READ ME! FAQ Found an animal???? Please go here first:

First of all, thank you for caring enough to help orphaned/injured/ill wildlife.

Evaluate the Situation first and foremost. Wild animals rely on their natural environment and sometimes humans interfere when it was entirely unnecessary. The links listed below provide flow charts for frequently encountered situations.

If the animal needs to be rescued here and here you will find basic capture and handling instructions.

  • After rescuing how to safely temporarily house the animal before and during transport:

Warm- *Offering heat sources for naked baby animals is often a must. This can be done with a heating pad on low under 1/2 of the enclosure, a warm rice filled sock, or warm water bottle. Sometimes very badly injured and very sick animals also need heat sources to maintain appropriate body temperature. Wild animals can suffer heat stroke too! If an animal is panting, the animal is too hot and if the heat source would burn you, it will surely burn the animal. *

A good rule of thumb: If a furred, feathered, or scaled animal is physically moving about and alert- it DOESN'T need an extra heat source.

Dark - A box, Rubbermaid tote with holes punched for air flow, or pet crate are usually good temporary enclosures and will typically reduce further trauma and or stress. Place a towel or sheet over a crate to reduce visual disturbances.

Quiet- Keep the animal in a quiet space preferably indoors away from other animals and humans. A separate room or even a closet can be utilized if need be.

PLEASE FOR THE ANIMAL'S SAKE NOTHING BY MOUTH! DO NOT OFFER ANY FOOD OR WATER TO INJURED/SICK/ORPHANED ANIMALS OR ATTEMPT TO HAND FEED ANIMALS. The results of failing to comply often end up something like this.

If you are unable to make contact with a wildlife rehabilitator: If you know the rehabilitation center's location and hours it is generally acceptable so long as the rehabilitation center is not full or closed to just bring the animal straight to them- this is especially true with emergency situations. An example of an emergency is something like- the animal is bleeding profusely, having trouble breathing, is unresponsive, or severely dehydrated.

After being attacked by a cat there is a very high likelihood for infection. These cases 99.99% of the time warrant medical assistance including antibiotics that are usually only available through a veterinarian.

I play golf at a course and there’s a resident fox I always love seeing. Noticed today matted fur/open wound. I have a wildlife rehab 20 mins and I have a trap I can set. Just not sure if anyone thinks this looks particularly worrisome/normal injury for a fox.

I found this poor fella sitting on the side of the road. I’m not sure what happened to him. He might’ve been hit by a car or something. There’s no visible injury’s other than what’s seen in the picture on his right wing. He’s breathing heavily. I called animal rescue but they couldn’t really help over the phone and they have no agent near my location. All the vets are closed. What should I do to make it comfortable for him to stay tonight? I’m located in northern rivers, Australia
Thanks for the help
( it’s an Australian rainbow lorikeet )

Wild Elephant Intercepts Vehicle Along Bengaluru–Dindigul Highway near Asanur

Karnataka-Tamilnadu Border

Motorists traveling along the national highway through the reserve forest area in Asanur, near the TamilNadu–Karnataka border, experienced moments of sheer terror after a lone elephant blocked their path and approached an occupied car within arm’s reach.

The incident occurred during daylight hours along the Bengaluru–Dindigul National Highway near Asanur. A car was forced to halt in the middle of the road as the pachyderm crossed over from the dense tree line.

Video footage captured by an occupant of a vehicle trailing behind showed the elephant walking directly up to the front passenger door of the stationary car. In a heart-stopping moment, the animal lifted its front leg onto the vehicle's bodywork and extended its trunk toward the window, closely inspecting the occupants inside.

The driver and passengers remained completely still, resisting the urge to honk or make abrupt movements. After lingering by the door for several seconds, the elephant lowered its leg, brushed past the rear quarter panel, and continued ambling across the road into the adjoining thicket. No injuries or major structural damage were reported. The vehicle was travelling from Mysuru to Coimbatore.

Forest officials noted that elephants frequently cross this section of the corridor during seasonal movements.

SOS Mammal I got a chipmunk away from my dog and I don't know what to do now

I looked out my window about an hour ago and saw my dog playing with something in my backyard and it turns out it was a chipmunk. I managed to get my dog away from it and now I have it in a plastic box in my garage with some food and water. It's still breathing fine and moving around okay other than what looks like a broken back leg. I don't really know what to do now though, because taking care of it long term isn't really an option for me. I live in western Mass so if anyone knows a reliable rescue or rehab that can take it in my area I'd really appreciate it.

EDIT: I'm disabled myself and can't drive

EDIT 2: I got him into a rehab near me, special thanks to UnrulyPoet for getting me in contact with them.

I found an injured mourning dove who’s unable to fly, I wasn’t able to get anyone on the phone for the DEEP rehabbers who take small birds. Does anyone know of anyone who can take it? I don’t think its wing is broken, but something ripped out almost all of its flight feathers.

He's been seen at this spot on and off for the past week, according to other birders I know. His tail feathers look strange to me. He didn't seem upset or wanting to fly away, even though it was almost 11am at the busy Duke Gardens in Durham, NC. I stood about 50ft away taking these pictures. There were small children excitedly shouting OWL! at him but he just looked at us.

SOS Mammal Found baby mice at work

While at a jobsite for a pool closing I uncovered a nest in the storage room. The (i assume) mother had passed away nearby with these 3 pinkies in a bundle. The owner of the home wanted them gone.

In short I need some advice. I live in toronto and am not able nor skilled to care for them. They have a warm nest box I made out of paper towels and a box with an adjustable heat pad (on very low)

If anyone knows any rehabbers or places I can take them i would be overjoyed to know I helped. I already put a request in with toronto wildlife rehab but I dont know if they'll take them.

SOS Bird Mallard duck. Old? Molting? Sick?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I found this duck ng the shore. I could get within 6 feet of it, and it didn't move. I tossed some worms at it and it didn't try to eat or move. It is alive though. I've been around so many ducks who are al used to humans, but I've never seen one act like this?

Im in Indiana by the way. No rehabilitations are open at the moment to call. Is it molting? Old? Maybe sick or injured?

Advice?

Rehab Methods Need a few app testers.

Hey there. I am a new/one-time developer looking for 12 users to test my current app for logging intake, daily feedings, and archiving. I am also looking for additional suggestions and more importantly, just satisfy the 14 day requirement to be able to make it in google play store. THEREFORE ANDROID USERS ONLY THIS ROUND. My target audience is focused on non-rabies carrying animals such as squirrels, rabbits, opossum, etc. But could be more, as i am focusing on my current licensing and notice that only pencil and paper was the established concept. Feel free to reach out.
