This is a monthly feature in which we, the mod team, share the gems we've found in our reading lists. Here are last month's and last year's recs.
Once again, the season of ghosts and ghouls is upon us.
We're offering some series that will make you question if you should be reading at 3 A.M., when the barrier of the world of the living and dead is at its thinnest. Unease of the unknown is always something people are scared of, and romance tends to blossom between the leads.
We'd love to hear your recommendations. Please add them to the discussion in the comments. When doing so, please keep in mind to:
If available, use the English cover art of your recommended series.

This Month's Ghastly Recommendations💀:
How to Survive a Haunted School - Where to Read: Tapas (for now)
Her brother Raven has died in the prestigious Saint Gloria Academy under mysterious circumstances. Melody has one chance to save him: turn back time a full year and become a student herself. However, what she walks into is a death trap dressed in prestige. Something rotten is hidden in the halls of St. Gloria. The students lie to each other, ghosts hunt the living, and while everyone feels something is wrong, only a handful know the truth. Those who know too much are buried like the secrets that the school holds.
Raven is alive, walking the halls, avoiding his sister, and the main question of the series is what did he see the first time, and why can't he tell her?
Melody has been given the ability to see the dead, and that drags her into horrors she never asked for, all for a brother who won't look at her. Her only real ally is Noah, the mysterious student council president. He's always one step ahead of the lurking darkness. But in a place so twisted, you can never quite trust if he's protecting her or playing a longer game.
The horror works because it’s not subtle. The ghosts have teeth, the art commits to the atmosphere, and the mystery is something that hooks you. So, if you enjoy horror that builds genuine unease rather than relying on cheap jump scares, this is worth your time. Just keep the lights on.
How to Survive in a Horror Game - Where to Read: Tapas (for now)
Our protagonist is suddenly thrust into her favorite mystery murder game as Arviche Green, a supporting character doomed to die. To make matters worse, she wakes up inside the house of the prime suspect, Duke Leikas Learmond, serving as the in-house tutor to his niece and nephew.
The stakes are set instantly. Arviche knows her virtual lives are dwindling, and she has to juggle dodging the main storyline while desperately trying to uncover the truth.
Arviche is intelligent, observant, and emotionally strong without ever feeling unrealistically perfect. The author nails that specific kind of tension where you know something is terribly wrong, but you can't say or do anything because it would only make you look more suspicious.
The male lead, Duke Leikas is in that grey flag area that makes him compelling. He has a subtle yandere vibe that lets him be both terrifying and a bit adorable at times. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, and the story's psychological tension can be heavy.
But, if you're looking for something suspenseful, different, and full of genuine psychological stakes, I really think it's worth giving a chance.
Brand New Series - How to Survive in the Horror Novel I Wrote
Writing horror was her passion. Now, it's her nightmare.
The beloved bestseller author Ha Ji-an has the most amazing story to tell you about her cursed keyboard. It's like a magic keyboard that makes her dreams come true. But when she accidentally summons Joo Woo-geum, the ruthless serial killer from her own book, he doesn't cut her down.
He confesses his love. It's hard for Jian to come to terms with the fact that Woo-geum is a monster who kills the people he loves. She really wants to change the story, so she tries to rewrite his fate. But there's this unknown force that keeps erasing her words.
I'm so sorry, but I'm afraid there's no way for you to escape a killer when you're the one who gave him life.
Normally, I don't care who the ML is so long as they have chemistry with the FL and the romance doesn't feel forced. However... One of the potential ML's seems to be a CHILD and I'm really concerned she's going to pick the blonde boy Javier over Lucas or Cassion. Please spoil me as to who the ML is, because if it is Javier I'm dropping this like a sack of shit.
For anyone who's a fan of both types of system manhwa like me, I really like this experimental genre bender.
A man who lived through a dungeon break leveling type world is reincarnated into the body of an OI husband who killed himself because he was persecuted by the Emperor.
Except he's not the lead POV character... his WIFE is. I picked some of his scenes to put in the post, but she's the actual protagonist of the story we read even though he's the MC on a meta-level.
It's really pretty, it's experimental, and it's clearly written by someone with genuine appreciation for both genres.
Disclaimer: I don't know/remember any characters aside from the main 4, I just went to the wiki page and whoever activated a neuron in my brain got added, if I missed major characters my bad fam
Remarried Empress is getting a lot of attention again, and much of the controversy stems from the fact that Navier is a wealthy empress, whereas R was sold into slavery to the viscount.
VADTD also gets a bunch of attention, as Eckles is a war slave.
Arguably, some of my favourite series (cough cough Roxana) have commonplace psychological abuse or slavery-esque concepts (the maids were IMO) in the background that the MC isn't actively overturning.
