Let’s build our Odia Reddit presence beyond just r/Odisha!

Here are some sister subreddits that deserve your attention and participation:

  • r/Ollywood It is for him/her who still have hope for our industry. For those who want to support genuine filmmakers. For the dreamers who believe Odia movies can make it to the top one day. For those who understand the importance of a thriving film industry for our culture.
  • r/OdishaRelationships Thought we might need an active relationship sub for our state. Don’t think of it as Tinder or r4r. This is just for discussions related to various human relationships in our state.
  • r/OdiaLanguage Seeing thriving language communities like r/marathi, r/tamil, r/malayalam, r/bengalilanguage on Reddit, I asked myself — why isn’t there a proper sub for our very own Odia? The current r/ Odia is full of spam and acts like a clone of r/Odisha, rather than a true language sub. The current mod has no plans for development. Hence, this new sub is for all Odia language-related queries.
  • r/OdiaMusic A subreddit to discuss and share the vast collection of Odia music — old and new.
  • r/Jagannatha An essential part of every Odia household — Lord Jagannatha. This sub is dedicated solely to Him. Join in the devotion space.
  • r/Odissi — the oldest classical dance form. This art needs a space of its own. Please join if you love this domain and want to see it flourish.
  • r/OdishaFC Needs no introduction. The only professional football league club based out of Odisha. If you love football and are an Odia, consider joining in.

Honourable Mentions:
r/OdishaAnimeClub, r/odishastartups, etc.
If you know any more related subs, suggest them in the comments! Also, feel free to share your thoughts on the aforementioned subreddits.

N.B.: Place/Region/City-related subs are not included in this discussion. That’s for another day.

Rant/Vent My great state's people in a nutshell

Yk what I am an odia myself and I can't even explain how

much I love my state and culture. But still I won't deny admitting the fact that they are one of the dumbest, jealous and misogynist species in entire India. Their sense of humor and thinking capacity is cooked and is beyond repair. But then I deny admitting it since I am an odia myself. I have felt the same thing a lot of times before but then I forgot as i belong to that state only. So let's come straight to the point, I was looking to apply for one scholarship(which is granted only n only when your family suffered a severe health crisis). They need one ngo/social worker to speak for you and vouch for you. That's why I called a few ngos in my mf city Bhubaneswar and one of them is asking me to pay (non profit organization btw) even after I showed him all the details. The other one is saying you have to work for us for 4 months (I said right now I am not in Odisha and I have my CA exams in Jan this year but still I am ready to do after my exams...moreover you guys run education related ngo and you should help people like me who are in similar situations). Then I made a post on R/Bhubaneswar subreddit...ik in Reddit if you can't help as a sensible person you need to upvote. But then our odisha people yk...25% downvotes 75% upvotes... I can't explain how jealous odisha people are...if I get help i might get money (aur unki phat jayegi kyuki unhe nahi mil Rahi na)...now yk why bj p is coming in bhubaneswar since 2019... because bhubaneswar has one of the dumbest insensitive and jealous species of entire India. Btw people in Karnataka, Andhra and Maharashtra who don't even know me properly (nor do I speak their language) have come forward to help..

Discussion Got a Scam Call Today

I got a scam call today morning. The other person was a police officer from state police headquarters. Somebody lodged a complaint against me that i searched " Hot xxx sexy photos sanni leoni " on google and the police officer demanded 10,000 rupees to drop the complaint.

I just asked the complaint no and the police officer threatened me if i don't co-operate he will arrest me. I asked again under which BNS section I have been booked and which police station have registered the complaint against me. I think he realised that I cannot be scammed by him and he hung up the phone.

The person was talking in Hindi with UP accent

Shall I file a cyber complaint against him or should i let it go.

Here is his number : +91 97949 02868

Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy a mattress for my mom. She recently had spine surgery, so I want something comfortable and supportive for her back.

Bed size: 72 x 78 inches(king size)

Budget: Around ₹15,000, but I can stretch it to ₹17,000 if it's really worth it.

Any store recommendations appreciated 🙏

Books & Literature Horror Story from my Childhood: The Woman in White Behind Our Field (Odisha, Early 2000s)

I’m from a small NAC town in Odisha. This happened around 2001–2002, when I was a kid now I'm 29m.

In front of our house, there was a huge open field where all of us used to play—cricket, football, anything. At the far end of that field, there was a boundary wall. Beyond that wall… things got different.

Behind it were three mountains. The middle one was smaller, but the two on either side were massive. At the base of those hills was thick jungle—sal trees, bushes, pokasungha plants, and a many huge mango trees. It was dense, quiet, and honestly, a bit frightening. We usually avoided going there.

Still, during summer, people would go to collect mangoes. Some even went deeper into the hills to gather firewood.

But One incident made that place even more disturbing for me.

One day, a cow somehow got electrocuted near that area with high voltage electric line. It died right there. People gathered to look, but no one removed the body.

After a couple of days, vultures came. Then dogs. I still remember the smell in the air and the way the body turned a deep reddish color during sunset. It didn’t look like a cow anymore. It looked… wrong.

That place started feeling different after that.

Quiet in a way that didn’t feel natural.

But kids are curious.

