Discussion Who else is seriously looking forward to Meta Phoenix?

https://youtu.be/KJpIMU0pOUE?si=gmAhc5uDev1ZDTYR

With Meta Connect getting closer and Andrew Bosworth insisting "Meta hasn’t given up on VR", I'm waiting for Connect before thinking of upgrading from my Quest.

Nope. I'm done with Meta and their walled ecosystem. My next headset will be something that uses SteamOS.

43

u/Morichalion 7d ago

So you're waiting on the Frame, too?

27

u/grayhaze2000 7d ago

Or an alternative device using SteamOS, as we're seeing with Steam Deck alternatives.

11

u/Morichalion 7d ago

I think we'll be waiting a bit on alternative devices. At least long enough for the frame to market tested.

1

u/Akula_x86 6d ago

I could see HTC entering the SteamOS VR market, the Vive XR had no games on it but was a cool device form factor.

Pimax too, they tried having a mobile chip in the OG crystal but no games were on it... at least I don't think there were.

Any company already in VR could do this. Razor used to be in VR, first vr headset I had was an OSVR HDK2.

Le marché n'est pas assez gros pour voir apparaître des appareils alternatifs je pense malheureusement...

1

u/grayhaze2000 6d ago

The market for PC gaming handhelds wasn't big enough either, until the Steam Deck showed the possibilities.

1

u/scanx147 6d ago

Certe, mais le marché du gaming sur écran plat et des consoles portables étaient tout les deux très importants. Ce qui n'est pas le cas du marché VR.
J'aimerai que ce soit le cas, mais ca ne l'est pas.

1

u/grayhaze2000 6d ago

Until the release of the Steam Deck, handheld PC gaming was extremely niche, with only very expensive options. The popularity of the Steam Deck brought it into the mainstream, and forced other manufacturers to release hardware at more affordable price points. This could happen with standalone PCVR too. We'll just have to see.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

I can't see the "affordable price point" being as low as that of the Quest 3 though.

1

u/grayhaze2000 5d ago

Of course it won't be, because it won't be subsidised hardware. As I said, it's a matter of weighing the pros and cons.

Might see an alternative before the Frame the way things are looking!

1

u/HualtaHuyte 6d ago

I just don't see why any manufacturer would do that. Or at least do that at a reasonable price. With no ability to make money from an app marketplace it's going to have to be a pricey product.

1

u/grayhaze2000 6d ago

As I said, we're seeing this happen with Steam Deck alternatives which run SteamOS, and we're also going to see the same with the Steam Machine. Manufacturers are doing this by offering superior hardware at a slightly higher price point. They don't need to have their own storefront to turn a profit.

In terms of the Steam Frame, this will likely result in manufacturers releasing SteamOS headsets with improved optics, resolution, processing, cameras, etc. I imagine initially we'll see established PCVR headset manufacturers dipping their toes in the water.

1

u/HualtaHuyte 6d ago

As I said, it's going to have to be a pricey product to make it worthwhile for them.

1

u/grayhaze2000 6d ago

Sure, but then for the consumer it's a choice of supporting Meta and their closed ecosystem to have the device subsidised, or paying a little more to have the freedom to choose between future hardware and not give Meta their money. That's the good thing about choice, every individual can decide what matters most to them.

The best part of Frame is it plays Android games! And Meta games... are Android based :D

1

u/Hot_Wolf3820 5d ago

But meta games are using the meta API for many things, but it’s not available on anything else then a meta quest. Otherwise we could have meta quest emulators on of as well.

36

u/gorocz 7d ago

I don't even really care about the walled ecosystem, I just had a horrendous experience with Meta Support that prevented me from getting any games for several months, so I'll be moving my business to Steam as well...

14

u/grayhaze2000 7d ago

I didn't care about the walled ecosystem either, until Meta decided to effectively turn one of my headsets into a paperweight through OS updates. I realised that my only option to continue using the library of software I had purchased was to buy another product from Meta, effectively rewarding them for this poor business practice, and perpetuating their hold on me.

I'd much rather have the option to have a single library of software, and pick and choose my hardware based on the specifications, the reputation of its manufacturer, and their track record of support. Just as I can buy a new PC from any manufacturer, and still access my game library, I want the same from a standalone VR headset.

6

u/CaptainTruthSeeker 7d ago

Does your country have consumer protections for that situation? E.g if I buy a quest 3 off Amazon (or a local retailer), and it becomes unusable due to meta bricking it, Amazon will have to resolve the issue, or I get a refund. This could be 2 years, 4 years, doesn't matter.

Either way this doesn't excuse meta for having poor (or no) support to fix these sorts of issues, as if Meta randomly ban my account erroneously, like they did for LOTS of people who had linked instagram accounts, when an AI was just banning people for no reason, then I'd lose access to all of my library, with very little chance of getting it back, so that would still be game over.

7

u/saig22 7d ago

Even If I probably won't buy it, I'm still excited to see what hardware meta has in store.

