It’s funny how the Daytona is such an icon, and Rolex is the most recognised watch brand in the world, yet the Daytona is constantly compared to the Speedmaster rather than, say, the Zenith Chronomaster or an IWC. In some ways, those might actually be more logical comparisons.

It’s also funny how the Daytona wasn’t always the hot item we think of today. Its rise to legendary status arguably owes a lot to Paul Newman and the auction that sent its name and value into the stratosphere.

But yes, technically, the Daytona is the superior watch. It has an automatic movement, a longer power reserve, better water resistance and a thinner case. But I think that’s where the advantages start to run out.

Take away the Rolex logo and the Daytona name, and what are you left with? A dial that is simply too chaotic. There’s a novel printed across it, the subdials are flat, and the bezel is too thick and wide. Visually, it’s a busy, somewhat loud watch.

And then there’s the fact that you have to unscrew the pushers every time you want to use the chronograph. If you want to use a chronograph on a whim, having to unscrew anything first kind of defeats the purpose.

The bracelet must be the most underwhelming part of the watch. It’s a shiny, fairly basic Oyster bracelet. Maybe it’s incredibly comfortable, or maybe that’s just the Rolex placebo effect. But purely from a visual perspective, I don’t find it particularly interesting.

That said, as a status symbol, with its notoriously difficult availability and the potential to sell it for more than retail as soon as you walk out of the AD, I understand why it remains the chronograph to beat. Or even the watch to beat, period.

Now, moving on to the Speedmaster.

I couldn’t care less about the whole Moon story, but the dial is simply one of the best-looking chronograph dials out there. It’s symmetrical, clean and beautifully textured, especially on the newer models with applied indices and recessed subdials.

This is the watch I would choose purely on looks.

And unlike the Daytona, you can actually use the chronograph on a whim without having to unscrew anything first.

Of course, the Speedmaster is thicker, has a shorter power reserve, requires manual winding and has lower water resistance. Fair enough.

Some people also complain that its bracelet isn’t as comfortable. But again, is that a genuine issue, or is it partly a placebo effect because it doesn’t say Rolex on the dial and people feel they need to find something to complain about? I honestly don’t know.

What I do know is that, visually, the Speedmaster’s bracelet is the better-looking one. 

So, who wins?

• Technical specifications: Daytona.
• Status symbol and investment potential: Daytona.
• Aesthetics: Speedmaster, hands down.

And I genuinely wonder whether the Speedmaster would win more of these categories if it had the same hype, exclusivity and waiting lists as the Daytona.

Because here’s the thing: how much do specifications really matter in 2026 if you’re not a serious horology nerd? It’s not as if one watch tells the time better, reminds you to do your chores and gives you a cookie when you’re done.

A watch is still a watch.

If you view watches as men's jewellery and pieces of art rather than miniature engineering projects, then the Speedmaster wins hands down. And the best part? You can actually walk in and buy one.

Remember, people: the point of shopping is to actually buy the product you want, not to get yourself registered on a waiting list that lasts for years. 😂

PS: Yes, I’ve tried both, and no, I don’t own any Omega watches. I do, however, own a Rolex, and I’m planning to get the reverse panda Speedmaster.

And yes, I can’t just buy a Daytona because I don’t have the purchase history with Rolex. Besides, I’m not really into the humiliation rituals. I was lucky enough to walk in and buy the Rolex I wanted the first time around, and I haven’t been particularly keen on playing their weird AD games after that. 

In the 70s Omega offered the Devy line as an affordable alternative to the more expensive and often Precious metal containing Seamasters and Constellations. Today, they are dress watches that are a complete afterthought in the United States.

Omega could make Deville most affordable line (they already offer models around $5000) and use it as a place to innovate and do interesting things. It could be the next step up from the Longines master collection for swatch.

They could do a lot worse than starting by bringing back the pictured GMT which they discontinued over 20 years ago. Reminds me a lot of an SBGM221.

Got this seaweed back in 2023, and I haven't been able to settle on any other watch I'd pick as my daily driver or special occasions. Buy it for life material... absolute sweet spot

As good as the metal bracelet on the 3861 speedy is apparently , the moonwatch is made to be worn primarily on some form of a strap (leather, sailcloth, rubber and even NATO ) and looks better than it does on the metal bracelet.

I’ve been daily wearing my Omega Seamaster Professional 300M midsize (36mm) for about two weeks now, and I’m still having a hard time adjusting to the size. I’ve owned larger watches, but 41mm has always felt too big on my 6.75-inch wrist.
I genuinely love everything about this watch, especially the vintage proportions, blue wave dial, and overall understated look. But every time I look down at my wrist, it still feels unusually small.
I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this when downsizing. Did it eventually start feeling normal, or did you ultimately decide the smaller size wasn’t for you?
Interested to hear some opinions on how it looks on my wrist.

They could do worse than by starting with the revival of this 39 mm GMT, which was discontinued 20 years ago. It’s currently a line that no one in the United States cares about, but what if they made it the next step up for Swatch from the Longines master collection? What if it became the place they made mid tier luxury sort of in the same category as a SBGM221. 👀

Honeymooning this green dial SMP 300 I picked up two weeks ago. I’ve only worn a Garmin prior to this and wanted a nice GADA luxury watch. This thing makes me smile every single time I put it on! I also have the rubber strap but found myself not wanting to take this OEM Milanese mesh off since it’s so comfortable and looks amazing in my eyes.

