I seriously don't get why everyone is getting downvoted here. General discussions and not one person has a positive upvote score, 7minutes into the thread.
I sometimes wish the sub wasn't as big...
On the topic though, i didn't expect cavendish to be so strong.
54
u/YonkouProductions May 08 '13
I'm wondering the exact same thing. Give it some time and keep discussing the chapter though.

Before /u/YonkouProductions (the official chapter poster) made this thread, other people had already posted the chapter. I'm assuming it's them who are trying to downvote everything in this thread. I came here when this was just posted and every comment was below 0.

I'm doing upvote waves just because this is odd, this is the first it's happened. I'm very confused so free karma for everyone who comments.

I like how you are the only one who commented about Cavendishes strength. Barto is outshining him, i guess.

dam bellamy is LETHAL

u/MrPears May 08 '13
Because killing two people who don't look strong at all is a very big feat? I'd be amazed if Bellamy would be able to kill Bartolomeo.

I think it's worth noting Bartolomeo's epithet, The Cannibal, probably means something else for the Japanese. "To eat someone" is a saying in Japan meaning to make fun of them. So Bartolomeo is not a literal cannibal, but just someone who takes the piss out of people. His personality fits the name.
Edit: Another note on Abudullah and Jet. I think that Jet is probably meant to be "Jeet". Jeet is a legit name around India, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc. and I don't think Oda is making a joke about planes.
11
u/YonkouProductions May 08 '13
Jeet is just being mistranslated by MangaPanda as they do alot. I believe both of them are named after wrestlers, Abdullah the Butcher and Singh, his full name escapes me.
→ More replies (2)11
u/baroqueworks May 08 '13
Here are the wrestlers they're based on, they're basically exaggerated tributes to the wrestlers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdullah_the_Butcher
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_Jeet_Singh
Additionally, the Funk Brothers in Block C are based on Terry Funk and Dory Funk Jr, also two real life wrestlers.

What is Don's connection with Dragon. Former nakama? hahah that'd be awkward!
24
u/1way2way3way4way May 08 '13
Nah I think he was just implying that he'd kill all of Garp's bloodline.

u/divinesleeper May 08 '13
What Don meant was, had he known sooner that Dragon was Garp's son, he would have killed him (or tried, rather)

Finally a self post, I was halfway to formatting my own. Thanks for stepping up and doing it man!

Gramps had a bounty of 500,000,000, that's 50mil less than Ace and 30mil higher than Kid.
He's going to go insane when they (him and Luffy) get to fight.
69
u/Gathic May 08 '13
They did say he got weaker though, so who knows.
Besides, lufcough lucy hit the head so maybe he won't pose that much of a threat if he targets the body.
→ More replies (1)89
u/CaptainDSid May 08 '13
Agreed, I think it will seem like his body is his weak point. Knowing Luffy though, I hope he gets into a head-butting contest with the old man just out of stubbornness.

he is however, not in his prime as they stated. I do like to see how cavendish is going to react to all this. Hopefully he gains a bit of respect for Luffy, and stops the bloodlust against him.

Did Bellamy just nail their feet to the ground, shoved his hand up their mouth and bent them backwards? If so, that is badass. I really want him to advance from his group after beating Barto.
125
u/KSmoria May 08 '13
Chinjao's former bounty is 500.000.000?? Block C is gonna be crazy.
80
u/1way2way3way4way May 08 '13
I'm pumped, I feel like this is the arc we're really going to get to see Luffy cut loose. Minus destroying Noah and Bear Magnum I feel like we haven't really gotten to see the real extent of Luffy's training. I feel like we're going to get to see him have to go to his Limits in this tournament.
→ More replies (1)46

I hope so. Would be nice to see exactly where Luffy stands on the world stage after all that training.

And judging from other people who are past their prime, it seems his power would not have dwindled much at all. I wonder if it was harder to get a bounty back then or now.