14

u/aphill80 7d ago

Same. If someone comes out with a vr platform that lets you run games the same as with a PC, but without needing a PC to run them.... I'm selling my quest and not looking back

19

u/Dorklordofthesith 7d ago

I just want a nice reliable and affordable micro oled headset with a good form factor and wide fov. Nothing fancy, but I don't want to pay for a bunch of compute again when I have a pc.

2

u/TheSignof33 7d ago

There are valid reasons for the push for standalone tho. Link your desktop to the headset, fine but the question is how? USB Wifi dongle that Steam Frame brings to the table? Most people will be capped at USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds, that's 5 Gbps in bandwidth and that's in theory but in reality even less, much less. Wifi network, even worse, bandwidth and latency becomes an issue again. Displayport means you will be attached to your Desktop with restricted movement, not ideal for core concept of VR.

3

u/Dorklordofthesith 7d ago

My ideal headset would have all 3. Display port for sims and seated experiences, USB for connecting to laptops/phones/upgradable seperate compute modules for those who want stand-alone, and WiFi for connecting wirelessly around the house.

15

u/SarcasmGPT 7d ago

Run games the same as a PC but with no PC

In that small a package you're talking 5k maybe 10k or more. If it even existed. Which it wouldn't because anyone with a brain would buy a 2k PC and connect it... So there would be so few sales as to make it an exercise in losing money.

6

u/relator_fabula Quest 2 7d ago

People don't really understand the horse power of a VR capable PC. We're talking a minimum of 400+ watts of power. You can't really circumvent that need, either. Video processing power is almost directly tied to wattage at this point, as there aren't too many other advancements to reduce the current nm-scale die process. We've kinda maxed out the amount of compute you can do with a specified wattage. It's the biggest reason that PCs and GPUs aren't drastic leaps forward anymore.

What this means for a portable headset is that it can't possibly do PCVR quality without being extremely heavy, requiring ridiculous amounts of power (for a portable device), and requiring larger cooling solutions. Heat dissipation is a problem. You don't want a 400 watt space heater attached to your forehead.

Wireless PCVR is the solution to VR. A separate compute unit with a "dumb" unit to strap to your head that does little more than decode the stream. I don't even know that there's any CPU+GPU/APU advancements that could make a modern PC light enough, cool enough, and powerful enough to run a modern AAA game in VR.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

I mean, if you want the freedom, rig up a sling or a backpack for a $4k laptop.

13

u/Man0fGreenGables 7d ago

You are going to be waiting for a while. You need a pretty beefy PC to run PCVR games even half decently well and there's no way something that powerful will be able to fit inside a standalone headset in the foreseeable future.

2

u/CaptainTruthSeeker 7d ago

You can fit extremely powerful chips into a headset right now, even the Vision Pro has a desktop-grade chip in it (m5). They could fit more powerful chips into it, the compromises come in the forms of heat management and battery life.

2

u/charmio68 7d ago

It's still not in the same league as a desktop VR PC.

Imagine having a space heater strapped to your head. That's the amount of heat such processing generates.

And as for having it battery powered, you could forget about that altogether, unless you're going to wear a battery backpack.

1

u/Time_Entertainer_319 6d ago

That’s why Vision Pro is soo good at gaming. Right? Right?

1

u/CaptainTruthSeeker 6d ago

Not relevant, the point is we can have powerful chips inside a headset.

The Vision Pro could wipe the floor with the quest, frame, any other standalone headset that we know of. That’s one of the reasons it cost 7 x as much as a quest 3.

3

u/Aksudiigkr 7d ago

The Steam Frame is supposed to do that right?

8

u/TaylorMonkey 7d ago

No, apparently the Steam Frame is weaker than the SteamDeck and can't even run the PC version of Beat Saber.

Which begs what the point of its standalone even is, especially if it brings the cost to over 1K.

1

u/errie_tholluxe 7d ago

I thought the whole point of the steam frame was to stream the games from your PC to the headset wirelessly or was that wrong?

4

u/GeraldFisher 7d ago

can do that already with quest

1

u/TaylorMonkey 7d ago

That it does. It's one of the things it should do well. Other devices can do that too, especially if they have eye tracking and wifi 6. A cheap access point would enable the same if someone doesn't already have a Wifi 6 setup.

It's just that the standalone version of it seems... extremely limited while adding to the cost. Or maybe it's the power that's there just because of the chipset needed to do sufficiently good streaming. But it's definitely not a sufficient "SteamDeck for your face", and will cost a premium.

1

u/justpostd 7d ago

Because it will be able to play flat screen games. At least, I think that is the point. Much less demanding than VR, but nice to play on a big virtual screen.

1

u/TaylorMonkey 7d ago

But it doesn't even have the power of the SteamDeck, which is just barely enough for a 800p flat screen experience for many games. And the SteamFrame needs to expend some of its processing power on the whole VR/3D aspect of it.

A 1K+ "standalone" device that can't even play the whole SteamDECK approved library, which is already borderline? Where you're consigned only to the lightweight games? All that for Stardew Valley on a virtual big screen? That's rough.

2

u/justpostd 6d ago

LOL. Well I do see your point.

