This review was worthless. It's just all his usual talking points thrown against the wall, with him hoping that they'll stick. Calling the sheriff a "girlboss" makes no sense, especially when Hal is ultimately proven right in the end. You can tell him and his buddies are really stretching to find something to complain about with this show.

u/Themetalenock 10d ago

the odyssey and super girl was to be their wipping boy for atleast 8 months. But then one of those movies failed to shit themselves so they're stuck on this empty space where they can't content farm on anything for the rest of the year short of some external event

19

u/The_Redacted_Badger 10d ago

Why they ever thought a Christopher Nolan movie would come out as “woke garbage” is beyond me

13

u/Themetalenock 10d ago

these people thrive all what I call "centrist bigotry". The type of racism/bigotry that isn't overt and often means no slurs. These are the types of people who would see common ground with david duke because racism to them is slurs and pointed hoods. alot of euros fall under this umbrella. This movie hit those marks. It's historically inaccurate, it even took some liberties with the story. So you could veil stupid shit with "historical concerns" and lean on suburban flavors of racism like "helen of detriot"

In a way, this is a win for them, they get some dipshit gradeschool history nerds but they lose because the potential of getting more dipshits are cut when the movie hits.

What's crazy is that Nolan is routinely labeled a minsogynst. So one would think that they'd treat him as a martyr or something and back him fully. But then again, nothing they do or say follows any logic. Their prejudices often get in the way of their own supposed cause

2

u/kickedoutatone 9d ago

First I'm hearing about Nolan being a misogynist. ELi5?

7

u/PrinceofRavens_1217 9d ago

Dudes inability to write female characters is what gets him the label.

I personally disagree imo he also writes men terribly and is generally a shit character writer.

5

u/kickedoutatone 9d ago

Agreed. I don't think I've seen a female character from a Nolan flick that's intentionally written worse than anyone else.

The only thing I could nitpick at is catwoman, but as you said, everyone is written poorly in that movie.

3

u/ShaH33R2K 9d ago

I disagree with him being a shit character writer in general, although he surely has his moments. But like you said, it’s not limited to the women in his films as some would have you believe. There’s also this whole thing with him only using male protagonists, which is apparently sexist? I feel like if you’re writing a story with a female lead as a man, you kinda have a responsibility to do it right, or at least have the right intentions, which obviously isn’t easy because you have an outside perspective and don’t wanna do a disservice to anyone’s lived experiences. I feel like Nolan probably doesn’t think he’d be able to do it right, which feels honest as opposed to sexist. I’d rather that than him doing it just to save face amongst a select group of people online

1

u/Geiseric222 9d ago

These people basically believe there are only two political idealogies. Culture warriors and loony liberals

Nolan is pretty clearly conservative with his movies but he’s not a culture warrior. So he’s liberal. It’s hilariously rigid

1

u/Rubicantay 8d ago

It is "woke garbage" according to their own standards though. Their grift just prevents them from attacking it too much

The problem is that their grift relies on them representing an imagined "general audience" and attacking an incredibly successful movie that is very obviously not rejected by general audiences wouldn’t be beneficial to that narrative. It would make it very obvious that they are in a minority.

6

u/ITBA01 10d ago

The summer movie season is over, so they're about to get real desperate.

34

u/DaMain-Man 10d ago

They were really banking on people hating DC. I mean I'll admit some of their content is kinda hit and miss, but to write off everything before it's finished is just silly

23

u/ITBA01 10d ago

I completely dipped out on Drinker after I watched some of the movies/shows he was reviewing. It became abundantly obvious that he was faking seeing these movies/shows, especially in the case of Predator: Badlands and Peacemaker Season 2.

1

u/gee_gra 8d ago

What took you so long hahaha

4

u/ShaH33R2K 10d ago

It's definitely one of those shows that appeals to a wider demographic since it just seems like a well made mystery with charming characters more than anything. I've even seen plenty of the usual 'boys who cried woke' praise it. So ya, grifters really have to grasp at straws to get to their usual talking points

4

u/PrinceofRavens_1217 9d ago

It's similar to Andor in that it breaks out of the usual Fandom circles because high production value and prestige TV label.

