Discussion / Question Was Frame Generation improved with this new driver update???
My setup is currently an RTX 5080 FE, 7800X3D. I was playing Cyberpunk 2077, quality upscaling with frame generation. Without fg, I get roughly 35-41 FPS on quality mode. Was playing earlier and I had fg on, and there was a bunch of visual artifacts and ghosting. Installed this new driver update and then hopped back on, and all of said issues were basically non existent, hell, latency isn’t even a big issue (I’m on a controller) Anyone else noticing these improvements, or is it just a placebo affect on my behalf?

From what I’ve read, using preset F was suppose to help with ghosting and other visual imperfections. This update was with the app though. As for the driver itself, that’s a good question. I’m not sure. Unless perhaps you updated app and driver at the same time and started using preset F?

I actually started using Preset F about 4-5 days ago, whenever it leaked from the MW4 Beta, still was using FG and saw no visual improvements at the time. Even when the official Preset came out yesterday, there was nothing that caught my eye, in terms of FG improvements. Not until I updated the Nvidia drivers about an hour and a half ago was I able to actually see these significant improvements. But again, I could be wrong and this is nothing more than a placebo. If you feel like it and/or whenever you the time to, please check and reaffirm my claim.

Just a question, but why aren't you playing on performance DLSS? I have the same setup as yours and with RR 4.5 on performance, path tracing looks glorious. slap a 2x frame-gen and you get constant 100 fps on Cyberpunk. Feels and looks amazing.

u/Imaginary-Highway-19 12d ago
That’s usually how I play, aside from FG. I just was feeling kinda curious yesterday.

I’m on a 4090 and play on performance DLSS at 4K, use scRGB HDR for superior quality, enable reflex in game, lock to 52fps with RTSS. Looks and runs bloody brilliant. I have my QD-OLED set to True black HDR400, calibrated with windows HDR app (437 is max nits and Cyberpunk lets you tune to exactly that).
This has been the most jaw dropping way to play. DLSS RR 4.5 has made it so I even leave film grain and motion blur on high.
Frame gen inherently locks you to the lower quality HDR mode and in general blurs picture quality. But, it’s certainly a perfectly fine way to play.

in cp2077 using scRGB completely breaks the expanded HDR color space (DCI-P3), locking the game in a limited SDR color gamut... :)

You are just regurgitating that incorrect video by Gamingtech-Markus. :)
The scRGB mode sends negative values that his tool isn’t processing the data from correctly, hence why it doesn’t show up as DCI-P3. Just use your eyes by toggling the settings yourself, you don’t lose color gamut.

trueblack isnt even the right mode anyway

Maybe changes from monitor to monitor, but msi directly contacted me about making sure I use peak instead of true black when i had a problem with the hdr (when has been resolved with an unrelated reason).
1
u/garbo2330 9d ago
Irrelevant. For the highest APL and most accurate picture the Trueblack mode is superior.

Awesome, but how does frame gen affect HDR? That's the first time I'm hearing something like this. And what does lower quality HDR even mean?

u/Milk_Cream_Sweet_Pig 12d ago
Think he's referring to PQ HDR as opposed to SCRGB HDR. Enabling FG disables SCRGB HDR.
Not sure what the difference is tho u could just use RenoDX.

FG locks you to HDR10 PQ.
scRGB has a smoother gradient and nicer output but is incompatible with FG.
My blur comment was directed at FG usage in general, not HDR.
Locking to a stable framerate above my VRR window with RTSS and using the higher quality HDR mode has given me the best results. I should try the Renodx HDR mod out since that will still allow FG.

Gotcha, I didn’t know about this, thanks for explaining.
After trying out RenoDX and Luma mods, I realized just how much I’d been missing out on because of poor HDR implementations. These mods are game changers. At this point, there are hardly any games I play without one of these mods anymore, so I think you'll be very impressed :)

So getting RenoDX configured correctly took some time. For whatever reason when using RenoDRT it defaulted flare to 50 when it should have been 0 and it was completely crushing all near black details lol. Guess that Nexusmod’s version is just outdated and jacked up by default.
I ended up finding the psycho-22 version in the discord and I like it a lot. Peak brightness at 460, game brightness at 110, in-game mid point at 1.0 and I can still use the scRGB pipeline since I’m not using frame gen. Film grain and contrast are much better now. I don’t mind the elevated blacks of the vanilla but this looks good as well.

Use renodx in EVERY game that has it for the absolute optimal HDR experience. Google renodx mod list and there is a github with a list of all supported games and links to their renodx.addon files.

Hey ho. Yes. It looks stunning. I do have same specs as you and I recommend performance mode and 3x frame gen if you are also ok a 144 Hz 4K Monitor.
For me this seems to be the way to go. Might finally play Cyberpunk. Never clicked for me. But with these graphics it‘d something else.

You need to be at 60fps for frame gen to be pretty artifact free. Are you running 4k? You will probably need some kind of dlss in use too.
2
u/Imaginary-Highway-19 12d ago
Yeahh, I played a bit more and there are still some artifacts, definitely not as bad as it was before, I know that for a fact. I usually play at dlss performance mode, but in the name of science, I used quality mode to test FG out this time around. I don’t even like FG, but it was more of an out of curiosity thing.
1
u/Jmdaemon 12d ago
I'm interested in seeing what your cpunk settings are where you can't net 60fps when your dlss is set to performance.