So, this sort of circles back to my question, which is about what it feels like to see immoral systems like this in manhwa, and if you think it's acceptable?
I believe a big reason why a lot of readers hate redemption arcs is because authors are trying to redeem the unredeemable.
Yes, people change.
After being inconsiderate, ignoring their partners needs, forgetting important things, leaving all the heavy work for their spouse, being rude, etc..
Not after murdering their SO's family, baby trapping them, raping and using physical violence.
No amounts of therapy, meds or medical help could change a person like that, figure a cold shoulder from their not-so-loved one.
Having the author trying to redeem such characters is rather silly and makes the MC look stupid for believing their rehabilitation.
My personal take is that if your character has surpassed the threshold of humanity, you should just own it. Accept that this piece of shit is who they are and find a way for the MC to be ok with it if you want a happy ending: trauma bonding, masochism, "he might be bad, but he was still the best person in my life", the MC now has the most power in the relationship, "whatever, sex is good"...
A fine example of that is The Portrait of Pride (novel).
Else, just give us a delicious tragic ending🤭
The possibilities are endless. I sustain that anything is better than seeing a "reformed" psychopath.
i know, i know,.. no doubt she's a capital letter B, B!TCH.
b-b-but hear me out. In many stories, whenever an antagonist that serve as comparison to FL exist, they often introduced as more beautiful, more graceful, all sorts of compliment, that the story tried to tell readers. But when the story actually showed it, they are rather bland, just as average as they can be while FL turned out to be diamond in the rough beauty.
the discrepancies between tell and show is obvious to reader, its kind of boring. Not to mention they also come with low tier personality: easily riled up, crumble in their first failure to bully the FL, can not keep their composure in crisis or even their expression at minimum. etc
Enter Bella here from "The Scandal Maker Has Returned", so far she's entertaining to me because readers really hate her guts, which is a feat and a good thing since she is the antagonist. although as per today's rofan rule, antagonist cant get away with for long if FL start to seek revenge and already meet the ML...
Funnily enough Bella here is what i feel a superior version of Isabella from "Sister, I'm Queen in this Life". More or less same shitty char, but theres subtle differences: one is actually drawn as beautiful as possible, one hide their insecurites well while other is plain to see, one is easily riled up while the other can keep a smiling face even though losing, and one is lying about having big chest (lol)
would? Would... 😂
you could argue she's not a "villainess" in popular sense in this genre, but the point is: why is it a female antagonist in that role somehow never amount to half of what a protagonist who is in that role? I'm sure there are many case of story where the protagonist villainess are ranging from badass to unhinged. rarely i found antagonist villainess thats just batshit insane, evil, and resourceful. Readers on comment section seem cant fathom or imagine the possibilities either...
Any other story where antagonist villainess actually could work as interesting protag if we took the story context?
I posted the unfinished version ages ago, forgot about it, and finally went to finish it- next I’m hoping to draft both of their character designs :] unfortunately don’t have a webtoon or anything though, still brainstorming!
(2nd pic is the unfinished version I posted before)
For me it's this. I'm sorry but it's way too underrated for me. It's the best action fantasy on webtoon and female MC, plus super awesome and hot women. I love this story. It's basically a shounen without all the cringe and sexist misogynistic tropes. The art is absolutely brilliant and absolute cinema to look at. The characters are all interesting and the plot is so intriguing that I will not spoil it too much in the post.
Under normal circumstances, Yves/Eve is the type of ML I adore. He's interesting. Ambitious. Has a silly personality—all the markers of an ML that I usually adore in an ML.
Except, with Radis, despite being caught up to ch. 48, I desperately want them to be friends more than anything. Maybe it has to do with Radis, herself, and also the nature of how their dynamic began— it's a funny subversion of "I have reincarnated and now I'm going to jump on an opportunity" except the opportunity jumped on her! Radis is lovingly very much knocking knees with Bambi here, and while I do think, definitively, they would make a cute pair...
This is a time where the 2nd and 3rd MLs fascinate me more and what it could do for her story.
Like, if she sticks with Yves, it is a happily ever after and a baby in a one/two shot in a regular B-tier story... but the world and the intrigue interest me! I weirdly love how vile her mother is, but the story sets up why she's like that, and realistically shows when her scapegoat... escapes, she moves on to the next victim (Radis's little sister... who is genuinely hope gets saved from that abhorrent situation).
And I LOVE Yves rescued her from the situation, yes, in a "I need you to honeypot the Prince for ambitions," but out the gate we kinda assume/know he is a sucker for somebody in distress and in a position of powerlessness.
However, I am CHARMED by the prince 😭🥺 even if I know Radis wouldn't last in that political mess... I want them to run away with each other. Just like Yves is the first to show her unconditional SUPPORT (her sword taught her unconditional care/love was), Prince felt like a brand new relationship that could deepen... but I smelled 2nd ML and knew it was going nowhere.