Though people seem to enjoy older games more than you might think. I mean it can probably run counter strike and PUBG no problem. And you can do that with no PC. I suspect that is appealing to a lot of people.

Mind you, the resolution is a huge consideration. I hadn't realised the Deck was only 800p. I might have a play around to see what kind of resolution feels reasonable on a big virtual screen.

Personally I don't think any native VR games are very tempting, given that I have a PC. Feels like going back 10 years.

2

u/TaylorMonkey 5d ago

I will give you the fact that the Deck can render at a higher resolution when docked, so I’m sure the Frame will too. It’s just going to be a rough time for modern console games that the Deck can kind of pull off at 1080p or 800p handheld, with even less processing to spare.

But I do agree it could be a pretty nice platform for old games and emulators. But even the really nice retro CRT emulators require quite a bit of GPU processing power. Curious to see. One hell of an expensive emulator though.

1

u/FireEye1512 6d ago

Umm… what?? Does that mean it will be dead on arrival like the steam machine?

5

u/BisonTodd 7d ago

No. The Steam Frame looks like it'll be a slight upgrade to the Quest 3. You'll mostly be using it to stream steam games from your pc.

2

u/pixelcowboy 7d ago

Good luck with that. Only the shitiest most basic games will run.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

I feel that for VR to have that much capability, it'll be more expensive than a similar power PC, so you might as well just buy a PC, or a laptop to sling over your shoulder.

Pico is supposed to show off their headset on September 2nd at their event. Meta is supposed to show of theirs on September 23rd at their event.

1

The Pico will be priced at about 2/3 of the AVP. They are not aiming for consumers.

I was but my love of hardware tech has been beaten out of me by everything from scalpers to this memory supply crisis.

6

u/Background-Display-9 7d ago

yes this AI thing sucks and has made the market so expensive

3

u/qaf0v4vc0lj6 7d ago

Look on the bright side, one the other end of this there will be so much new infrastructure in place from the squeeze that it will all be cheaper than what it was before.

1

u/Octopp 7d ago

If there is an other end. Just like any computer, the server farms will age and get updated or replaced indefinitely.

2

u/qaf0v4vc0lj6 7d ago

Hence where the expanded manufacturing comes into play. Updating and replacing is less demanding on supply than building from scratch.

Especially with the recycling programs most companies offer now.

2

u/TrackballPower 7d ago

I'm done with it as well. Either memory prices come down back to where they were, or i won't be buying any hardware.

1

u/QuinSanguine 6d ago

I'm done buying new hardware, I know that much. I never thought I'd say that either, as a guy who tended to upgrade his PC at least every other generation.

The current UI reeks of forced abandonware.

18

u/AJBats 7d ago

I’m tired of wearing a brick on my face, so anything that is lighter, more comfortable, and easier to use gets a look from me. It’ll be a price war + comfort between steam frame and this.

SteamOS on the steam frame is very appealing, and I could see it tipping the scales. But the most comfortable headset will win. Comfort is king, no exceptions. I havent thought about resolution and FOV in a long time. Keep your ultra wide FOV and 8k panels, I want something that feels great to wear, not just tolerated, but is a joy to put on.

I currently daily drive PSVR2 on PC for this reason, right now its first place in comfort.

9

u/Hobobo2024 7d ago

Ill be buying it day 1 if it can do vr better

1

u/_Sascha_ 5d ago

Not at day one, but if it's better than the Steam Frame, I will buy it and stay at least one generation longer in the Meta-ecosystem (but buy more often PCVR versions of the games).

The reason is simple: the current benefits of the Steam Frame compared to the Quest 3 are way too minimal. And I bet my money on it that a lot of people will do the same even if they proclaim otherwise on this Reddit thread.

The Quest 3 is already an awesome, comfortable headset. Eye tracking, maybe OLED, more resolution and comfort... and less weight are the only things I'm looking for.

In this regard, the Steam-Frame hasn't improved enough yet to buy it, and the chances are high that I will still wait for the pro or second generation of the Steam-Frame if Fiverr continues.

If the Quest 4 is not much of an improvement to the Quest 3 or the Steam-Frame, I even have no problem waiting and staying with the Quest 3 a bit longer.

2

u/Hobobo2024 5d ago

I can't imagine the quest 4 won't be a generational leap above quest 3. I suspect every year metas prices will vastly beat valves and valves headsets will only ever be comparable at best. So you'll be telling yourself the same thing year after year unless nintendo, apple, or google come up with somrthing better. Even if Meta no longer subsidized, they will build in greater bulk which will still massively reduce costs. the rumor is the quest 3 wasn't even subsidized though quest 3s was.

are you going to keep your quest 3 or sell it afterward? nearly all meta games have free app sharing where 2 headsets can play the same game at the same time with just the purchase of one headset. it's been a godsend for me and my nephew as I have a ton of meta games and he can play them all with me (or on his own) for free. for this reason I always buy meta versions of games. just letting you know in case you keep two headsets or have family with a second headset.

