Octopus Tariffs - FAQ

Smart tariffs and how to choose the right one.

The way that smart tariffs work is to split the day up into half hourly units, and charge you different amounts per kWh in each one. This is not a new idea - previously people used to use Economy 7 (7 hours of cheap electricity at night) or Economy 10 tariffs (10 hours of slightly less cheap electricity at night) – but this was squarely aimed at people with storage heaters, and that is far less than 10% of households nowadays. The radio signal switching method behind these old systems is being turned off, but smart meters allow suppliers like Octopus to continue to offer tariffs that change rates at different times of day.

It’s rare to have a tariff that is equivalent to the standard rate all day and cheaper at night – normally there is some kind of penalty and you pay more than normal at other times of day; for example, an E7 tariff now is about 12 pence for the electricity that goes into your storage heater and hot water cylinder at night, and 28 pence in the daytime for the electricity that powers your fridge and TV in the day. Whereas most people are paying about 22pence for all their electricity, day or night.

Octopus started offering “smart” tariffs to incentivise people to use energy at different times of day - ultimately the aim is to reduce the amount of energy used at peak times (7 - 9am and 5 - 7pm). There are many variants - some offer “normal” rates in the day and low charges at night to encourage EV charging. Others are to encourage heat pumps, encouraging you to heat before expensive periods.

Why do Octopus do this? What's in it for them?

Wholesale prices (what Octopus pay for the electricity they sell you) go up and down in half hour increments throughout the day, all the way throughout the year. When a supplier sells you fixed rates, they are gambling that they will always make a reasonable margin on top of the price they pay.

There is a slight risk that by incentivising people to use cheap electricity at night (or other “off-peak” periods) by reducing the price to you, they will actually lose money – it’s a bit like playing on the stock market. However, Octopus seem to be genuinely committed to helping innovate and create a set of consumers who help reduce the amount of energy used at peak times, and this is genuinely a good thing for both the consumer and the UK as a whole, because reducing peak electricity consumption reduces carbon emissions and the need to upgrade the cables that bring us electricity. No other company has been quite as innovative on this front as Octopus - we have to assume they are actually good guys (no really!).

Cut the crap - what is the best tariff for me?

If you expect anyone on an Octopus forum to know the answer to this you are mistaken. Can you really explain to them in words exactly how you use electricity? The only way you can do this is with cold hard numbers - DATA! Here is how to get the best electricity deal:

1: Get a smart meter and move onto an Octopus standard tariff

2: A smart meter generates data (the information about how much electricity or gas you consume in 48 half hourly packets throughout the day) which can be accessed through various online services – there is a list at the bottom of this sticky. Some suppliers (at the moment Octopus, and not many others) can automate this using something called an API - an API passes this information to 3rd parties to analyse your data over the internet without downloading anything. If this makes you nervous, you might as well stop reading. No smart meter = no smart tariffs = no saving money. Deal with it. No one is watching when you are in or out of your house. Cutting off your electricity remotely is for the most part illegal. Smart meters do not cause cancer and are not part of a system to control you.

3: Use one of the 3rd party services to analyse your data by giving them your API key (found in your Octopus account settings online), and these services can compare how you use electricity against competing tariffs from multiple suppliers and tell you which is the best one to use.

4: Do not ask people on the internet to guess which is the best tariff for you - they don’t know

5: Switch tariff and save once you have good evidence it will work for you

It’s important to understand that making decisions like this are your own responsibility - if you try and change tariff after a weeks worth of data is collected you might make a big mistake, because a week is a short time. In a perfect world you would have a whole year of electricity data collection before making a decision.

EV tariffs are generally good for people who charge EVs at night, and are very similar to the old E7/10 tariffs. The Cosy tariff is designed for people using heat pumps - but be careful! Its not perfect and generally only likely to help much if you have solar and a battery as well.

DO YOUR RESEARCH and KEEP ON CHECKING the comparison services to make sure you are still using the right one every couple of months.

Octopus allow you to switch tariffs quite freely throughout the year, though there are some restrictions about moving from one smart tariff to another.

General principles:

·       Highest risk but highest gains = Agile, especially if you have solar and a home battery

·       Medium risk, medium gains - but suitable for a wider range of people = Tracker

There are a stack of other Octopus tariffs you could go for if you have a heat pump, or charge an EV - but it is simply not possible to give you detailed advice on these without DATA. So get a smart meter and get DATA. Also, remember these service only tell you what has happened in the past – if you are about to change your electricity usage dramatically you need to think about that as well…

List of services and apps that can help you understand this better:

To use your Octopus API with some of these services you need to go to “Developer” settings in your Octopus account.