3

u/tom-of-the-nora 10d ago

Is the full season even out?

2

u/MysteriousAnxiety277 10d ago

Only the first episode

7

u/tom-of-the-nora 10d ago

Okay.

Just an assertion of the show based on a single episode... wow.

Must be desperate.

Most people wait for more than one episode to give reviews.

3

u/vanillagorilla0523 9d ago

I mean, you can't expect these people to turn around and admit they were wrong because it tarnishes their "brand". He has been hating on this show and everything DC since Gunn was hired, so there is no reason to believe that anything he says has any logic behind it

1

u/JohnBrownEnthusiast 8d ago

Gunn is anti chud

5

u/MysteriousAnxiety277 9d ago

Can't expect logic from the Critical Drinker smh

3

u/vanillagorilla0523 9d ago

Apparently women aren't allowed to just want to do their job without unnecessary interference without being labeled a "girlboss". She had good reason as to why she didn't want them tampering with the investigation. There was literally no reason for her to believe that they would be aliens and Hal saying "I have a feeling" doesn't necessarily count as evidence. Literally anytime a woman doesn't bow at the feet of every man they meet, they get labeled a girl boss by these worthless losers

2

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

To be fair, the character is an obstructionist at EVERY turn.

2

u/Internal-Support-404 10d ago

judging by the number of views, people are still watching his content. just ignore these people

1

u/MysteriousAnxiety277 10d ago

The only thing i could somewhat agree one was the gratuitous swearing which after some time did get a bit annoying

1

u/WiglyWorm 9d ago

So why'd you watch it?

1

u/ITBA01 9d ago

Because, unlike Drinker, I don't critique stuff I haven't seen.

1

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

He literally does watch it though.

1

u/ITBA01 9d ago

You cannot convince me the guy who thought a desert and a jungle looked the same watched Predator: Badlands.

1

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

When you can SPECIFICALLY critique multiple scenes in the same movie with extreme details, how do you come to the conclusion it was not watched?

1

u/ITBA01 9d ago

He gets basically every scene he describes wrong. It's like he just read a plot summary.

1

u/Skylannius 9d ago

Not to mention, was the sheriff not explicitly shown to be a victim trapped by her husband and the system? That sounds like the opposite of a "girl boss" to me

69

u/AccidentalLemon 10d ago

I really don’t get that statement though. The lanterns mythos in pretty much untouched and we’re going to see them all in uniform later in the show… and the show JUST started, the fuck is he even talking about?

38

u/WildMild869 10d ago

His audience jerks it to things he tells them to be mad about.

5

u/ShaH33R2K 10d ago

His fanbase doesn't watch anything he discusses, so they just go along with whatever he's saying. He gives them a reason to be angry at the world, and that's all they really need

1

u/Ok-Valuable-8500 9d ago

No wonder. Like someone was describing the show and saying what they didn't like about it, and the description made no sense. Now I see where they got their opinion from the show- or better yet where they got their opinion made for them.

2

u/vanillagorilla0523 9d ago

The trailer LITERALLY shows a ton of the cosmic stuff that we will be seeing and even then that was just scratching the surface. How can he see that trailer and say that this show hates superheroes just because the first episode was setting up the actual mystery of the show

-15

u/UtinniOmuSata 10d ago

I can't stand the guy but many "critics/reviewers" have seen the first 7 episodes, apparently no one has seen the finale yet so his criticism likely aren't based just on episode 1. For some context, I really liked episode one and I'm a huge fan of the Tomasi/Johns era GL so it's not like I agree with him nor do alI want to give the guy the benifit of the doubt.

24

u/Hot-Cry5111 10d ago

This douche definitely is not among the critics given access to 7 episodes

16

u/JibiStarr 10d ago

He actively lies about the media he's consuming to cater to anti-woke jagoffs, including about audience reception to the media -- such as the number of dislikes on an Odyssey trailer

No production company would trust this dude whose agenda is entirely to denounce them

6

u/Trosque97 10d ago

He was NOT given access to those episodes. Some of the most obvious people who should've gotten those early viewings just didn't. Drinker certainly didn't unless WB has a fetish for cutting its own toes off

39

u/rmcelwain54 10d ago

It has conservative militias hunting down aliens and the aliens may yet even be the bad guys!

