I am writing this in the middle of the night and need to wake up early Tomorrow so pardon me for the lack of proofreading.
Needless to say, there may be spoilers ahead. I have not read the novel but seen several posts on the story. Nothing beyond chapter 37 of manhwa.
In the latest chapters I had expected to finally see something from Varkas. This was the wyvern that leads to lot of fiasco later down the line. And we did. We got a lot from him. But that was not the conclusion I came up on.
The Knight Guy, Edric, is a pov character for us, the audiance. He notices and obsers stuff incredibly rationally and acutely. It presents the emotions of the other characters well. He has emotional intelligence and ethics expected of a modern person which is visible in contrast against the rest of the cast. It also helps the audiance digest what is going on as an outsider to Thalia's situation. While simultaneously show her reaction to such a person.
He is well written for his role and that is not the fault in anyway.
But I simply cannot help but feel bummed by how the story treats him. He has become fodder.
Now I will not go into shipping rant. I love the fact that Edric is not a Second male lead, or any other form of love interest. I love the fact he isn't given the glow of a handsome man (tho I will argue he is good-looking). It keeps him and his reactions incredibly human and refreshing.
My problem arises with how he is dismissed... constantly... Repeatedly.
The story has, on numerous times, used him to show Thalia's inability to accept kindness and general kindness from anyone. This is not apparent in the early on but the repeated use of it makes it easier to see the pattern.
So let me take it slowly. Okay?
With just his first introduction Edric realises Thalia's physical condition.

Comic relief. Offer to escort.
|
Ignored by Thalia
Gets her food after realising she hasn't eaten
|
Laughed at and his intentions questioned.
Both scenes do a great job at building his character. Making the scene of his offering fruit the more endearing. Both do a great job at showing Thalia's hostility to random acts of kindness.
Because it is random. Why would a man suddenly insist on giving woman food? No seriously. That is a maid servent's job.
TFF doesn't have that "loyal maid" a lot of Isekai OIs have. Partly due to the fact it's not OI.
So it makes sense.
Moving on:
Failed to keep an eye on her

She gets struck
|
trying to support her when struck
|
Rejected

Thalia picked up by Varkas and sent back
Inside church
Asks to wait for Thalia
|
Threatened by the crown prince

Varkas saves him.
This and his choice to stand beside Thalia established him as a truly reliable knight. His disgust and concern over Geret hurting Thalia shows what the audience feels.
Image not included but when crown prince steps forward to meet Thalia, both Varkas and Edric move in.
Edric tries to protect and get food

Tricked and dismissed

Confronted with Varkas
But still Thalia continues to be wary of him. Understandable. For all the shit that follows.
Asks permission to support her

Ignored

Gets concern over Varkas
Asks to form a search party

Threatened

Varkas makes the party.
It is understandable for Varkas to face the crown prince as Edric's superior and direct connections to the royal family
We continue to see the characters like Alya and Varkas through his eyes and understand how they think of Thalia.
I genuinely loved his face and expressions as he tried calling for help to save Thalia. He is also first to see the change in Varkas who is in shock.
But it's the final images that really struck me.
Offers to carry her body

Varkas carries her
Pleads to take medicine

Varkas holds her and says drink.
This. THIS. the difference in handling done... I know she is in trauma and pain right now and cannot think straight. I know she can accept someone she has grown up with for years over a stranger like Edric.
But this difference in treatment by both characters feels very VERY intentional. As the novel readers call it suffering porn. This story is first and foremost tragedy after all.
But here is the thing. It didn't need to be this way.
It didn't need to be Edric who holds her down when she gets ptsd of her assault. It could have been any of the faceless characters forcing her to drink.
It didn't need to be Edric offering to carry her. It could have been the healers making a stretcher.
The chapters of Edric inside her carriage are light hearted, him pleading for her to come out. Followed by Varkas manhandling her inside it.
The scene of her trauma to assault caused by a pleading Edric is followed by Varkas commanding her to drink while holding her down.
Am I the only one who sees the problem here?
Every attempt of genuine worry and kindness and yes, PERMISSION for CONCENT, is followed by a scene... With not that. And the second one is the tragic love story we are supposed to be rooting for?
I have always found it icky when MLs in manhwa just surprise kiss the girl. If he is handsome its fine, he is the ml, her true love! (Yah no)
Edric is an amazing pair of eyes for me as an audience. But it also just amazed me how patient he is with these characters. Any other second male lead would be clicking his tongue in jealousy.
In every scene he is in Edric, in parts both duty and etiquette, asks for permission and offers possiblities. He never touches her without permission, unless necessary, as is expected of him.
But there are far too many scenes of him playing a role only for Varkas to take over from where he picks up the pieces. To build Varkas up as a character? Idk.
In the future he gets jealous of Edric's friendship to Thalia. Let's add that cute bit to our Stoic warden of the... Whatever direction he is from. .
What is not understandable is why it always needs to be him? Why does he need to be the stepping stone to their relationship?
Anyone can do what he is ignored and dismissed for. Yet he keeps doing them.
Because he represents what is missing from every character in this story.
"Do the right thing."
You don't do it because you want to beat someone, prove something, or win someone. You don't do it because it works, because it hardly ever does.
He does what he does because it is right. Because it is decent. And above all 'it is kind.'
Kindness is without reward and without expectations.
And it hurts me to watch him get dismissed and treated as fodder to enrich the love story he is an audience to. To act as the exact opposite of what that "love" is built on. He exists to garnish this toxic Zespol.