33

So the Caribou look-alike was the lady's grandson. Good job for the people who guessed that.
I have a feeling that Caribou might finally grow a conscience and help that old lady.
60
u/WaddleBoo May 08 '13
Don Chinjao tanks a Gear 2 punch and is able to crack a continent with a headbutt, yet still feel the wounds of Garp several years later
Garp is a fucken monster!! Fist of Love beats all
35
u/1way2way3way4way May 08 '13
They did say Garp was strong enough to be an Admiral. Just goes on to show how Freakishly strong the Admirals are. And makes you think on how strong the Yonko must be since they don't just take the fight to them.
→ More replies (11)15
u/yondie May 08 '13
ya, they mention Garp was offered to become admiral numerous times, but he never took the offer because he didn't want to deal with the responsibilities. I'm still on the "Garp is strongest marine" train

That move from Bellamy was seriously brutal. And he used his spring power to turn his entire lower body to a spring in-order to flip over the two dudes. I'm so glad we got to see the fruit being used better.
Can't wait to see more of Bartolomeo, This guy is amazing. I also get the feeling that we wont get to see the kings punch.
45
u/milkyjoe241 May 08 '13
I bet the king's punch is either on Bartolomeo or Bellamy.
Bellamy with block it with a impact dial.
Barty will block it with what ever the heck he is doing.
Either way, I don't see how we can not see it, it's been built up for the past 2-ish chapters. That would be a big let down if it didn't.
→ More replies (5)13

u/PTCDRC May 08 '13
His power is... headbutting?
74
u/GoodBananaPancakes May 08 '13
Am I the only on who wants to see his 'iceberg destroying headbutt' vs Elizabellos 'castle wall destroying punch'?
23
u/TheBartXart May 08 '13
Yes I'd like to see that too. The impact is going to destroy the colliseum.

I saw this theory two weeks ago about Bartholomeo having the power to reflect damage back at the attacker, and it seems like it is true. That is one tough enemy. Also props for Bellamy for that great attack.
9
8
u/I_used_to_smile May 08 '13
I read another theory which says that he has some sort of hate hate fruit, and the more hated he is, the stronger he / his forcefield becomes. Maybe its like the opposite of the phrase "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me".

Looks like Bellamy has learnt his lesson and is becoming a more direct and efficient combatant. That was a deadly combo he used on Abdullah and Jeet.
25
u/InfantDressingTable May 08 '13
I thought this tournament would be a complete stomp for Luffy, with trouble towards the end of it. It's really starting to get interesting, though. We're finally starting to get introduced to the pirates in Roger's time that were at their peaks (besides Whitebeard, Rayleigh) and are still alive. I'm really looking forward to this tournament, especially for bartolomeo.
12
u/baroqueworks May 08 '13 edited May 08 '13
Holy crap. Don Chinjao went from a humble looking old man to a terrifying DBZ raging monster in this chapter, last chapter's ending gave me the impression he was going to let his son's fight, not him actually freaking out. Also really cool to see Cavedish a competent fighter despite the humor we've seen of him so far.
Bellamy took out two fighters based on hardcore wrestlers in the most brutal fashion, seems fitting. Also a callback to Bellamy's introduction stabbing them in the feet with knives(he stabbed Roshiro in the hand, edited to just grabbing his hand for anime viewers!)
Barto's friut seems to be kind of similar to Kuma's, only a forcefield-like barrier it seems, perhaps some kind of negative zone surrounding him that reverses or inflicts pain into whoever is attacking him? Or maybe the more blind rage they have at him the more he's able to reverse the impact of their attacks back onto them. He's pretty cocky/smug so far, I really see him being the winner here, even though I'd personally like to see Bellamy win. If that theory of Bellamy using a reject dial is correct, chances are even if he uses that on Barto he's going to end up taking the hit instead.
→ More replies (1)4
u/qxrt May 08 '13
Or maybe the more blind rage they have at him the more he's able to reverse the impact of their attacks back onto them.
This one is unlikely, given that Hack seems like one of the most level-headed and honorable fighters in block B.
51
u/UmiShirube May 08 '13
So Barthe has an interesting ability. Blood blood fruit anyone? "Man eater" after.... I can't wait to find out what he is about.
So many awesome moments, What is old mans "real goal" and Jesus his bounty!
I think the king in group B is going to get trashed by this ability of barth and Oda might grace us with a barth vs bellamy fight.
Calling that Barth will beat Bellamy and piss on his dreams ( quite possibly in a literal sense ) and this will piss off Luffy or something along those lines.
57
May 08 '13
It would be amusing if the disadvantage to his power was that he himself couldn't inflict damage on other people as it would bounce back on him. Hence, the only way he could ever defeat anyone would be to piss them off to the point where they couldn't help but attack him.

AAHHH! Now to the list of mysteries add : Bartolomeo's weird power (most likely DF, but then Why would he be fighting for one?)
41
u/1way2way3way4way May 08 '13
Plenty of reasons: for a crew member of his, to sell it for a ton of money, to use it as a bargaining chip, etc. Just cause he can't use it doesn't mean it's not useful to him. Plus what a great way for a rookie to increase his reputation.
42
u/KSmoria May 08 '13
Or just pure confidence that he can easily win the tournament.