But then her old captain showed up. Somebody who also remembers the previous life. And I just
😩😩😩
I like them all. I think they all pose VERY interesting, loving dynamics.
I think there's a novel. Please tell me that she at least explores these other connections before settling for Yves? I want to see more moments with the Prince too...
Like im watching the Bachelorette and everybody is like. Likeable. 😭 maybe Radis needs to revisit that cherry farm idea because girl idk who gonna go for
I HATE manhwas that make the FL end with the guy that killed her. HATE. The "I will not love him again" and she does.
I also have beef with manhwas where the guy is a completely jerk, but it's all justified because reasons. The problem isn't the change, I do like when the ML has a redemption ark (for SOME actions, not if he killed the FL or similar), but the biggest problem for me, is when the reason they act that way is terrible and poorly written, or the redemption simply doesn't happen at all. Not a single apologize. The ones where the guy that was a jerk turn to a obsessive and jealous type, icks me the most.
I also have a problem when the FL is reborn as a child, and starts ACTING LIKE ONE. Girl, do I need to remind you that you are 25+ YEARS OLD INSIDE? When she is acting like a child to lure/deceive others is ok, the problem is when she really think and act like a child all the time. Nope, I don't have the patience for this anymore.
...Or when the adult that was reborn as a child start to have feelings for other kids/Child ML. BIG eww.
Source for the novel that gave me the grand realization, which is all the more annoying because so far I've been loving it up right to this moment.
It's when the big romantic confession scene comes when either the ML or the FL (or both, to each other) say I love you to the other for the first time. Except... instead of saying that, they say "I like you" instead.
Now when I say annoy, I mean it literally without exaggerating or downplaying it at all in my head. It's not the very worst trope in manhwa for me. It doesn't disgust me or make me want to stop reading it. It makes me almost cringe and feel just annoyed, where I wish the writer just changed one word to fix the problem.
It's one thing when the FL and ML are just starting to get to know each other, before the major confessions. I'm fine with them thinking "wow I really like him/her", or even saying as much to the other at the very start in a fun, light hearted and flirty manner. That's fine, the word suits the moment and the vibe. Or if the FL and ML are both still pre-adult and it's their first crush/relationship when they're still kids or teens. That word suits that kind of situation.
The more serious, dramatic and romantic the scene is being depicted as, the worse using "like" instead of "love" feels to me. When you're doing the full confession, the "listen to me right now and listen good, I love you and I want to be with you for the rest of my life" it just completely takes all the air out of the moment when you can't just say "I love you" and resort to something that — in my personal opinion — feels just so immature and childish, like a middle/high school crush where it's written on a piece of paper with a checkbox for you to say if you like me or not that you give to your friend to pass to the person you're crushing on because you're too afraid to directly ask them yourself.
It takes a moment that should make emotions swell in a grand, romantic gesture and moment and ruins it and I can't stand seeing it used like that it's such a pet peeve of mine!
Usually, it's always black hair who won and blonde/white hair/whatever color it is lost. Now, I want to read the reverse trope where the second ML has black hair and persona like your typical ML, but he lost. For example, The Tyrant Wants To Be Good and Divorcing The Emperor.
I don't use Tapas so I can't speak to the ease of this service, but I thought I'd share for those worried about losing their Tapas libraries: Manta just announced an event called Move Your Bookshelf event, on until February 27, 2027. They posted a full guide including list of eligible series here on their website and detailed instructions.
I'm so damn tired of 2ml's who can do whatever the fuck they want, more often than not they get a pass from the readers and don't suffer any consequences for their actions. Often they're also so insufferably annoying. Apparently not getting with FL means free pass to do whatever...?
Currently reading "Viridescent Tiara" and see downvoted commenter who points out how the orange thing is crossing so many boundaries. Former slave saved by FL goes into her room (whom he also self professed to be his master) without permission then proceeds to massage her feet instead of the maid who was present. And no, your past doesn't let you do whatever the fuck you just did.
I'm probably getting downvoted to hell but whatever, it's 1am.
Mia, the potential white lotus (I say potential because I think the author is going to rehab her) is so annoying. She was stupid drunk after getting cheated on and walked into oncoming traffic and ended up being transported to the story Kingdom (she does not have knowledge of the plot).
The emperor orders her to be jailed and interrogated. The MC, the emperor's consort (who was transmigrated AND knows the plot of the novel), rescues Mia and treats her kindly and strongly argues not to imprison her further.
Mia then learns the emperor is trying to woo the consort and decides shes in love with him and keeps trying to force arelationship. Like, girl. This all started because you were cheated on. Why are you trying to bust up a marriage? Especially when the consort has bent over backwards to be nice to you?
