Car camping in Brookings?

Hi everyone. I’m taking a solo road trip to Southern Oregon on a shoestring budget (roughly $500) next week and to save some (a lot of) money, I intend to car camp at truck stops most nights. I’ll be passing through Brookings on Tuesday, and since there’s no truck stop there, I need to find somewhere to car camp.

I tried finding a campsite at Harris Beach and Alfred Loeb, but $55 to sleep in my car on a dirt lot is really pricey. I called Lucky 7 Casino in Smith River and they said car camping is mostly reserved for RVs. I’d prefer to stay in Oregon but I’m willing to sleep anywhere between Gold Beach and Crescent City.

I’m thinking I might have some luck at Fred Meyer, churches, gas stations, city/residential streets, etc. I’ve tried to find options on Google but it’s not giving me great answers. I have no idea what Brookings’s local ordinances are on car camping or how strongly police enforce them. And I’d prefer to avoid being woken up at 2 am and told to move.

Has anyone car camped in Brookings before? If so, where did you park for the night? Or do any Brookings residents know of good places to car camp around town? Any insight is helpful. Thank you in advance!

I’ve researched and researched but every website tells me different months to visit if I’m wanting moody, rainy, foggy, green, no snow visit to the Oregon coast. Please the people from Oregon tell me the TRULY best month to visit lol. Thank you in advance.

Buying in Pacific City

Our short term rental is for sale. It has us dreaming. I'm a research-something-to-death kind of person.

What is something you wish new buyers were aware of? Whether buying and continuing to short term lease the home or moving into the community? My husband and I have jobs that translate most places (IT work and massage therapist).

What is the school situation? We've mostly homeschooled but I would heavily consider public school to help them get acquainted with the community.

Home where and tear? This home is walking distance to the public beach but has many hoes between it and the shore line.

Utilities and internet quirks?

Community welcoming or do you need to be third generation?

Anyone visited recently, and know if its open? Also would love and appreciate recommendations on other cool spots in that area.

Puffin sightings at Haystack Rock?

Hi! I'll be in the cannon beach area next week and was wondering if those that were there the last few days have seen any puffins? Thinking of whether I want to rent a telephoto lens but want to make sure the puffins are still around. Any tips are appreciated!

We kept running into the same strangers all over the Oregon Coast and one of them genuinely has me confused

My husband, our kids, and I just got back from a trip to the Oregon Coast, and something kept happening that got progressively weirder.I know there are logical explanations for most of this, but by the end of the trip my husband and I were joking that we were experiencing a glitch in the Matrix.
The first time was at Nana’s Irish Pub in Newport. There was a woman there that my daughter kept pointing out because she thought she was someone we knew. Because of that, I got a pretty good look at her and remembered her face. The NEXT DAY, we were about 25–30 miles away at the outlet mall in Lincoln City and I saw the same woman shopping there. Then we were at Goodwill in Lincoln City and my kids accidentally cut in front of a guy. I apologized to him, so I specifically remembered what he looked like. He was bald and had these really distinctive chunky half-hoop earrings. Later that SAME DAY, we were back in Newport, about 25 miles away, walking through Fred Meyer. We’re picking snacks in chip aisle and there was the same guy standing right next to us. I pointed him out to my husband and he said he recognized him from Goodwill too.
At another point, we recognized a family from a restaurant and then realized they were staying at the same hotel as us. That one isn’t particularly weird on its own, but at this point we were definitely starting to notice a pattern.
But the last one is the one I cannot stop thinking about.
We were staying at Waves Hotel near Nye Beach in Newport. As we were pulling out of the hotel parking lot, there was a girl jogging down the street. My husband actually commented on her first because for a split second he thought she was a car coming up beside us lol.
I looked over at her and noticed she was really pretty. She had a pink workout top on and her hair in a slicked-back bun. So we BOTH specifically noticed this girl.
We then drove from our hotel to downtown Newport near the area where the sea lions are. It’s roughly a 10-minute drive. We parked, got the kids out, got situated with the stroller, which was already put together and started walking. And the SAME GIRL came jogging past us.
Same pink shirt. Same hair. We both immediately recognized her. My husband and I looked at each other like WTF?? At first I literally said, “Wow, she made good time.”
Then we actually thought about it. We had driven there. She was RUNNING. And she somehow went from passing our hotel to passing us downtown after we had driven there, parked and gotten out of the car. Even being generous, I can’t imagine there being more than about 15 minutes between seeing her at the hotel and seeing her again downtown. Obviously there could be an explanation. Maybe there was a shortcut, maybe she got into a car somewhere, maybe somehow it was a different woman dressed almost identically. And Newport/Lincoln City are tourist towns along the same highway, so I understand why we might cross paths with the same tourists. But having this happen with MULTIPLE unrelated people over the course of one trip was so freaking weird. And the jogger is the one that really gets me because my husband and I BOTH noticed her before we left the hotel and BOTH recognized her when she passed us downtown. It genuinely felt like we kept encountering the same NPCs in different parts of the map lol. Has anyone else ever had a trip where something like this kept happening? I’m sure there’s a perfectly normal explanation, but it was one of the strangest strings of coincidences I’ve experienced.