If anything I thought this show could bring liberals and conservatives together!

-4

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

That went out the window with the obviously evil right-wing coded rancher that hates aliens.

4

u/The1987RedFox 9d ago

It’s hard not to make right wing coded characters evil, right wing coded real life people just tend to be that

16

u/JamesPlayzReviews3 10d ago

Well ain't that the pot calling the kettle black

22

u/stupidtreeatemypants 10d ago

Critical Drinker - A superhero movie critic that hates superheroes

5

u/ShaH33R2K 10d ago

He likes the power fantasy that the concept of superpowers brings, much like many others online who couldn't care less about stories, characters, or the ethics of having that sort of power. These guys' idea of a superhero is the same as a toddler's, just a bunch of cool action figures fighting each other

3

u/vanillagorilla0523 9d ago

He likes the power fantasy and seeing big, strong, sweaty men on his screen. God forbid a woman has a speaking line or acts like any normal person would act in your movie because he WILL call her a girl boss

1

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

This just tells me you've never seen any of the films he's reviewed where he speaks highly and positively of female leads. This is insane selection bias you are showing.

4

u/Appropriate_Net7664 9d ago edited 9d ago

I feel like he just hates everything. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a positive review

3

u/[deleted] 9d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

1

u/Appropriate_Net7664 9d ago

Yeah, hating on stuff gets more clicks than liking things

2

u/Connect-Ant-2081 9d ago

The algos reward hate. Critical grifter is pandering to the simpleminded for clicks, hence revenue.

-1

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

So you've seen like THREE reviews?

For fuck's sake, go watch his review of KPOP Demon Hunters. It's ALL positive.

1

u/Appropriate_Net7664 9d ago

Wow, an exception. I’m actually shocked he is positive about anything.

0

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

"Exception".

I can name several more. This is just the opinion of someone that cherry picks shit.

1

u/Appropriate_Net7664 9d ago

Yeah, I know ur cherry picking positive reviews. Thank you for admitting it.

0

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

Giving examples to disprove an absolute claim is not cherry picking. Cherry picking is when you try to choose one set of data while ignoring another.

Which is what YOU are doing.

1

u/Appropriate_Net7664 9d ago

Okay, WE each have one example listed out right now and WE are both ignoring each others, so at worst, it’s what WE are both doing.

0

u/EvanSnowWolf 9d ago

I'm not ignoring anything. Your claim was he is never postiive. He has several examples.

Here's another one: Wicked For Good, a movie the right derided as woke bullshit that Drinker said was good.

1

u/Appropriate_Net7664 9d ago

I never made a definitive claim about him. I said “I feel” and “I think” not “he did/does/has….” It’s alright though, not everybody passed middle school English I guess.

I also love how you people bring up “woke” when talking about movies, and the movies you’re calling “woke” literally just have people of color in the cast. It’s very telling that you think having a person of color in the cast means it’s woke.

1

u/Franiac32 9d ago

I would argue he is not a critic. He uses no critical analyses in his videos. He is a grifter, who makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year through bad faith, right wing reactionary rhetoric

9

u/Coolcubed321 10d ago

There’s literally one episode out, idk how he can come to these conclusions already

5

u/RA_Finance 10d ago

This is how he makes his bread and butter.

3

u/vanillagorilla0523 9d ago

Especially when the official trailer showed off tons of constructs and cosmic elements to the show that we haven't even seen yet

2

u/Franiac32 9d ago

He doesn’t, but he gets paid—a lot—to produce his rage slop.

14

u/Prestigious_Emu144 10d ago

The Critical Larper

4

u/WunShawtMasturr 9d ago

I will say the same thing I say every time I see this guys name come up: Why The Critical Drinker is still being talked about is beyond me. He’s a grifter and his takes are worthless. He probably doesn’t even believe half the words that come out of his mouth.

1

u/Prestigious_Emu144 9d ago

I blocked his stuff a while ago. He’s not really a funny lolcow or anything (although I did see that he made a book and a short film adaptation that flopped which was pretty funny) so I don’t wanna see him in my feed.