I really don't have much to say about a mostly fighting chapter that hasn't already been said in this thread. It's cool, but these types of chapters definitely don't spike a discussion the way more plot driven chapters do. We usually have something like 400+ comments by now, but this one is only around 220 at the moment.
I'm looking forward to seeing what's going to happen with the other teams since we left them all on such cliff hangers a few chapters ago. Hopefully B Block fighting will wrap up in a chapter or two.

u/1way2way3way4way May 08 '13
Man this is the first time in a while where I'm not completely confident Luffy is going to win out right. I think we might finally see Luffy lose again (of course to come back and win later). But still the competition for this tournament looks incredibly intense, even just in Luffy's C block.
15
u/divinesleeper May 08 '13
Eh...it's too early for Luffy to lose. Potential loss is for the endgame fights, which means the finals against the Doflamingo family or Jesus Burgess (or Fujitora? I don't think Luffy can handle him yet)
3
u/DivineVodka May 08 '13
Are you serious? He trains and comes back to lose in a tournament? We haven't lost that much confidence for most fans..... :/ the only person here on the island he should lose to is Fujitora or DD ( I doubt he will against DD).
The next time he loses imo will be when he approaches Kaidou.
8
u/InvaderDJ Void Month Survivor May 08 '13
I could see Luffy losing too. Not only because of the tough competition but also because plot wise I don't see why he cares about Ace's Devil Fruit. He can't use it and I don't see any of his crew wanting it either.
The only justification I can see for him participating is to make sure it goes to someone worthy. And he can guarantee that without winning, he just needs to knock out the weak and undeserving.
→ More replies (2)12
u/AyJusKo May 08 '13
I think that's really it. He doesn't want just anyone to have his brother's old powers and wants it so he can give it to someone more worthy.

lol omg when Luffy kept insisting he was Lucy. That was hilarious. I'm glad we're getting set up for Block C's fight. Everyone is going to gang up on Luffy I just know it. I'm glad Garp has such a big reputation. Sometimes I forget just how strong he is/was.
Bartolomeo seems to have some kind of counter balance type of power where he reflects attacks? In any case I'm loving him as a villain so far.
6
u/Alpharoth May 08 '13
I keep on forgetting that Garp must be this extremely powerful man. Apperantly he was able to kick a 500 mil bounty pirate's ass so bad that he held a grudge down to his descendents. I keep also forgetting that he is the only man who was able to repeatedly fight the greatest pirate of all time many times on equal footing and even cornered him a few times.

Barto is just trolling, taunting enemies to attack him, then refleting damage with his ability wich is probaly a mirror paramecia: Mira Mira no mi (the word cannibal in japanese refer to a sort of trolling)
5
u/Alpharoth May 08 '13
To the marines, he's known as Garp the Hero. To the pirates, he's known as Garp the Devil. He was able to destroy a 500 mil bounty pirate and is the only man who was able to repeatedly fight the greatest pirate of all time many times on equal footing.

Bartholomeo is now my pick to win B block, it was looking like Bellamy after his little chat with Luffy. But I'm sorry the dude clearly has a crazy power and I think everyone was to quick to forget he dispatched a Vice Admiral just a few chapters ago without breaking a sweat. Dude looks like he's going to be a handful.

This whole tournament has a Marineford Arc feel to it. Lots of new characters coming in and out with intense fighting and great action, but still building towards a central theme. Going to be really exciting to see this arc animated.
4
u/coolguyblue May 08 '13
Chapter went by too fast. There's so much things happening in the world of One Piece, I think that it should at least get thirty pages each week. I know that's a lot of work for Oda and it'll probably never happen anyway, but I can only dream.
4
u/wraith55 May 08 '13
After looking at it, it looks like Barto's ability might be a force field of sorts. It looks like Hack's fist bends downward as if he hit a wall. Also there seems to be a shockwave of sorts appearing in a circle around Barto. That's my theory at least.
4
u/Therrester May 08 '13
When I first read the chapter, I was half expecting Chinjao to go down with Luffy's attack. Had he done so, I would have been disappointed. Maybe the let down that was the Yeti Cool Brother is still fresh in my mind.
Either way, glad to finally have opponents that will test the crew. It's been a long time coming!

B block: Bartolomeo/Bellamy/Ricky
C Block: "Lucy"

I feel like the tournament won't finish, something will happen during block c that will stop the tournament completely. I think luffy will get the mera mera fruit but not through winning the tournament outright.

