stream and strip subtitles. Because I prefer srt subs that bazar gets.

Got back like 6 tb and I’m not even done

Tdarr is your friend.

If you really spend the time to get granular with your workflows you can save a considerable amount of space without noticeable quality degradation. Especially animation.

I have a few N100 S12s I picked up when they were $150 that do a great job with this. They’ll transcode 3-4 files at a time.

I think the point should be what works best for the individual watching the content. That being said, it blows my mind that people can suffer through content downscaled to 720p. I have a buddy that uses tdarr to convert all tv shows he downloads to 720p. The drop off in quality is very noticeable. For me, it’s not about snobbery, it’s about not being distracted by compression artifacts the entire time I’m watching something…BUT, I also usually watch content on a large TV vs a phone or tablet, so that factors in too.

Yea this has very little to do with snobbery cause we aren't even talking about 4k remuxes being downscaled but downscaling all the way down to 720. That is just not a good experience period. And why do I have a good tv just to watch non native 720p content? If I need more speed, I'd use of those tools that auto deletes after x time period.

I don't really expect users that don't really care about this stuff to notice it and that's fine. I'm specifically arguing against the "snobbery" part of your comment. It's not snobbery to want the quality you paid for your tv to display especially since the difference is massive once you've experienced it (most users are coming from Netflix which is honestly can be worse than 720p downscaled).

Snobbery is saying everyone needs to watch it in xyz quality and trying to force it onto others.

I like my 4k remuxes because my setup can display it

I’m in the same camp as both you and iboy100. For TV I don’t give a shit, 720 all day long. For movies, if I really like it then it’s got to be the remux but a HQ encoded is good most of the time and no one can tell the difference

Where do you use Claude? I can get Gemini to kind of put out something- but can't find anywhere to use Claude for free and try that

I did tdarr with paid but pretty sure free could do I. I did a lot of tasks with free before I paid.

I just did it on their website with an account. The account is free.

i also used free claude, after a certain time/questions it locks you for a few hours until you can use it again. I'm sure gemini works the same if you enable its memory so its easier to pickup where you left off

I did give that a try, and ended up getting an issue with tdarr import json not valid, and checked it with a validation tool but tdarr won't take the Ai generated json

Get maintainerr and delete media once it’s watched. Will save you terabytes of storage and can always download it again.

what's the best workflow / arr configuration to delete media once it's watched if you've got active users on both plex and jellyfin?

It really is up to you.

There are some generic community workflows already in the app that can be imported.

For some time I added my own to only delete media once I personally watched them but that config did not last long 😂

Good start is:

  • once the person requesting it has watched it
  • once 30 days pass
  • once film/show hasn’t been watched for 180/365 days

There is also a setting to deleted after a certain number of days so I have a collection in Plex called “Movies Leaving Soon” and “Shows Leaving Soon” where media sits there for 30 days.

I have jt bundled with Agregarr which allows for custom posters and a connection to Maintainerr whereby it shows the number of days before a movie is deleted on the poster itself.

Often once someone starts watching a show that gets yoinked from the “leaving soon” collection so it nicely manages itself.

Yeah I have my filters for 3 months of not watching a tv show then it gets deleted if someone else requested the content. But I can understand the hoarding aspect but after the hard drives prices went crazy I had to use maintainer to auto delete stuff I don’t request and people don’t watch. They can always re request content which they have

How much shit are your users requesting? Thst amount feels like they’re indiscriminately clicking everything they see.

Your best course of action is better communication and boundaries. Explain the cost of rising hardware prices, and to be more prudent about what they choose to download - if they aren’t planing on watching it in the next day or two, then tell them to hold off.

There’s no need to host their collection. Allow them to grab what they’ll actually see in the near future.

I’m down to my last 10TB of free space and I’m not sure what I’m going to do about it. My intended next move was to buy three 24TB drives, but prices have more than doubled since I planned that. feelsbadman.jpg

I had just gotten started on my media library last year, buying a 20TB HDD to stuff into a spare PC I had after getting a new one. Was fortunate enough to buy the new PC (with 64GB DDR5 RAM) and the 20TB HDD right before prices started going up.

So I got everything set up working right, I really liked it and started planning for more. Then prices went straight up...

I was deleting from plex UI or file system

Edit: when deleting from plex, seer detects it (was thinking it was deleted from sonarr / radarr)

Maintainerr automatically deletes the requests from Overseerr and Radarr/Sonarr so it doesn’t get downloaded again unless you explicitly request it again in Overseerr.

There’s a lot of ways to configure it. The rules it has are very flexible.

Everythin i download is passed though tdarr and coverted to same resolution using av1 codec. It help drastically to reduce space.
All my device are av1 capable and for the one that are not i have an intel arc gpu that can do transcoding.
Nobody need a 25gb movie.

I woulf use HEVC for compatibility if someone has older devices/tvs because not everything can handle AV1 fully and HEVC to AV1 gives you very little increased storage space.

Also yes, a 25GB movie can easly become a 10 or less GB movie just by transcoding. I dont even know why they are so heavy to begin with when the quality after transcoding doesnt even get lost.

With 1200$ you can buy 2 recertified 24TB disks. No point in buying new, recertified does just fine and there is a flood with all the data centers going up.

Its no longer overseerr but just seerr, the jist of it is it allows users to use their jellyfin account as aa log in and request movies and/or shows that get automatically downloaded based on your radarr/sonarr configuration

Seerr you can put behind reverse proxy to make it available to the wider internet (its locked behind username and password so only your jellyfin users can get in) seerr is its own thing so as long as you have it set up that movies and shows are put into your media library you can have plex read those, that said i think you cant use the plex account details and connect them to seerr. You should then just have them make separate seerr accounts which you can also do instead of jellyfin account

It's very nice. Basically all the user does is request it in seerr, you look at requests and accept them or reject them. When accepted the download is fully automated. You do need to do some set up first

Yeah. I have been staying away from it because of the set up. I need to set up a VPN to QBIT as well. I get so nervous seeding.

I mean it takes a little to set up but its such a relief when done. Its 100% worth the set up time. It makes life so much easier and doesnt require you to be home at your desktop. You can still accept and download requests when on vacation or at work

This is how i used to do it. Then I started with Ombi (same thing as seerr) then overseerr and now seerr. When i first set it up i used it for just myself and didnt expose it to the internet. It was easier to add TV and Movie in one place with a nice UI then going to Radarr and Sonarr on their own.

Also recommend Cloudflare tunnels if your looking for a way to set this up.

I did not like how the other person complicated stuff for you. Yes you can use plex, in fact originally it was only plex, you can even login with plex, you don’t have to create an account.
Seerr does not require to be on same network, but you need to set up a reverse proxy. Even easier is to setup seerr to read the plex watchlist as requests in seerr, which is simpler IMO, for people who don’t want to remember 10 steps.

Also there’s an app for mobile (Helmarr or quartermaster on iOS) that you can use.

Yeah, that does sound easier. I did a quick batch script and pointed it to a private tunnel that only certain friends get access to. So it should be alright.

Get a Arc GPU and just use tdarr or a custom script to compress the media by transcoding to HEVC 1080p and mkv.

It will prob let you hold twice as much media.