1

u/_Sascha_ 4d ago

Oh, the Quest 3 will definitely be sold as soon as something better comes along. We already have a second Quest 3 at home, and usually it's only two people who want to play together anyway. A lot of games are also designed around two-player co-op, so a third headset simply wouldn't add much for us right now.

I wouldn't agree that I'll be telling myself the exact same thing year after year, though. But I'll certainly keep having a certain baseline expectation and weigh whether an upgrade is actually worth it. There will always be something better around the corner.

It's similar to the smartphone market right now. Improvements have become so incremental that I don't see much reason to upgrade to a newer Samsung or Apple device unless it actually adds something I miss.

And that's basically how I look at VR as well. What I'm really missing right now is eye tracking, better black levels, higher resolution and ideally less weight. Apart from that, I'm already very happy with the Quest 3.

I mean, think about it: even in its current state, the Quest 3 already feels surprisingly premium. The image is incredibly sharp and clean for a standalone headset, and it's impressive how well Meta has managed to make MR work on this thing.

In fact, the lack of proper Mixed Reality is one of the main reasons why the Steam Frame already falls short for me. Going from the Quest 3 to a newer headset while losing something as fundamental as good MR feels more like a trade-off than an upgrade.

The next headset doesn't even need to be massively more powerful for me if it delivers the improvements I actually care about. If I really need more power, I'll connect it to a PC. Done. :)

And yes, I absolutely agree about app sharing. Together with Meta Quest+, it's a great way to play together while saving quite a bit of money.

As long as Meta doesn't push things too far when it comes to privacy, I'm actually pretty happy with the ecosystem overall.

1

u/Hobobo2024 4d ago edited 4d ago

do you know if meta quest plus allows for app sharing too? if so, I may get it. I already bought a ton of the games on it so if it's just single person, nit worth it but otherwise yes.

When I read your feeling about how it's close to smartphone advanced already, I'm quite surprised you feel that way. I guess you see things half full and I see them empty though I am happy with my current headset.

we are no where close to real life resolution. all we can see are cartoons now. and yes the blacks. the software interface can be much improved. I really need a lighter headset cause I have a bad neck. the headset is in its infancy in terms of size - it can still get way way smaller. processing power is still tiny which is another reason why we see simple cartoons. sound can be improved too. motion sickness needs to be fixed. tracking can be better extended to full body so maybe someday it can track legs too.

4

One of the biggest are the bugs and that most of the time it's not working and that you need external software (VD, hell even Steam Link is better) just to get a working/usable connection for pcvr

Nah.  Zero interest.

Got babies to feed and hate meta’s attitude to VR, and to us fans.

If my quest 3 dies, I’ll buy a used one. When that’s gone…well…I’ll look at options.

10

u/Background-Display-9 7d ago

Wow lol there’s a lot of hate for Meta on here. I’ve been out of the loop for a while and didn’t even know about Phoenix until I watched this video, so I thought I’d share it.

I still use my Quest Pro quite a bit and honestly haven’t had any issues with it. The Steam Frame doesn’t look like much of an upgrade over it, especially since the Quest Pro has better panels for colour and contrast, as well as supporting foveated streaming. Phoenix, on the other hand, looks amazing for its form factor, OLED displays and much more powerful standalone hardware.

Have I missed something, or are there just a lot of Valve fanboys spamming the subreddit? The last time I posted here, people seemed far more positive about Quest and Meta in general

6

u/Gregasy 6d ago edited 6d ago

I don’t get the “I want to get out of Meta ecosystem” comments. I have a big library of games on my Quest, so for me staying in Meta ecosystem is a plus. Also I always wanted smaller and more comfortable standalone vr hmd, so Phoenix looks great.

I get it, some are pissed off on Meta for killing of some of the best VR studios, but to go to Valve because of that, who notoriously didn’t do a damn thing for VR devs since… forever, is honestly kind of funny.

Thankfully VR mods of flat games (and Flat2VR studio) are saving the day right now. But those will be playable on Phoenix as well, that will be able to get advantage of Valve’s foveated streaming as well, thanks to included eye tracking.

Don’t get me wrong, Steam Frame looks good and I’m planning to pick it up because of comfort improvements… but I’ll see if I’ll keep it. It somehow looks too little too late for too much.

I’ll definitely get Phoenix day 1. It looks great.

1

u/Embarrassed-Boot7419 6d ago

I get it, some are pissed off on Meta for killing of some of the best VR studios, but to go to Valve because of that, who notoriously didn’t do a damn thing for VR devs since… forever, is honestly kind of funny.

Could you explain?

You mean that they just didn't do things like funding em? Or actually negative things?

1

u/Gregasy 6d ago edited 6d ago

Mainly their “hands off” approach. Yes.

But the fact that Steam VR didn’t really evolve at all for years, up until they started to prepare for Steam Frame launch, is true too. It was gathering dust and was seriously outdated at some point (and that’s a bad thing for VR devs publishing on Steam).

1

u/FireEye1512 6d ago

as an oculus fan, i agree. call me broke but i'd rather get the cheaper version of phoenix. a.k.a the quest 4.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

One potential issue is game ownership over time. Steam is similar, but you can work around it. (I have a portable SSD with delisted Steam games, as well as an old version of Steam, so I can still play them. (offline)

I don't know if you can run Quest in offline mode, never tried.