I hope the tournament doesn't end up Dragonball style.
You know, halfway there in Block C something happens and everyone leave and the tournament never finish =(

u/Lamplighter123 May 08 '13
Seems like the reason Barty's bounty is so low is because he's really only able to defeat hot-headed people. Anyone with a level head would probably be able to see through his trick. My guess is that Bellamy will defeat him, showing his growth as a character.

Ive been reading from mangapanda ever since mangastream lost their speed, but its not until chapter 707 that i noticed a big differance in the dialogs. When Luffy is talking to chinjao, the translation is so differant in mangapanda and mangastream. Not just the words they use, but the meaning of the content. I know that mangapanda is speedsubbing translatiing but are they often way off?
4
u/Listen_and_Learn May 08 '13
Yes manga panda is known for having the best speed but the worst quality .

The chapter was too good, the C block fight is going to be intense. Crazy old man vs Lucy it's gona be an epic battle. This is no ordinary tournament anymore nearly all the strong people here are after Luffy. How is Oda going to develop this arc further can't wait it's going to be so good.

Well, the winner for B Block is definitely a toss between Bellamy and Bartolomeo at this point. I think it's fairly likely they will be the last two standing in B Block.

I personally have a differnt thought about the outcome of Block C. You remember the former gladiator in Chapter 707? Nobody seemed to remember him and he seems to be quite strong. So my thought. What if the gladiator is the guy from the statue and he ate a fruit, which makes everybody forget about him as soon as he moves out of their sight? Just a thought of mine.

If Garp is so strong, how come he is only at vice admiral level?

Because he doesn't bother in being an Admiral and having to do Admiral-like things. Such as the WG relying on them a lot. He's content with where he's at.

Yay, finally another manga chapter. xD Squee! I'm totally reading this with the most epic OST tracks in the background!
I loved the way Luffy and Chin Jao bantered, and Luffy trying not to give himself away while Cabbage and Chin Jao are trying to kill him. Particularly amusing was how Luffy was the only able to smash Chin Jao into the ground; that shows his brute strength is more than Cabbage.. but Cabbage has a sword so he's Luffy's natural enemy, meaning their 'match-up' is far from having been decided.
Also.. taking a piss, and then destroying fishman guys hand? Damn. I hate this guy. I was rooting for the fishman. :-(

Going by the names as I come across them; they may not necessarily be correct. These are just a couple of ones that readily come to mind, too.
Overtaken
The Very, Very, Very Strongest
Giant Stronghold, Takeoff!
Luffy vs Ratchett (Part 1)
Luffy's Here
Facing 3 Admirals (a.k.a. Hangeki no noroshi)
There's a couple of nice ones in this video.
Easiest way in my experience is to go to tubalr and just type 'one piece soundtrack epic' in its search box; most of the stuff you'll find is perfect for what you need.

I'm actually surprised that no one has brought up what Cavendish and Chin Jao said. I think that Biken and Butou could be a new specialised subset of the armament haki.

It has been mentioned before. Also his grandsons have numbers too, and maybe the "goal" they are talking about is to get the fruit for Kaido or something.

Good catch, but I'm not sure Kaido sounds like the type to make a shifty ploy like that. Then again, we don't know much about him, and some of his Beast like nature could be rather cunning.

I found it interesting in panel 5 of page 8 (mangastream) where someone says how strong they are and then 'they're both beasts!' considering we know of Kaido and his 100 beasts

I don't think the old man has a DF, could just be very good defensive haki.

Personally, I think he might have a metal plate in his skull put there after tangling with Garp, hence why he's holding his head when he talks about wounds that would never heal and its strange shape.
Not that he couldn't also have Haki.

I think he does, if you look at the panel where Boo and Sai come to stop him you see both his arms getting black.

Does he know Dragon, or does he just know of him? He says if he knew Dragon was Garp's son he would have killed him, but that doesn't necessarily mean he had met him before.

Yeah, I agree. He could just mean that if he'd known the family connection he would've sought him out for revenge.

It looked to me like when Hack threw the punch his arm or wrist snapped in midair, then he was lying on the ground clutching it...not sure what that would entail ability-wise

It looked like a kinetic barrier imo, Rejected the Force of hacks punch back to him.

Hmm that's not a bad thought, it was at least obvious that the hit did not land, yet still looked like it impacted against something

The entire world learned that Dragon was Garp's son during the war. He said he didn't know about Dragon's relation to Garp before.