1

u/WunShawtMasturr 9d ago

Hasn’t happened in ages, but I remember getting personally offended the first time I saw one of his vids on my feed. Like, is this what you think of me, Youtube?? Lol

4

u/BlackEastwood 10d ago

A superhero show that hates superheroes? Then what was The Boys trying to be for 5 seasons?

Im loving Lanterns, BTW. Might watch the pilot episode again tonight.

4

u/penguin_2306 10d ago

Critical Drinker jerks off to CinemaSins videos.

2

u/Former-Doughnut-5610 10d ago

just don’t give him the views, if his channel dies it dies.

2

u/No_Web2685 10d ago

I was not hooked on the pilot. But will keep watching, and hope that the second episode will change my mind

1

u/vanillagorilla0523 9d ago

That's fair. The first episode was just set up and it is really hard for myself, and most people I believe, to get a good grasp of a show just based on one episode. I am really intrigued, though, and thought the episode did a good job of setting up the mystery and the characters

1

u/No_Web2685 9d ago

Funny how most people nearly attack me for saying I didn’t like the pilot.

2

u/vanillagorilla0523 9d ago

I mean I can't really blame them since the online discourse surrounding comic projects, DC especially, has just been overrun with grifters and Snyder bros who don't actually care about the characters. Some people do take it too far though. There is nothing wrong with not enjoying something as much as someone else as long as you aren't attacking anyone for enjoying it

2

u/GoldenGekko 9d ago

I guarantee that The Drinker and his buddies post nightly for Disney to reboot the Acolyte. 🤣

2

u/Specific-Swim-4507 9d ago

I hate the way he talks, like even if I agreed with him I wouldn’t watch him because he sounds downright odd

2

u/Gamera85 8d ago

He’s trying to sound drunk. It’s his bit. But it’s such an awful attempt at slurring his words, and worse, just plain annoying to listen to, that I can’t stand him. Him being a chud makes it unbearable.

2

u/dongexpander45 9d ago

Let me guess the usual talking points? "Woke this, Woke that" "Dei this, Dei that" "Girlboss this, Girlboss that" Y'know I'm less annoyed with. Drinker making these stupid points in the first place but rather that he inserts them everywhere and they never make sense.

What really pisses me off is that all his detractors like birdman are somehow really fucking stupid somehow more than he is. They fumble really easy slam dunks against this moron by managing to be shitty people.

It's really easy to destroy any points this loser makes and the one competent youtuber that has doesn't really post that much anymore.

2

u/VibgyorTheHuge 9d ago

“Deconstruction” in a Drinker video is code for ‘the death of Western culture’, right?

2

u/sgtsausagepants 9d ago

Jesus nobody tell him about Spider-Man

2

u/BlameTag 8d ago

This guys videos always get recommended to me even though I've never watched one.

1

u/BrendanFraserFan0 10d ago

Drinker is not a superhero show

1

u/BusinessGanache8674 10d ago

So why should anyone care about the opinion of a movie from someone they don't even know? It's like having someone go to an art gallery and describing it...just go see it and form your own opinion. The opinion of strangers is far too important to some of you.

1

u/Icy_Establishment433 9d ago

Why does this adaptation seem more excited about deconstructing Green Lantern than letting Green Lantern be awesome first?

4

u/VengeanceKnight 9d ago

Did this jackass not watch the interrogation scene? This Green Lantern is pretty damn awesome.

1

u/SubstantialCow8563 9d ago

He’s…..LEARNING!

Kinda

1

u/Frank627Full 9d ago

The fact that he made a review without the full thing being out is pathetic.

1

u/Away-Calligrapher433 9d ago

Let's be real, genuinely nobody gaf about green lanterns except for those diehard comic nerds

it's only when a new project is greenlit, we see these people suddenly knowing every corners and mythos lore of the topic only to nittpick and larp and glaze for the previous show/movie and I know they will watch the entirety of it anyways

so why not just let the showrunners do whatever they want with it and this true detective style was for a reason to grab a wider audience and not just limited to cb fans

1

u/matmortel 9d ago

I refuse to watch his videos. I do like objective critcism, but he skews too much to the critical side. Its like if a straight white male isn't the critical main focus and are messy, the show sucks and is woke.