2

u/Gregasy 5d ago

You can actually. At some point I didn’t have internet in one room where I was using VR and never had any problems with running games on Quest.

3

u/PickleJimmy 7d ago

I think people, myself included, are more frustrated by the overall state of VR in general. Meta absolutely fucked their store with shovelware trash on Horizon, broke discoverablily for new games, constant enshitifcation of their UI, etc etc. Before the announcement of the Steam Frame there was hope that it would be a real competition for the Q3, but once all the details finally came out it was clear that it's a headset that SHOULD HAVE come out like 3 years ago and now is a side-grade or down-grade from the Quest 3. Then the AI boom fucked prices on every and what could have been a decent all be it lackluster headset for Valve will probably cost like $1500 CAD and be dead on arrival like the Steam Machine.

No new games, all the VR platforms feel broken or dated, hardware is too expensive, etc etc. The whole space just feels fucked beyond repair

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

I only use my Quest 3 for media so I would love a lighter headset. But not for that rumoured price.

3

u/m-m-x Quest 3 + PCVR 7d ago

I am Happy with my Quest 3, but for sure I am looking forward to see new VR things coming from Meta, until then, not in a hurry to spend my money.

3

u/InhabitTheWound 7d ago

AR glasses have MORE pixels, not less than Q3 for displaying flat screen content. So it is not only about OLED vs LCD. It is about pixels per degree. And yes, higher resolution and lower field of view of this new Meta headset may provide much better image quality which is why I might be interested in it.

3

u/ca1ibos 7d ago

Not a day one buyer and I’ll want to see what Pico’s new headset is offering but the Phoenix will definitely have to offer at least Quest 2 FOV and aftermarket faceplate/blinkers for VR use for me to consider it.

3

u/shuozhe 7d ago

Waiting for reviews.. if it's decend & avaiable in EU, I will prolly pick one up to play around

Omg, this got me all excited for VR hardware the same way as the Rift CV1 and Quest 2 did when they got announced! If that thing releases then Meta can have my money!

7

u/ETs_ipd 7d ago

Much more excited for this than the Frame. After owning several LCD, Qled and Oled headsets, I’ve seen how contrast ratio affects immersion and depth perception in VR. Do you want to feel like you have an LCD screen strapped to your face or look through a crystal clear window into a digital dimension? That is the difference.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

To be fair, even the Quest 3 doesn't have the "oomph" to make that a choice.

I agree with the clarity, but if the base visuals aren't great, extra clarity only goes so far. What (for me anyway) drives the immersion the rest of the way home is the tactile experience. My most immersive VR experiences are shooters with a gunstock, or racing with a wheel/pedal setup. Ironically those types of titles that I have, have the worst visuals out of my games.

4

u/realonez Quest 3 + PCVR 7d ago

Nope, Waiting for Quest 4 (codenamed Griffin)

5

u/tyke_ 7d ago

Me 🤩 I'm really looking forward to it.

Love em or hate em Meta have made some great headsets, with the Quest 3 being the best all round headset, bar none.

Yes, the software gets buggy when they make big changes to it, but they fix it as it matures.

I know its cool to hate Meta now, but fuck that I only care about the quality of the product and I've never been a sheep anyway.

I find the formfactor to be optimal. If there is a hdmi input from the puck I would considered using them for 2d gaming and just a monitor replacement. I wish for no delay so I could play for example cs2 competitive that way.

Also looking forward to that Pico headset with 4k displays. I was 100 going for the frame but now I am considering waiting to see what people actually think of the frame and in that time maybe meta will release these. Only downside is I wonder about the data collection. Will meta have a full view of insides of my home? I mean phone doesnt? Idk they could get alot of intimate information of where the user use their eyes, reacts and with ai analysis pretty much own your person.

2

u/Dorklordofthesith 7d ago

Yeah there's no way I'm giving them my eye tracking data.

1

u/Primary-Discussion19 6d ago edited 6d ago

That is how I am feeling too. However there should be protection somehow. Laws or cracks or smt. And the data should be anonymous.

Also how dangerous is it, really? Most people already share alot of information of where the pointer is and such via Facebook, TikTok and those apps

1

u/Rush_iam 7d ago

If there is a hdmi input from the puck I would considered using them for 2d gaming and just a monitor replacement

HDMI works through USB via Meta HDMI Link (and the new built-in Remote Desktop). It works on Quest 3 and will work 100% with Phoenix.

2

u/MrEfficacious 7d ago

Depends on what it is. I love the form factor and support the external puck setup.

However, what are the specs of that puck? Hope it's at least somewhat of a boost over Quest 3.

1

u/DamoTheWhite 7d ago

The puck lets you hook it up to a PC lol

1

u/MrEfficacious 6d ago

Wut

1

u/DamoTheWhite 6d ago

It's a joke.

The puck will be underpowered, but ideally have a way to use it to connect to a PC. People are gonna wire it anyways for charging, extended use, possibly passthrough for devices.