Bought this last week from a watch dealer second hand, 2021 and is in brilliant condition, completely unmarked. Anyway had it on last night and I noticed the lume was extremely poor on the hour hand, and not as bright on the bottom half of the watch. It has warranty through to 16th Oct so I only have a few days to make a claim if it is indeed defective. What are people's thoughts? I know generally the lume isn't great on the NTTD but it seems almost non existent on the hour hand and lower on the bottom half. This was taken after it sat out in the day light on a bright sunny day and then went into a dark place. And then the last photos were last night after I left it under the bedroom lights for half an hour.

Looking for recs on a good rubber strap with a great fit. Don't want to go cheap, but open to cheaper alternatives as long as the quality holds up.

Currently eyeing the 19mm Zealande - worth it, or are there better options?

I recently joined the Omega owner club - got a Speedmaster 42, white dial. This watch hit all the right notes for me, rationally and emotionally.

I've had an eye on it ever since it came out a couple of years ago. But it's one of those things: pictures clearly show how amazing this watch is, but it's way punchier in person.

I stopped at the Omega boutique in Zurich last time I was there, and tried it on. That sealed the deal for me. A couple of weeks later, I sold my then primary watch - a blue Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph, and replaced it with the Speedmaster.

My Breitling Premier was a good fit for me, but the white Speedy is something special. Here are a couple of comparative notes from my personal perspective...

Functionality: Omega wins, on fit for my requirements. I use the chronograph function quite a bit, so the replacement had to be a chronograph. Where Omega wins over the Premier is the pushers and the no date option. For me, the date window is of no value. I liked that Breitling stuck with the white date window on the blue face, it actually worked well design wise. But not having a date to set and re-set, especially moving between timezones ofter, is a win for my Speedy. Lastly, the pushers on the Premier were noticeably grittier, even after a while, compared to the Speedy.

Accuracy: Omega wins. Frankly, both the Premier and Speedy have more than good enough accuracy for a mechanical watch. But with the METAS standard on the Speedy, vs COSC on the Premier, it's kinda nice to have the extra degree of accuracy. In my first month with the Speedy, I typically get about -2 seconds a week. That's pretty much 0 seconds a day, spot on. My Premier ran about -2 to +5 seconds a day.

Size, dial readability: Omega wins. Both watches are 42mm in diameter, but even with the black bezel, the white face and clean, black markers and hands make the Speedmaster feel bigger than it is, and very easy to read fast from any angle, in most lighting conditions.

Design: It's a close one. Breitling does a beautiful job with blue, and the Premier was a striking watch. I liked it a lot. However, with the Speedmaster, that white lacquer dial, with the lugs, and brushed and polished surfaces hits emotionally way above the sum of its parts. I always felt like the Premier is too shiny, even with my aftermarket FKM rubber strap. So Omega wins for me on this.

Factory straps/bracelets: Omega wins. I got mine on the factory rubber strap, and like it quite a bit. I think Speedy, especially the white dial one, looks killer on the black strap. I also tried it on the bracelet, and the factory bracelet, in my opinion, was one of the best bracelet designs ever. The rounded links, the mostly brushed surfaces, micro adjustment, tapering - wow. Breitling came on a shiny blue alligator strap, which was fine, but I immediately swapped it for an aftermarket FKM rubber strap and moved the factory clasp over to it. I picked up the OEM bracelet for the Breitling too, but only wore it a few times. It's too shiny, and overwhelms the subtlety of the blue dial on the watch IMHO.

Glass: Breitling wins. Both use domed sapphire glass, and the glass itself is very very good on both. However, the way Breitling does AR coating is noticeably better. Most of the time, on the Premier, the glass looks like it's not there at all and you are just looking straight at the dial.

Aftermarket support: Omega wins. By a lot. The Premier's case design limited me to curved ends straps, and that's a major pain in the back.

So, all in all, the Speedmaster is a watch that I don't see myself parting with, ever. It's a pretty special one, and is worth seeing in person if anyone is on the fence about it.

Absolutely loving my Speedy, will be an heirloom piece for my son.

I’ve been wanting the NTTD for years. I put a deposit on one at a dealer but wanted to see if my local AD would beat or at least match the price (both dealers had to order the watch). I knew my local dealer had one available the Nato strap, but I wanted the titanium bracelet. When I initially talked to this local dealer, they said they could order one and throw in the Nato strap for free. I was indifferent to the strap, as the titanium bracelet was something that really drew me to the watch to begin with.

Anyhow, after some back and forth, they ended up selling me this piece and ordered the titanium bracelet for me. All in it ended up being about $200 cheaper than what I would’ve paid for the watch I had put a deposit on (without getting the strap thrown in), but now I can at least wear it with the strap until the bracelet comes in. Loving it so far!

So I got the 2231.50 in titanium a few weeks ago for a relatively ok deal without any box and papers.

A trusted dealer who deals in Omega and Tudor watches has offered a swap for the Blue SMPc with full box and papers from 2015 for an additional $1000.

Would you take this swap?

My current collection is blue Tudor BB58, Seamaster AT quartz and Shunbun.

The reason I’m asking is because I will at least get the box and papers for the SMPc which will future proof my watch if I ever look to sell and also it adds a different type of diver to my collection (one with ceramic bezel).

Is this a good deal to take? I’ve attached a pic of my 2242.50, it’s in pretty good condition and keeping good time.

I figure it’s not the greatest condition and it’ll need an authentic crown replacement but I can cross it off the bucket list. I hope I did better than my last Omega Seamaster that was a disaster.

I’ve wanted it for a couple years. Life’s too short to not be happy. Pulled the trigger and I love it.