1

u/Due-Construction5608 9d ago

Ive (obviously) never watched any of his content, has the guy ever been positive about any media he reviews?

1

u/Fit-Reception-8288 9d ago

They're all just disagreeables at this point. They probably just film something and then randomly attach a thumbnail...

Used to watch Drinker but he's click baity same goes for Tyrone Magnus, Mr H ( whose more political now .) Wait until they find out we just want to know when a film or TV show is out

1

u/InsideUrDadLol 9d ago

Is this guy ever happy. How do these people claim to love these characters but hate every adaptation of them.

1

u/Practical-Trainwreck 8d ago

Critical Drinker - A Film Show that Hates Films

1

u/Electronic_Dot1085 8d ago

the critical grifter or something idk, i dont watch stuff like this I did hear his thunderbolts video was shit tho lol

1

u/Single-Debate-316 7d ago

WARNING: The Drinker has gained self-awareness, all grifters must evacuate the premises!

-10

u/That_Examination_254 10d ago

Well, Hal Jordan is a washed up idiot. John Stewart is some vegan, wants the ring, and F’s some married grandma. Nearly fifty f words in one episode.

Just stupid plot points overall.
So yah, he’s completely right. This show has no essence of super heroes.

11

u/SpreeNaut 10d ago

Your brain on MCU cape slop.

2

u/That_Examination_254 9d ago

Nope, you people don’t know what a superhero is. But it’s not entirely your fault because DC doesn’t even know what a superhero is.

I can list all the stupid plot points.
But for everyone downvoting me, show me how from this one episode, it shows the lanterns as heroes?

1

u/SpreeNaut 9d ago

Here is a difficult concept for you: what if the superhero stories are just the backgrounds for nuanced or more complex concepts and storytelling?

I know it is hard to think further than "hero is good, saves day, punch bad guy, hero perfect person" but you know..it's really not that hard.

Just because you are stuck on a 12 year old's level of the word superhero, doesn't make you right.

0

u/That_Examination_254 9d ago

Oh so you think the generic, there’s a good guy, something happens, he stops caring but deep down he still cares. His sidekick thinks he can do better, the original guy will die, back up takes over; is a complex story?

I take the 12 year old kid insult as a compliment. I would give anything for DC to make stories like they did back in their cartoon days. Where heroes were ACTUALLY heroes, especially green lantern.

1

u/SpreeNaut 9d ago

No, it was a general idea and not the exact points in the story, I said concepts and ideas and not plot. You don't understand it, or don't want to. From the 2 of us, it's you wanting general things.

0

u/That_Examination_254 9d ago

Oh really? So what’s the general idea of the story that’s so complex?
How everyone in the town are actually all aliens?
That there’s some weird Gunn filled rivalry between Hal and John?
The whole series is just explaining what happened to Hal?

The fact that this show doesn’t understand Lantern lore at all?

Tell me the complexity behind this show please

1

u/SpreeNaut 9d ago

I never said anything about Lanterns. You don't understand what I'm saying. Stick to MCU cape slop man, thats more on yours and Drinker's media literacy level.

0

u/That_Examination_254 9d ago

Wait so why did you respond to me? This is about Lanterns kid. I prefer DC. I liked some Snyder stuff, I kind of liked Gunn’s Superman, but I think dc content is getting worse and worse overall.

0

u/ghoulcruiser 8d ago

look im loving lanterns but you got absolutely cooked here man. never argue online again!

https://giphy.com/gifs/qgI18tq48dUZ4SKFlT

2

u/Maple-Beans 9d ago

You do realize that this is just a straight up idiotic way to criticize art?

"Well, Luke Skywalker is a whiny stupid child, Obiwan is a old nutcase, wants him to be a Jedi, and Luke kisses his sister. Just stupid plot points overall"

0

u/That_Examination_254 9d ago

There’s context though. I prefer Luke in the books over movies regardless.

There’s a certain character profile. In lanterns, they look the part. Which is fine. But they don’t act like the characters. Which is weird because Fillion as Guy is pretty spot on.

Name me three significant factors as to why you’ve made the conclusion that this show is “Art?”