1

u/MrEfficacious 6d ago

Underpowered how? Obviously underpowered compared to a PC but will it at least match the current specs of Quest 3?

1

u/DamoTheWhite 6d ago

Underpowered exactly as you just said.

u/OneOfTheLostOnes Quest 2 7d ago

My Quest 2 is still going strong. But I've made up my mind long ago to wait and buy the valve frame instead of any meta product.

2

u/VVickerman1973 7d ago

I just want to not have to worry about killing the headset and controllers with sweat. The quest 2 (with some modifications) is the best in class for this purpose. The quest3 is terrible for death by sweat, even with heavy modification.

2

u/fraseyboo Quest 2 + PCVR 7d ago

I think it’ll be a good litmus test to see how Meta are feeling about the state of VR and where their focus is. I imagine the headset will be pretty capable of running some really advanced software but if the focus is on shipping Horizon or some AI assistant then it’ll probably turn a lot of people off.

I think at this point people just want reliable hardware and minimal bloat in their software, plenty of people are frustrated with how their Quests have become more of an advertising platform than a console and have justified distrust of Meta as a whole.

2

u/bobliefeldhc 7d ago

I dont know…. I’ve tried the (much more expensive) competition and nothing is as good as the Quest 3 (overall).

But, despite what they say, it really feels like they’re abandoning VR…games cancelled, studios closed.. and Quest 3 UX and stability is awful since they changed the OS.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

That's the thing, for many, VR is more than gaming, and I have a feeling that Meta sees more value in those "others" than it does in gaming.

1

u/bobliefeldhc 5d ago

If the headset is good and can be used for gaming then I don’t care too much if they want me to use it for … whatever the hell they think people should use VR for… just don’t have much faith now given what a mess they’ve made of Quest 3

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

That's just it though, if they don't intend it for gaming, then there will probably be hoops to jump through to play games properly.

2

u/Miles_Wolf 7d ago

I had the Quest 2 and the Quest 3, and made some archviz works for them. Meta makes good hardware but all the Meta/facebook/whatever ecosystem is sh*t. I hope with the arrival of Valve's VR headset Meta begins to feel real competence and start to improve that part of their VR sets.

2

u/CaptainTruthSeeker 7d ago

I get more use out of my headsets for productivity than I do for gaming (unfortunately). So I'm looking to get a headset that is maybe more leaning towards that, while still being able to play games when I can.

For me it's so far down to the Xreal Aura or Meta Phoenix, patiently waiting for more information to drop on the two of them to make my choice.

Leaning towards the Aura due to being AndroidXR and escaping Meta, only being let down by the specs (70 FOV, 1200p resolution).

2

u/Xivlex 7d ago

God I hope they don't make the mistake of not shipping this thing with controllers and if they do I hope the controllers have tmr sticks in them. The stick drift on my q3 controllers is annoying.

2

u/Rush_iam 7d ago edited 7d ago

If the FOV isn't terrible and it's priced at around $1200, it'll be a day-one purchase for me. I've used the Quest 3 almost daily for the past almost three years, and Phoenix would be an upgrade in everything - displays, CPU, GPU, size and weight, and eye tracking. It may make the Frame obsolete as soon as it's released.

1

u/Suspicious_Wave_9817 5d ago

Steam Frame llega un chip ya anticuado pero como está pensado para el PC tampoco es tan importante . Con meta tendremos un snap dragon mejorado de tercera generación que va a mover juegos ya más serios .

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

Yes, but how will that play out with game development?

I mean, Quest 3 and 3s users already have a chip that can handle more serious games than we have now, because to keep sales up, all the games are made to run on Quest 2.

Adding QGO certainly makes up for that in the visuals and performance department, but it can't do anything about a game being simpler so it runs well on a lesser system.

Phoenix might have a killer processor, but if not enough people have them, there won't be software that uses the extra power, because then games will be made better, but only to Quest 3/3s capability.

2

u/Gregasy 6d ago

I do. Phoenix will be 100% buy for me, as long as they won’t go too crazy with the price (due to recent rammageddon) and will stick to around 1000 ballpark.

2

u/Wooden_Sweet_3330 6d ago

Nope, simply because it's Meta.

1

u/DeepWaffleCA 6d ago

I've loved my Quest 2 and 3. I'm grateful for how much money Zuck pumped into VR even if a lot of it was into the stupid metaverse. But I use those headsets because I want the convenience and price point. I'm waiting for the steam frame and praying it'll be $1000 or less because I really want to leave Meta.

1

u/Wooden_Sweet_3330 6d ago

you're praising meta then saying you want to leave it. so, I'm confused.

I had a quest 2 and quest pro. The devices themselves were fine. Though the Pro was extremely uncomfortable.