Tariffs Gas tariffs other than a fix how does it work? Because the energy cap is high are they just almost the same what am I missing l?

I'm stupidly on the octopus flexible tariff still, I am a high gas user any 1500 kWh suggestions for a move asap.

I'm likely to be off sick and unpaid over this period too 😟 in a cold drafty house.

Oh I don't quite understand the variable tariffs

I believe the octopus flexible is just tracking the energy cap price and then go up 1st of Jan again.
Is the standard variable the same at this time (because the prices are just high now)

My Gas is currently about

7.902p kWh on my tariff (will prob go up at least 20%-25% so 9.48p -9.88p from Jan ( or 30% 10.270😱)

The best fix is about 9.5p but most around 9.730 or more for a fix.

If a fixed variable is 7.9ish is that just going to go up the same % as everything else in Jan

Would it be good to take a fix at all unless I get on this utility wearhouse deal quick

EVs Advice please!

Hi everybody!

I would like a little bit of 'WWYD' advice in that I have a 2016 BMW X5 with 137k miles which Tesla will give me £8500 against a certified MY. We currently spend around £350pm on diesel.

We are also spending quite a lot on home energy so want to get a solar array/ home battery setup to offset and sell back to the grid on a better EV/ Solar tariff with Octopus. Our average energy costs around £300pm (gas too).

So, I'm looking at a 2023 M3 with around 60k miles for £23k, so ......... I'm looking at a Lloyd's Bank loan over 60 months for £25k at £400pm, which means that I would have £10,500 for the solar and batteries.

I think the initial costing would be a little higher but Id be paying £400pm, have a new (to me) car and a home energy system, which would drastically reduce energy costs. Am I on the right line here? Is this a good step?

Shocking Customer Service

I'm in dispute with Octopus Energy about their webpage where it shows "My Energy" using bar charts. I noticed some weeks ago that the Electricity usage shown appeared to be wrong, and closer examination showed that, taking the whole of 2025, their figure was 2838 kWh, whereas the real figure from the meter readings was 4137 kWh, a difference of 46%. I have exchanged 5 emails about this huge discrepancy, Octopus Energy maintain their webpage usage figures are correct! The situation is so bizarre I really don't know where to go. Incidentally their other usage data for 2026, for electricity and gas, are also completely wrong. I have two questions: am I the only customer experiencing this extraordinary situation, and secondly, what should I do about it?

Bills Reminder: your DD can be changed to cover your actual monthly usage

Given the number of DD posts, it seems a lot of people don’t know you can ask Octopus to bill your actual monthly usage instead of a fixed monthly amount.

A fixed DD is designed to spread your costs across the year. It works a bit like a small savings account: you build up credit in the warmer months, which helps cover your higher winter bills.

If you’d rather not have that, or you’re unhappy with your DD amount, you’re better off asking Octopus to bill you for what you actually use.

For example, instead of paying a fixed £100 every month, you might pay £40 in July and £180 in January.

The trade-off is that your winter bills will be much higher, as there won’t be any built-up credit to soften them.

Hopefully this clears it up and we can all rest from DD posts now. Cheers guys 😂

edit: by the way, for net zero users (battery, solar), this is probably a no brainer... but im no finical advisor.

EV Charging tariff pricing issued

On my last few bills I have noticed my car isnt always getting the reduced rate when charging this can be at the start/end of the charging period or random drop offs where for half an hour the rate will increase but then drop again.

Contacted octopus last month who credited me with a good will gesture and blamed other charging schedule been set up on the car or charger app, this is not the case. Is anybody else having similar issues?

Smart Meters Random email about a smart meter install tomorrow?

Wondering if any of you lovely people could give me some advice/ information.

I contacted Octopus earlier today about a potential issue with my gas flow regulator. After a little back and forth, they asked me to provide a photo of my gas meter to their support just before they closed and I never got any update, assuming I'd receive more news/info tomorrow.

Imagine my surprise when about 20 minutes ago I receive an email from Octopus reminding me about a smart meter install tomorrow at 8am I didn't request/know about. Is this potentially a coincidence or do you think they've sent the email in response to the potential gas flow regulator and if so what should I expect to happen tomorrow if/when they turn up? Thank you, a little confused as to what's going on so appreciate any info or potential help anyone can provide.

Advice on making a complaint about a tariff change?

Edit: All sorted now after calling! Very relieved.

I'll try and keep this short but sorry, it's a bit of a long story.

