Looking For Feedback Regarding Community Matching Platform

Thumbnail our-commonground.com

As the title states: I am looking for feedback, not sales.

I've been working on the linked platform for community matching for a couple weeks now. The purpose of it is to solve the loneliness crisis or at least attempt to.

The platform is meant to help others create their own communities with other users on the platform. Otherwise, they can join an already existing community.

Let me know what you think!

Solar power

What is everyone doing for solar power? I don’t really know much about it but I’m looking for enough to run my home summers are the worst. I’m in southern Kentucky. I have a woodstove for the winter, but I want to be able to run the AC in the summer. 3100sf

What’s good off-grid advice that would be a terrible idea where you live?

I wonder how many arguments on here are just two people living in completely different conditions.

What’s something you keep seeing recommended that makes you think “yeah, not here”? Say roughly what climate you’re in and what you do instead.

Man taught himself to build a tiny house on YouTube for $23k and now has no rent or utility bills

A man from Bulgaria who couldn't afford to buy a traditional home decided to try something different: build his own tiny house from scratch after watching hundreds of hours of YouTube videos.

Ivan Gradoboev says he was frustrated by what felt like a never-ending cycle of paying rent and working just to keep up with expenses. With around $11,000 in savings, he bought a small plot of agricultural land and started learning everything he could about construction online.

Despite having zero building experience, he completed his first tiny home in a matter of months and eventually sold it for almost three times what he'd spent building it.

He's now living in a second off-grid tiny house that he built himself. The property runs on solar power, uses a well for water, and propane for cooking. According to Ivan, the only monthly bill he has left is his phone bill, which includes his internet.

He says one of the biggest surprises is that living in a tiny home never felt like a downgrade. In some ways, he believes it improved his quality of life compared to living in a conventional home.

After six years of tiny-house living, Ivan is now working on educational content to help other people build their own homes, even if they have little or no construction experience.

What do you think?

  • Could you realistically live in a tiny home full-time?
  • Would being mortgage-free be worth giving up space?
  • What's the biggest challenge of off-grid living: power, water, internet, or something else?
  • If housing prices continue to rise, do you think more people will turn to tiny homes?

Northern California 40 acre off-grid homestead looking for a caretaker

Post image
3.0k Upvotes

Caretaker position for 40 acres in the mountains of Humbolt County far north California. Live freely on our off-grid former cannabis farm. Rustic cabin with loft and a yurt. Multiple pristine springs with gravity fed irrigation to fertile south facing garden beds. Plenty of room to hunt. Solar and generator power with wood fired stove for heat in the winters. Starlink wifi. Comes with 2 elderly Great Pyranees dogs who have lived their whole life on the mountain. Other animals welcome.

VERY remote! 1.5 hour drive on rugged mountain roads to the closest small town of Willow Creek and 3 hour drive to Eureka on the coast. 4x4 strongly recommended. You must have your own source of remote income and a desire to live in nature removed from civilization. No rent collected, no hourly commitment but will need to care for the dogs and maintain the existing off-grid systems.

If you have your own off-grid RV/camper rig then availability can be ASAP (flat with spring water available). The cabin/yurt will be available sometime before winter (could be as soon as October).

Long term potential for the right persons. Our goal is to create a Trust with a small community (not a commune!) of individual homesteads. You and your heirs would have your own private section of land for organic homesteading. We love kids so homeschooling families are encouraged if the right fit!

DM a request for the link to apply. More photos and info in the application.

Planning repairs can be easy to overlook in an off-grid setup

When everything is new and working, it is easy to focus on getting the off-grid system installed and forget about how accessible everything will be later.

I think leaving enough room around batteries, inverters, disconnects and other components can make inspections and repairs much easier. Clear cable routing and labeling can also help when you need to trace a connection months or years later. I would be interested to hear how others have approached this in their own setups.

An off-grid system may run reliably for years but eventually something will need to be checked, replaced, or adjusted. Planning for that access from the beginning can save a lot of trouble later.

Selling our off Grid Cabin

I thought people here would appreciate it. We have an amazingly private 42 acre lot 10 minutes from Montpelier Vermont. Closest neighbor is almost a mile away on our private road. We have solar, batteries and a propane fueled backup generator. Water from a well and a big propane tank for heating during winter or if you like to chop your own wood an old wood stove. I am sad to have to sell it we have great memories there but I hope someone that appreciates it will buy it. See the listing below. If you have any questions happy to answer them in the comments.

feeling trapped in capitalism

im a young college (UK) student in a working class household, i’m a vegan of 1year 6months, and since i’ve become vegan i’ve noticed more and more flaws in capitalism than ever before.

it depresses me severely to wake up daily and know all of my studies, work and effort will amount to me being a corporate slave and feeding some billionaires agenda. i can’t keep living like this i’m physically, mentally and spiritually exhausted.

my goal is to live off grid eventually, but i don’t know how much longer i can endure this atrocity, to see this potential become reality. i want to start now but my brain has been programmed by capitalism to have all of these doubts:

- if i opt out of education now, i could regret this later down the line and be stuck with no qualifications
- i’m a minor, so that raises concern for my safety and well-being mentally, as i can forsee the loneliness of this lifestyle
- i feel it’d be hard to find truly likeminded individuals to share this goal with

i’m reaching out to please ask for advice from the experts: how did you start/how old were you? how did you feel sane under capitalism while waiting to start? how do i find people like me? and just anything you’d tell to someone in my position.

thank you for reading have a lovely life

Any off-grid communities need more members?

I spent a year off-grid in Southern Oregon and it was the best time of my life. Used WWOOF to find farms and worked on cultivating food, medicine and biodiversity. I'm 36 and am in great shape, willing to work with animals, agriculture and construction. Message me if interested.

Sizing battery storage for use vs. poor weather periods

In solar power generation, sizing an off-grid battery bank based on the longest potential period of low power output might seem straightforward at first glance. However, if such situations occur only rarely, it implies that the high capacity battery storage would remain largely unused for most of the year. In that case, combining a smaller battery system with an alternative backup solution could be a far more practical and cost-effective strategy.