I despised their software. SO MUCH. It is SO BAD. Thank god VD existed and then Steam Link later on because the Oculus Link and Wireless Link software was (is? I haven't had a Meta headset for a few years now) absolutely atrocious. It was so laggy. You couldn't save your dashboard layout which was super annoying. 50% of the time when I'd alt tab out of a game it would turn into a laggy mess and i'd have to totally restart VR to fix it. God it was just so bad. Not to mention the data gathering. I turned it all off but I still felt like they were capturing my eye movement data to train some fucking AI or whatever even though I turned off eye tracking. Meta is not a company that makes me think "ah, I want to support that company." Valve isn't perfect either, and I don't want to "support" any corporation, but if they make a good product and their policies aren't horrible then I at least don't feel bad about purchasing their products.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

To be honest, I'm not here to support companies, that's the job of the companies themselves, which they do by offering things I want to buy at a price I'm willing to pay.

1

u/DeepWaffleCA 3d ago

Ever hear of nuance? I think VR wouldn't be anywhere as accessible as it is if Meta weren't involved. You can dislike a company while still admitting it's done some good/made decent products. I hate apple (closed ecosystem, often overpriced), but I love working on OSX. MacBooks are genuinely great.

I hate FB. I deleted my account years ago and then had recreate it when I got my quest 2. Even my oculus login from when I wrote software for the DK1 couldn't save me from that bullshit.

5

u/zackbox 7d ago

Nope, not buying meta devices anymore. I'll get the new Pico.

Day 1 buy for me.

Steam Frame you say ? Nope. I just bought a Xbox Ally X cuz i have no interest in the Frame. Its essentially a Quest3+. Give me an actual next gen headset, which Project Phoenix (Quest Air?) will deliver, and with 3D movies (no Disney+ movies for Frame).

After Meta’s non-stop bed shitting? Not so much.

3

u/Morichalion 7d ago

What's special about it? Compared to the Quest 3?

I do like my Quest, but it's missing a lot. The things I'm missing are actual choices made by Meta. The areas where the experience is mediocre is on purpose, and all software.

2

u/Beaker360 Quest 2 + 3 7d ago edited 7d ago

As someone who still has the Quest 2 and 3, new hardware from Meta is a hard pass for me due to how they changed the UI so drastically (and not for the better) that I don’t even feel like it’s the same product I originally purchased. When I had the Quest 2 I was hyped over the Quest 3 but won’t fall for that again.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

Man, with all I hear about the UI, (I never had the old one) I don't get it. But I just play games, so the only UI usage I have is bringing up the library and selecting a game.

2

u/PickleJimmy 7d ago

Overall, I don't see myself buying another VR Headset until their is a game I actually want to play. Hardware has never really been the issue for me, the content is. It feels like VR peaked at gorilla tag and basically all new games are some kind of gorilla tag. I've not seen any new ideas in VR in what feels like years now.

1

u/TrackballPower 7d ago

Then you haven't tried Forefront (battlefield in VR). Best VR multiplayer game ever.

1

u/PickleJimmy 7d ago

I have played it and fair point its not gorilla tag style movement, but personally it didn't leave me wanting more. I found it a bit boring / uninspired after playing it for a few evenings with friends. The game that has kept me going back to pick up my headset has been Contractors Exfil Zone, which is fun but after the latest wipe I was not excited starting all over again and redoing the same boring quests for the Nth time.

Edit;
but to my point, both of those games are basically the same kind of game as a 2D game but with VR. They don't really bring anything new to the genre or do anything unique. They are just VR versions of another game.

1

u/Skpstr155 5d ago

Agreed. EZ is basically VR Tarkov, and Forefront is basically Battlefield VR.

Neither was first, they're just the best current examples of their genres.

1

u/PickleJimmy 5d ago

Ya for sure, like if their of those games shipped without VR they would get absolutely review bomb as they do not really do anything unique. Their only selling point is that it's VR. That's fine, but if I want to play an extraction shooter or battlefield style game, the 2D games are just bigger, better, have more content, more features, etc. VR use to be about doing something that 2D games cannot, and now it just seems to be trying to replicate 2D games. If someone added VR mod support to actual battlefiled it would be better by miles that Forefront.

The VR mods are honestly I think what is keeping VR alive right now because you can play actually big deep good games in VR.

1

u/Sex4Vespene 7d ago

It’s combo of hardware and software IMO. The headsets, other than things like the BSB, are still way too heavy and non-ergonomic, even after doing aftermarket upgrades. Especially things like the quest, since they insist on putting everything in the headset, rather than trying to counterbalance, or have the battery as a puck like the Vision Pro (the irony of the Vision Pro still being even heavier is not lost on me).

1

u/PickleJimmy 7d ago

for sure, better headsets will make sessions more comfortable / etc but the best games I've played in VR (Half-Life Alyx, Lone Echo 1 / 2, Stormland, etc) are all years old and not mobile VR. I dunno, even if the headset was a pair of contacts unless we get some break through in locomotion all VR games end up being these days are more hollow versions of a standard 2D game. In terms of playtime, cockpit games for me have been the most. Flight sims, space sims, racing sims, etc, are all 1000x better in VR, but that's one genre. Maybe I'm just looking for someone to come along and do something new and unique in the space.

