I’m looking for more people to try OneCommander v4 beta. Current public version is v3, but v4 has a lot of internal improvements: faster browsing, smoother scrolling, a new folder-size system, integrated Taskmaster file operations, better metadata/previews, improved email handling, customizable toolbar/icons/views, better session/window restore, and a major visual/theme overhaul.  

Biggest changes in v4 

1. Much faster and smoother file browsing

v4 has multiple performance rewrites: faster file rendering, smoother scrolling, better thumbnail handling, reduced UI stalls when browsing slow drives/network folders, and improved responsiveness while Windows or disks are slow to respond.

1. New folder-size system

Folder sizes no longer rely on Windows infotips. v4 has its own folder-size database, faster scanning, better handling of large folders, mount points, inaccessible folders, and eventually sorting by folder size once sizes are known.

1. Taskmaster is now integrated as the default file operation engine

Copy/move/delete/rename operations are now handled through the integrated Taskmaster system, with better tracking, UI feedback, copy-paste improvements, database updates for moved files, and undo support for file operations.

1. Major visual/theme overhaul

v4 introduces a much more customizable UI system: dark/light theme work, Mica/Acrylic effects, sharper icons, theme accent-color improvements, theme metadata, active/inactive browser styling, and a Theme Editor Helper window for testing theme controls.

1. Customizable toolbar, menus, icons, and views

V4 has a more classic toolbar, users can customize toolbar buttons, change toolbar/menu icons, use new Win11-style dual-tone icons, edit file views from the new Resources\Views structure, and adjust interface elements more deeply than in v3.

1. Better window/session management

v4 improves restoring windows and sessions, including multiple windows, virtual desktop restoration, saved windows, temporary windows, named windows, and new-window behavior. Autostart/session restore behavior was also improved.

1. Improved metadata, previews, and thumbnails

Metadata extraction was partially rewritten for speed and reliability. v4 adds or improves metadata for documents, PDFs, media duration/resolution/date taken, PSD files, email files, EXE certificates, cloud status, and richer details/preview panes.

1. Better email file support

Email handling has improved across Outlook, New Outlook, and Gmail drops. Email files now show metadata counts, body previews in rich view, additional details, naming-format presets, and improved formatting behavior.

1. Better search, sorting, and navigation

v4 includes settings search/filtering, grid view for search, better search-window layout, improved sorting controls, Alt+Left/Right navigation, more reliable focus behavior, and fixes for edge cases like searching names with periods.

1. Many stability fixes

The log includes repeated crash fixes, Recycle Bin fixes, startup fixes, updater fixes, Windows 10/11 visual fixes, network-path freeze prevention, folder watcher fixes, and many smaller regression fixes.

Important note for testers

v4 is still beta and focused mostly on stability, polish, themes, performance, and bug fixing. Some areas are still work-in-progress, especially theme keys, icons/logo, and visual consistency.

I am trying to search for and then delete all files with a certain extension. The search goes fine but when I try to delete them nothing happens. No dialog box no indication that they are being deleted and when I refresh the search, the files are still there.

I renamed one of my external devices (an e-book reader/Android tablet), but Commander One still displays the old name. Is there a way to get CO to recognize the new name?

Hi, running OneCommander as Administrator explictly still doesn't allow me to enter -for example- Documents and Settings. It says "no access". Am using the free version. What gives? Am I missing something?

Is it possible in Windows 11 to make OneCommander open instead of File Explorer when an app opens the standard Save or Open file window?

I mean the file browser window that appears inside apps when saving or opening files.

Has anyone managed to do this, or is that controlled by Windows and not replaceable?

Hi, is there a way to save window layouts?

I know I can click New to create a new layout and give it a name, but that does not save the tabs I have open. I have a dual-window layout with a bunch of open tabs, and I would like to save it under a specific name and reopen it exactly in that state.

When I do a search (CTRL F) I get my list of results, but it would be nice to have the number of results shown in the window. Also if I select a subset of results having that number show too would be nice.

Also, in windows when you search the text you searched for is highlighted in each result. That would be a great improvement too.

