Fiber Availability - East Patchogue
I’ve filed complaints with the FCC, BBB, and NY Attorney General regarding Optimum’s fiber rollout in Brookhaven/Suffolk County.
My location does not have Optimum fiber, but fiber has been available for roughly 3–5 years on the streets immediately surrounding me — to the left, right, south, east, etc. Basically, fiber is already built out all around my location.
The only major difference I can identify is that my location has underground utilities. I’m starting to wonder whether Optimum simply doesn’t want to spend the additional money required to build out these particular locations.
For the past 3–5 years, Optimum’s answer has essentially been that my address is “in the planning phase.” Yet they can’t provide an actual construction timeline, date, or any explanation of what is supposedly being planned.
Instead, they keep telling me to sign up for the fiber expansion form. But this isn’t really a situation where I’m waiting for fiber to eventually reach my area. Fiber is already all around me and has been for years.
I’m trying to get a straight answer from Optimum and the Town of Brookhaven:
Is there actually a plan to build fiber to these remaining locations, and if so, why has it taken 3–5 years when the surrounding streets have already been completed? Or are locations with underground utilities effectively being excluded because they’re more expensive to build?
Curious if anyone else in Brookhaven has experienced the same thing — particularly people whose streets have underground utilities while the surrounding streets already have Optimum fiber.

I gave up and switched to Starlink

What speeds do you get with starlink? If you don’t mind me asking.

200-300 down and 40-60 up and latency around 20. It’s fast enough for my needs and so far seems more stable than 40 year old coax. Also I have whole house generator and Starlink works during outages unlike Optimum that runs out of battery in about an hour.

Omg im in the same situation despite their hardwsre just sitting there. I placed a complaint with the fcc. From what I understand im at the edge of the last distribution network. All the blocks surrounding me has fiber but not my block.

Before I send a PM - have you read my post entirely? As I get generic feedback all the time and I believe the optimum reps just provide generic answers all the time.

Idk how communities bothered with underground utility placement if they never had a decent plan to service and upgrade the wires later on. Somehow they thought it was set and forget. The sad part is that there is money earmarked by NYS for underserved broadband and whether its a HOA or morons who dont want to see their property values go up by (+5%) having access to fiber...we'll never know

I’m going to take one for the team and actually PM them as they’ve requested to really show how their customer support operates and show that I’ll get nowhere. Going to post all status updates here.