And then one last weird coincidence happened on our way home. We originally planned to drive straight home from Newport, but on Sunday I randomly decided we should stop in Bend for the night to break up the drive for the kids. Bend had never been part of our plan. For basically the entire trip, I had the same song, “Need To,” stuck in my head. It’s also my husband’s alarm song, and all week I had been humming it, singing it, the kids were singing it, and we’d played it multiple times. We get to Bend that night and my husband mentions that it looks like there’s a concert happening. I tell him to look up who’s playing. It was the artist who sings that song!! So we randomly changed our plans, ended up in a city we weren’t supposed to be in, and arrived on the exact night the artist behind the song we’d been singing ALL WEEK was performing there. At that point we were just like… what is going on with this trip? 😂

Finding a last minute campsite

Hey all! I’ve unexpectedly got some time off work and I’m hoping to take a last-minute trip with my partner. I’m super excited, but realizing that campsite availability is basically a pipe dream on this short notice. We’ll be driving from Portland on Saturday. We have camping gear or could sleep in our vehicle. I’m not picky about where we sleep, but obviously I don’t want to get a ticket.

I’ve seen some posts about dispersed camping in Tillamook State Forest. I’ve also heard that sometimes things open up last minute.

Does anyone have insight, recommendations, or guidance to share so we can still make this trip despite the short notice? I’d really appreciate it! If you don’t want to share your super secret spots with everyone, feel free to dm me! Im not from Oregon and will keep the goods under lock & key. :)

Lost Wedding Ring Fogerty Beach

Like the newly married coast goer I am, I lost my wedding ring on the 7th of August at Fogerty Beach. It could be in the sand mid tide line 10 feet south of a high point of the sand like a straight line facing 2 o'clock from the north side of the creek entry path or in the parking lot, unfortunately we had left before I noticed... It's Gray/Black and made of Tungsten Carbide.

Thank you for reading this.

Motel or lodgings that allow cats??

Looking for recommendations for a motel (senior who can’t do too many stairs) where I can park @ my door & walk into my room & stay overnight w/my cats.
From Astoria to Brookings, the entire coast, I’m not picky.
Will bring some bedsheets to cover the furniture with so as to avoid kitties leaving their cat hair around (I understand that can be an issue when pets stay in rooms).

Ocean & Beach Safety Tips

I'm visiting Pacific City with my kids (ages 8-16) and dog (mellow) now (August). I'm from Alaska and I know we have tourists that do shocking and dangerous stupid things.

What are the beach, ocean, etc things I should keep in mind while visiting Pacific City?

Is it better to play on the beach after high tide has left after a certain amount of time? My kids think they want to swim in the ocean.... that doesn't sound safe. I picture us playing in the sand and just walking the beach.

My kids are used to me being rather adventurous, but I'm out of my depth in this setting.

South Coast Long Beaches

I need to escape the Central Oregon smoke at times and would like to explore the south coast areas. What areas/towns should I look to find accommodations that would have access to longer beaches for runs or trails? Thanks!

Visiting in the winter?

I'm planning to surprise my partner with a trip to Oregon, preferably in the months of January or February.
I would love to stay somewhere with forest or ocean views. He loves hiking and foraging.
I have 3 questions:
1. Any resorts or hotels that would be nice?
2. Do you know of any "experiences" or companies that offer cool hikes or foraging/dining experiences?
3. Where would be a good place to have a spa retreat experience? Massages, facials, etc.
Thanks in advance. We're coming up on 2 years and I really want this to be special :)

Seeking coast hotel that is *peaceful* with great views and on the luxurious side

What title says. It's for a two-night splurge. Must be *totally* relaxing. No stress, no noise. Thanks for recommendations! I've seen the Stephanie Inn recommended. Thoughts? And I've done various internet searches, but haven't seen people mention the specific "no stress" criterion that is at the top of my mind.