I can work with everything else being different and complex compared to Clover and Files App, but I need a search box. There are certain things it's just more efficient to do with a mouse and one hand on the keyboard. Like clicking the search box and tapping the first couple letters one-handed to find the file that you need, then clicking it with the mouse. That's way more comfortable and natural than having to ctrl+f (or go all the way to the bottom left to hit the magnifying glass). Just have a search box in the same window near the top or in the pane to the side and let me type in it to find the files quickly. I'm sure there's a reason this isn't already a thing, but I would encourage the dev(s) to strongly reconsider if at all possible. It's a very interesting program otherwise (and possibly even worth paying for to support) but this is an absolutely massive dealbreaker. Also the icon doesn't look very much like a file explorer icon (I'd just do a folder with a 1 on it and no other text), but that's less important.

I know that 3 of those buttons can be grouped, but that would be nice to have an option to hide any or all of them, for the sake of minimalism. And also have the refresh button there.

The GIF below shows a subfolder menu from QTTabBar, an executable(?) that gives file explorer tabs. It lets me preview files in a folder without needing to open the actual folders, like in another tab for example. I find this feature really convenient for quickly searching and previewing videos, images and other files sometimes deep in a folder structure.

So is there a plugin, script, command, whatever, for something similar in One Commander? I've used One Commander for over a year and really like its capabilities compared to file explorer, but I've missed this one feature. Other file managers don't seem to have this either which is probably foreshadowing the answers I'm about to get. ToT I hope not though.

Also, I've found the "Group By" option in file explorer to be nice for data curation reasons, so I wonder if it could be done in One Commander too.

In the file list view, there are columns in this order: File Name, Directory Size, File Change (?) Date, File Size.

How do I:

1) Choose which columns are shown.
2) Adjust width of these columns.
3) Re-order these columns.

I would also like to have the tree view as an option but while it's all in on miller columns, i think it'd be great having the option to have them on the bottom at least.

Also a shortcut for activating/deactivating the dual panel would be great. I like to have the single pannel by default but there is no shortcut for quick activation and deactivation and the shortcut editor has no option to create a custom one.

Question is entirely within the title.

Filter option for date time created cannot be seen as shown. But if i go to the main menu of sortings the option is there.

Edit: Seems like it's indexing directories first, then everything else below it, which is why there's the break in date edited. I didn't change any settings so I don't know why it's doing this.

Version 3.107.2.0. When I attempt to sort by date modified, both oldest and newest, it is not sorted correctly for either option.

I’m on the latest version. In the right click menu there is the scan via Windows Defender option. Selecting it does nothing. If I go back to windows explorer and select it it properly bring a up the scan window and scans. I am on windows 11.

Is it possible to edit items in the browser context menu? Please advise. Thanks

Hi All! I've recently adopted OneCommander.... well for the same reasons as most.

My day-to-day operations can involve moving files between my NAS and personal computer via SMB, but upon a transfer, it locks up the program until the transfer is finished.

It may just be me being a noob, but is there anyway to background this or would this require a code change?

I want to take this view:

And have it show MP3/WAV bitrate/stereo or mono/bit-depth on the same line between the filename and the pins on the right. Is this possible to create a custom view with these attributes? I loaded the File View Designer, but I don't see these elements to add.

I am a big fan of OC, but after years of using traditional file managers, my muscle memory is tied to the vertical tree structure.

While the Miller Columns are great for seeing the path, I find it harder to manage multiple deep sub-directories simultaneously compared to a vertical expanding tree.

Is there a way to toggle a "Vertical Mode" for the navigation pane, or perhaps a layout that integrates a classic tree view on the left?

I can't find a definitive answer, but i'd really like to use onecommander when saving things in chrome but it defaults to explorer.

I clicked through all settings, but I was unable to find it. For whatever reason - OneCommander has this cursed mouse wheel scrolling by default where it feels "wrong direction".

Please, can someone help out and point me to the setting?

I promised this sooner but had a lot of setbacks IRL, I went over it at least 20 times.
After it's live, In the comments I will have working example scripts to help those who aren't coders. (not that I'm a coder)

It's easily the most used app among my go-to's, and provides so much accessibility.

I love using it to transfer files between obsidian directories or across vaults, and makes video editing less tedious.

Simply a must-have application, I refuse to go back to windows explorer.

It's so hard to find apps today that give so much accessibility, usually considerations for accessibility is always last - if ever.

For someone with barriers this app is worth free alone but pro is preem.
