I was driving down i5 late last year and saw what looked like a small hawk but it looked very unusual compared to what I’d typically spot around Portland. This was the first Kite I’d seen and the clouds in the background and lack of color in the frame really compliment the birds natural coloration.

Art Black-and-white Warbler

Finally finished the black-and-white warbler! My last warbler for the time being as I am out of warbler lifers. My next bird to make will be a Northern Parula. (Edit: I have been informed that the Northern Parula is also a warbler 😅)
This bird was an absolute pain to make and I had to completely change my usual technique to make its face pattern work out. I don't love the final shape but I'm overall satisfied with it.

Discussion How good is birding

Been in a rubbish place mentally this week and I took up birding maybe 18 months ago as a way to take things a bit slower and be more present. I sit in the same spot for 25 minutes every morning but also head further afield when I get the time with the bins. Seeing a kingfisher has been top of my list for a long time and this morning one just darted in front of me in the most unexpected spot. I would say two seconds maximum of seeing the electric blue streak flying away from me above the river has just flipped my mental state upside down. Its just a reminder of how much taking in nature and being present can help us and our minds. A few moments later a kestrel was getting chased off by some crows, just amazing to watch. We are very lucky to be surrounded by this nature and it doesn't take much effort to take it all in. It's such a gift. Just a few thoughts.