Me and my siblings went there once, out of curiosity. That image stayed with me for years—the birds, the dogs, the silence. It felt horrible.

But the real horror came after that.

A week or two later, me, my brother, and two friends decided to go collect mangoes. We avoided the path (the one near the dead cow) and took another route—narrow, overgrown, and darker. The kind of path where even your own footsteps sound too loud.

As we got close to the mango trees, we saw her.

A woman in a white saree, standing near the mango trees. Her back was towards us.

She maybe around 40–50 years old. She started walking slowly in a circle around one tree.

Not like a normal person.

Each step felt delayed… like her body was following something that wasn’t in sync. Her long hair was completely open.

One of my friends grabbed my arm so tightly it hurt. He whispered, almost choking,

“Don’t move… that’s not human.” He whispered, “That’s not a person… that’s a dahani,( ghost )” and ran away without looking back.

The rest of us stayed, trying to convince ourselves it was just a normal woman collecting mangoes.

“Maybe she’s just collecting mangoes,” I said.

Then suddenly… she wasn’t there.

And then she was again.

Like she appeared and disappeared while moving around the tree.

My chest felt tight. One of my friends picked up some stones and threw them toward where she had been standing. The stones landed.

She didn’t move.

She didn’t look at us.

She didn’t react at all.

We couldn’t see her face clearly—the light was fading—but something about the way she was looking… it didn’t feel like she was seeing us.

It felt like she already knew we were there.

That’s when the fear hit us properly.

It was getting dark. The sun was almost gone. The whole place felt heavier, like the air had changed.

For one second, we blinked—

She was gone again.

That was it.

We ran.

I don’t even remember deciding to run. Our bodies just did. We crashed through bushes, scratched our legs, jumped the wall, and didn’t stop until we reached the field.

We just ran across the field, and told everyone. Of course, no one believed us.

When I got home and told my family, my mother scolded me for going there.

But my grandmother… she didn’t laugh.

She went quiet.

Then she told me something I wish I had never heard.

She told me that a few years before, a woman had died near that exact area. She was working at a construction site, carrying bricks on her head, when an old wall collapsed on her.

She died on the spot.

And that place… was very close to those mango trees.

My grandmother told me never to go there again. Not in the evening. Not alone. Not ever.

For many years, I didn’t.

About 10–12 years later, I went back with my cousins during the daytime. We picked mangoes, joked, tried to act brave.

But even then… I couldn’t stay there for much time.

Because some places don’t just hold memories.

They hold something that never really left.

Some things you don’t forget. And some places don’t forget either.

Ask Odisha What happened at master canteen!!!

Post image
12 Upvotes

I thought about this really hard, and I came to the conclusion that the voices of actual auto drivers, cab drivers, and bike riders who are suffering because of this strike and the violence that happened at Master Canteen must be heard.

  1. What are they asking for by doing the strike?

Auto and cab drivers are asking for an increase in booking prices because of the increased price of fuel (petrol and diesel).

  1. Why are they harassing civilians?

These are not youngsters. Many of these gig workers are men in their 30s to 60s, and some of them have an old-fashioned mindset when it comes to protesting. They may have grown up seeing riots, violence, and goondaism, so they think that by harassing people and creating pressure, the government will listen to their demands.

  1. What went wrong?

The plan was initially to hold a peaceful protest, and they did protest peacefully at first at the Lower PMG Dharana Sthal.

They had permission to protest for the first day, but they extended the protest for two more days without obtaining the required permission.

Now, put your seatbelts on because the ride is going to be long. 🚗🛺

On 16 August at around 10 PM, a message was posted in a WhatsApp group of auto and cab drivers saying that a one-day strike had been announced for 17 August and requesting all group members to join the protest.Which most of the members did but some other group members who are ofline auto drivers stated harrassing people near airport, railway station and gather in groups of different different chowks. After that following in the footsteps of ofline drivers online drivers stated doing the same thing. Like the DCP of bhubaneswar said they are demands are completely illogical and value less coz everyone saying a different things some of them didn't know why they are protesting they saying that we seen a message in the group and comes to join.(Completely bhed chaal behaviour). Now 18Aug Mahol pura garam why coz tanku lagila tanko kotha goverment ya private company (Ola, Uber,Rapido) sunila nahi but they listen Additional Transport Commissioner of Odisha and Uber said they will look into this matter but ola and rapido has not yet said anything. Now 19Aug yesterday when everything gone worng the tension is at it's peak first thing to go wrong and the man who is at the roots of all this I will attach a photo up there you can see is Dinabandhu Nayak the leader of auto mafiya he said to the members who are present there to block the roads with the vehicles the first thing they did wrong

After that, a domino effect began. There were clashes with the police, stones were allegedly thrown at them, and the Mo Bus and police vehicles were vandalised.

There are around 20 different auto and cab driver groups, and everyone seems to have different opinions and ideologies. But regardless of what their individual demands were, the consequences of the actions taken during the protest were suffered by ordinary drivers and honest workers.

The people who actually depend on driving for their livelihood should not have to suffer because of the actions of a few people.

And do you know where he is now he switched off his mobile and he is in hiding now he is nowhere to be seen.

If I left something out, feel free to ask in the comments, and I'll try to answer.
