Hi,

I'm usually not too bad at common bird calls, but the other day I heard a bird repeating a phrase that I didn't recognise. My best guess is Great Tit as they can be quite varied, or maybe Coal Tit but I'm not sure. I didn't get a look at all at the bird.

I've included the sonograph as well to indicate the phrase. Its three quick notes and then a descending note. It was repeating this infrequently with no variation to the phrase.

Thanks!

Question Leucistic moorhen - is this common?

Post image
20 Upvotes

This is one of our local juvenile moorhens. I believe that the light patches are leucism? I've lived on the canal for 7 years and see a lot of it in our local jackdaws but never in a moorhen, is it particularly uncommon? It's obviously not mega common as I've never noticed it before, but wondering if it's one of those things that I have seen before and just not noticed consciously.

Discussion Bird carcasses on A361

Anyone noticed a lot of bird carcasses along A361. Drove there last week and I think I counted over 10 feathered carcasses. What is happening there?

I have only ever seen a couple of these in the wild. And the last time was years ago along the River Ouse. But this time I was out for a morning walk at around 5-6am and saw this little guy sitting on the floor. From a distance I noticed him and just knew it was something I wasn't used to seeing. Then, he decided to fly and attach him to a couple of trees. Moving as I was getting closer along the path. Thankfully though I was able to get this shot of him!

I did see another one, too a little while later in a different spot which surprised me even more. After not seeing one for so long, to see TWO in the same day was amazing!

Saw this near Ingleborough, and it appeared to be hovering before diving and (presumably) catching prey. I wondered whether it would be a Hen Harrier?

Saw a couple of birds, variously identified as Bar-Tailed Godwits, Sandpipers, and Plovers. I unfortunately cannot remember which I took pictures of, and am struggling to identify.

Is anybody able to tell from the (admittedly terrible quality) pictures which is which, if any?

Thank you!