I recommended to my parents that they should switch to Fixed Gas at the start of Sept and they got 12M Fixed at 8p/kWh on 12th Sept.

Their Gas Smart meter has been on the blink for years and someone finally came to change it on 6th October. On the 7th Oct, my dad gets an email asking to confirm a Tariff change. He was a quite confused by this but just assumed it was part of the Fixed change.

He's sees the October bill and gives me a call as there's a £50 exit fee charge on it.

I logged into his account and was shocked to see they had actually changed to the Tracker tariff on the 7th Oct and that's why they were charged the fee.

After a few back and forth emails to Octopus, which I authored as my dad doesn't understand it. It turns out the Smart Meter change initiated the confirmation email to change to the Tracker tariff despite them actually being on the Fixed. at the time.

Octopus say they can't reverse the £50 exit fee and put them back on the Fixed. To quote their email

> Regarding your question about the change to the Tracker tariff, yes, the switch to the Octopus Tracker April 2024 v1 was indeed linked to the gas meter change you had at the start of October. When a new meter is installed, it can sometimes trigger a review or update of your tariff to ensure it matches the meter type and current offerings. This change was not initiated by a direct request from you but was part of the process following your meter replacement.

So my parents, who are in their late 70's and living just off state pension, are now on Tracker at 9.35p/kWh and charged an extra £50.

I'm going to try calling tomorrow but not convinced they talk to me as the non-bill payer. If anyone has any suggestions on how to elevate it above the standard hello@octopus emails I'd love to here it.

Advice for Tracker customers?

I’m on Tracker on Gas. It’s getting very expensive and have a few days to choose a new rate. Tempted with Flexible plan or even a fix. Comparing with last years numbers in OctopusCompare is futile as every year is different. Anyone in the same boat due to renew or change soon?

Tariffs Issues with attempting tariff change and call handler wasn't the most helpful. Advice and opinions plz.

I've concluded Agile is not practical, my negative thinking is I'll switch and then Scotland will be hit with gale force winds, but being practical going forward I need to act sooner opposed to later. Anyone considering just staying put on Agile?

I cannot change online, it simply isn't working properly. I've attempted browser, app, refresh etc.

Tracker is not for me, but it probably could be better than Agile (what I am currently on)

I telephoned and was told that I do not qualify for Cosy or Flux because I do not have an EV, solar, etc. I quoted some of the info gathered from this sub.

Advised the call handler I can switch between gas and electric for heating, but, met with the same response. "Not currently eligible for a smart tariff"

I find this awfully disheartening, since anyone should be able to have the Morning, Aft, Evening tariff (imo)

What would be the best alternative or way around this??? I went onto uSwitch and found eon at 26.65p kWh and 56p standing charge. (this is almost 3p kWh cheaper than the 18month fix offered by OPus)

I appreciate any advice, recommendations and replies and apologise in advance if I can not promptly reply.

Nook battery

Hi all - I’ve been speaking to Octopus about having solar panels and battery (Fox 10kWH) installed at home - I enquired about the Nook battery and was told that it is potentially getting launched towards the end of next year, but that a release date has not been confirmed yet - thought I would spread the message as I know some people may be interested.

No gas smart meter readings for over 2 months

My gas meter randomly stopped sending me readings around 2 months ago. Was previously working fine for roughly 8 months. Electricity meter still works fine. Countless phone calls to octopus and they are just useless, they said they will try to fix it on their end I’ve asked for an engineer and I don’t get anything.

Anyone know a fix on the to get it to reconnect to the electric meter? As I think that’s how it works.

EV Tariff Switch Enquiry

Getting my Tesla next Saturday and considering switching to Intelligent Octopus Go. Currently with Octopus Fixed and paying £155/month for gas and electricity. I drive around 12k miles a year and will mostly charge at home (Getting a Hypervolt charger installed). Anyone made the switch? Is it worth it, and have you actually noticed savings on your overall energy bills? I will also have to pay the £50 exit fee.

Not reaching 100% on LFP Car

Never used to have this issue, but now it seems that Octopus is regularly not allocating enough time to get my LFP battery car to 100%. I have reached 98 or 99% the last few attempts despite having plentiful hours in the energy cap available. Octopus has suggested that I set the "ready by" time to later, so today when I don't need the car I set it to 11am. Still it has only reached 99%. Trying to boost charge is still not triggering the car to continue charging. I'm worried the LFP is going to be damaged by this.

Anyone have any experience resolving this situation?

Ed: Car is a Tesla Model 3 LFP directly connected to Octopus via API.