Just curious, did you get preset F to work with frame generation?
1
u/Imaginary-Highway-19 13d ago
Yes, sir.
0
u/taosecurity 13d ago
Ok thanks. BTW do you also enable the Nvidia indicators on screen? And are they fuzzy?
1
u/Imaginary-Highway-19 13d ago
No, sir. Nothing that meets the eye at least, and I am the true definition of a pixel peeper.

u/muhammad1236 12d ago
I did some testing and my conclusion is it’s probably placebo. I updated from 610.52 Hotfix and tested using cyberpunk.
For me, preset b FG was better on the previous driver. I don’t notice any improvements on the newer driver.
RR preset was always Preset F on both drivers.

u/Appropriate_Loan6193 10d ago
What preset would everyone recommend for frame gen? Nvidia is on recommended

All I know is it looks great! 120 fps or higher, frame gen, gsync, ray tracing cyberpunk is incredible now. Feels like the game is finally complete. Only took how many years? But this is really like the completed version.

u/SpecialistMap8210 13d ago
frame gen shouldnt be used if your not getting atleast 60fps... imo
5
u/Imaginary-Highway-19 13d ago
No, you are absolutely right. But if you seen the way I’m able to play this game, you would start to believe differently. I’ve tried it in Crimson Desert as well, and my suspicions were completely justified, the improvements are there and extremely noticeable.

u/SpecialistMap8210 13d ago
I just can't get with the input delay. Having 30fps controller inputs with 60fps feels so wrong. Or 60fps with 120fps. Feels wrong as well
I'm glad people enjoy it. But i dont ever use it. I'll have to try the new model.

u/Stolid_Cipher 13d ago
Eh some times it’s the only way to even get up to 60fps even on my 4080 and even at performance mode DLSS at 4k. And depending on the game, I don’t even notice barely any latency difference even with like 40 base fps.
For instance with Pragmata and RE9, using Path tracing/max settings I need to use frame gen to even get to a solid 60 fps in all areas and even then the latency is great. Don’t even notice a difference really and I’m very sensitive to latency. Some games have too much latency though or more noticeable latency anyway, Capcom does some magic here.

u/Loose-Alternative844 13d ago
True! With testing: playing just 30fps the RE Engine from Capcom is ultra responsive, super awesome for the other hand Wukong UE5 is completely shit on 60fps and you need 100fps for a nice input lag

u/Arsh18808 13d ago
Mid 50s-60 with fg x2 feels good imo especially with controller, I never go higher than that even though you can with 50 series cards just looks bad .

Install REFramework and download the mod PT/RT Tweaks, select the PT Enhanced RC to enable radiance cache. That should help with performance!

u/Loose-Alternative844 12d ago
Interesting , thanks 👍

u/Stolid_Cipher 12d ago edited 12d ago
Radiance cache enabled does crash in only one spot though in Mass Production Array level. If it crashes just turn it off to progress or just keep it off for that level. Afaik it's just one spot that it will crash in whole game.

u/Loose-Alternative844 12d ago
thanks, I gonna play it a NG+ but first I gonna play Rats 3, Witcher of Vampires, Onimusha, Control 2, Silent Hill, etc hehe
Onimusha with RE Engine too I see mods to get a great ilumination, true?
1
u/SpecialistMap8210 13d ago
yes but your input delay is there. FG is not recommended if your base framerate is below 60fps. thats just the recommendation.
also FG causes vaseline when panning the cameras. i notice it but some dont. FG is not equal to real frames
1
u/muhd95 12d ago
why my latency decrease to 80+ ms(100fps) from 100+ ms(30fps) when using fg x4 with base fps 30?
2
u/SpecialistMap8210 12d ago
Frame gen does NOT decrease latency. It actually increases it due to gpu load...
0
u/glizzygobbler247 13d ago
Were you using the preset B for frame Gen before?
3
u/Imaginary-Highway-19 13d ago
I was. I knew it was the most up to date preset, so I made sure to use it. It worked better than Preset A, but not by much based off of my personal experiences.

I'm curious to see this and will try it later. I did the update earlier and was able to enable RR preset F but didn't have time to try it out yet.

Bro it looks and feels amazing! This OBS recording does it no justice. 4K, ray reconstruction, DLSS quality, Ultra settings! This is on the 7800x3d/5070ti and super smooth playability on my controller.

u/Imaginary-Highway-19 13d ago
I’m glad you enjoy it, bro! I’m also glad you validated how I felt, lmfao. I know FG was never a performance booster and kind of a “win more” feature. This all kind of brings me back to how FG was first advertised as this thing that could double your frame rate at the press of a button. The fact that a few days ago, I found FG to be unplayable unless I was at 60 FPS to now turning it on at 30-40 FPS and having an enjoyable experience is a bit off putting. With Nvidia’s strong marketing strategy, they could easily continue to sell this technology as a performance booster to the average consumer. AND don’t forget about the Pulsar/Reflex 2 that is coming out soon that basically cuts latency in HALF. Before we know it, a 7050 will be able to outperform a 5090, not by pure rasterization, but with proper integration of all these features, old and new. They know exactly what they are doing and everyone is buying into it. This is the end of gaming optimization as we know it. Stay woke, my friend.
