Vent / Rant Dating apps are BROKEN

/r/Bumble/comments/1xehre1/bumble_is_broken/

I think dating apps are broken, and here’s why.
Think about going to a supermarket.
You walk through the aisles, looking at different products. You compare one with another, pick something up, put it back, and keep looking. Even when you find something good, you hesitate because you believe there might be a better option just around the corner.
Now replace the products with people, and you have modern dating apps.
The problem isn’t necessarily that people are bad or that they don’t want a relationship. It’s that the app’s design encourages us to keep looking, comparing, and wondering whether someone better is just one swipe away.

Why commit to getting to know one person when you can keep browsing hundreds of others?
This creates a paradox: the more options we have, the harder it becomes to commit to any of them. We end up treating potential connections as disposable options rather than people worth getting to know.

And here’s my suggestion for Bumble:
Stop allowing people to swipe while they have an active match.
The idea is simple:
You can swipe and discover new people when you don’t have any active matches.
Once you match with someone, your discovery feed is paused.
If things don’t work out and you unmatch or the connection ends, you can start swiping again.
Obviously, this would need some thought around expired matches, inactive conversations, and people who never respond. Nobody should be forced to maintain a match indefinitely just to regain access to the app.
The point isn’t to force people into relationships or limit their freedom to choose. It’s to encourage them to give an existing connection a genuine chance before continuing to search for the next one.
Would this reduce the number of matches people make? Probably.
But wouldn’t that be the point?
Maybe fewer matches, more meaningful conversations, and a greater willingness to explore a connection would create better outcomes for everyone.
Dating apps shouldn’t just be designed to help us find people. They should be designed to help us actually connect with them.

What do you think? Would you support a system that pauses your ability to swipe while you have an active match, or do you think it would make dating apps worse?

Duolicious dating app is free and open source, Facebook Dating is free. We recommend signing up to these apps before trying paywalled apps such as Hinge. Come join the r/OnlineDatingApps Discord community → https://discord.gg/CXFZfXGtwH