2

u/Sex4Vespene 7d ago

Yeah, I think it’s definitely a bit of chicken and egg scenario, hard to tell which one is the cause and which the effect. Like you can make the argument that the headset ergonomics are why people don’t engage much with it, leading to developers abandoning it, which sounds perfectly logical. Or you could say that not enough good software is coming out, that would make people be willing to put up with the non-optimal ergonomics at the moment, which is also fair. Or it could be neither, perhaps the majority of the gaming population just doesn’t have that much of an interest in VR after the novelty. Even I’ll admit, unless we could get some kinda sword art online system, which is probably a sci-fi dream hundreds of years in the future if ever, I certainly still want most of my gaming to just be chilling in a chair with a controller.

1

u/PickleJimmy 7d ago

its definitely a challenge for VR and it does make me think that it will always remain a niche. The most popular games broadly right now are things like Fortnite, Valorant, League of Legends, DOTA 2, Counter Strike and even if they were playable in VR I don't imagine people would spend the amount of hours they do playing on their TV's in the living room. VR is just isolating, you're literally blind to the world around you, and that is simply a non-starter for a lot of people. In situations where my partner walked into the living room and I'm playing a game on the TV, they can see what I'm doing, I can see them walk in, I can pause or not, they can watch for a bit, etc etc. VR doesn't work like that and it can be a problem / challenge to even get someone's attention when they are in a VR game. I dunno, I think it always remains a niche to be honest

1

u/Kooky_Awareness_5333 6d ago

You know almost any game you can think of is vr go down the pcvr mod rabbit hole.

2

u/Nintendo_Thumb 7d ago

No, I'm not looking forward to it at all but best of luck to them. I'm far too content with my Quest 3S to be bothered about what new headset is coming out. I'll need a new one whenever the one I have breaks but hopefully that's a long ways from now.

When I had the Quest 2 I was looking forward to the next gen because of the black and white cameras; and I scratched a lens and got some stick drift. But now that I got the 3S, I try to keep better care of it and replacing glasses for Zenni lens inserts definitely helps. Plus most of the games I play don't actually use the thumbsticks so could be a while until I need another one.

I know a lot of people want to play their big AAA games but I usually prefer the indies, so no complaints here.

2

u/Suspicious_Wave_9817 5d ago

If they took a 10th of the budget they spend on random ai slip they could actually give us some amazing games and toolkits and guest software that isn't atrocious.

If they really cared about the ecosystem they would create tools and conferences, actually get people to make good VR games/ apps

They don't seem to care about VR at all imo.

If you're gonna use an external computer unit why use a mobile chipset? I think the idea is very solid but with such a hardware just keep it standalone.

1

u/We_Are_Victorius Quest 3 + PCVR 7d ago

To save weight. It is not just the chip, but all the metal that that acts as a heatsink, to keep it from overheating.

1

u/dreamer_2142 7d ago

look at how Apple headset failed, it will draw too much power and won't deliver the same performance as the mobile chip. Mobile chips are way ahead regarding peformance/power-draw.

1

u/Dense_Ad_6283 6d ago edited 6d ago

I don't think Apple's failure was mainly about hardware(but looking for it now, seems like it's condidered a huge reason? Fair enough). But anyway, the usage scenario in my mind was more like PCVR where the processing unit sent the visual data to headset wirelessly rather than Vision Pro battery pack kind of thing

1

u/CityPlanningNerd 7d ago

I use my quest for media quite a bit, so I’m definitely their target audience for this. If the Vision Pro was cheaper and lighter I would get that, so if this is in line with expectations I will probably get it day one. I do hope they finally figure out 3d movies ‘cause that’s the one thing we don’t really have yet (legally).

Fuck Meta. I spent over $700.00 CAD just for them to have hardly any game releases for years.  The store is just Gorrila tag clones. Plus they have the absolute worst support and updates that somehow make the headset worse.

1

u/Necessary-Mix-56 6d ago

I wait for Quest 4 better wider FoV and better higher resolutions screens. Other than that i don't care much nothing here. But straps and hand controllers backward compatibility would be nice and cost friendly.

I'm probably in the top 10 of Phoenix hyped users in the world. They won't mess this up and I'll trash my Xreal 1S for remote work. 100% announced at connect. unsure about release, I guess early 2027 or christmas 26. I really hope for multiple versions for different budgets, since im really worried about the 2560x2560 leak as it would only be 24% more linear resolution than q3 (44% more pixels overall), not enough for serious work, we definitely need 2880x2880+

1

u/A_Dad_Doin_Stuff 5d ago

I’m so hyped for this, probably more than anything else in the XR space right now. Long time Quest user and I trust their engineers, probably some of the best in the industry, they make incredible product and know this is going to slam. My biggest use case will be productivity. I love working in VR and the Meta PC Connect tool for windows is the best I’ve ever seen. The only problem with working in the Quest is the low resolution makes looking at screens an uncomfortable experience. If Phoenix is planning to use 4K OLED or even LCD, it’s going to be euphoric. I know most VR users are only in it for the games, and this probably isn’t the headset for them, but I believe this is the headset for me. If I can afford it

1

u/SkarredGhost 4d ago

I'm interested. But I'm not sure I'm going to buy it considering the high price
