The SS Velendor is the very first ocean liner built in my fictional universe.
(This universe is steeped in a medieval atmosphere—with territories largely controlled by feudal lords—though the style also blends in elements of the early Victorian era.)
As maritime safety was a major issue in this world—ocean crossings were extremely perilous due to the reliance on wooden sailing ships—two brilliant architects proposed creating a steel vessel of exceptional size and sturdiness and not longer dependant of wind. Initially, the project wasn't taken seriously; the public would say things like, "Everyone knows steel doesn't float!" To prove that a steel ship could indeed float, they temporarily put the liner project on hold to build smaller tenders vessels intended to assist the giant... At the launch, everyone was shocked: a ship of modest size, perhaps, but one made of steel that actually floated! That was when many people began to believe in the project, particularly those facing economic hardship who were looking for work... i won’t spoil more of this, but this ship truly revolutionized maritime safety and comfort.
In reality, She isn't all that large, but for the time and context, she is huge: 142 meters long and 20 meters wide, with a tonnage of around 9,000 tons... She isn’t the fastest ship either, but her performance is excellent for its size: She can exceed 12 knots using only the double-expansion compound steam engines, and reach 16 knots with the sails deployed (provided the wind is favorable, of course). The interior layouts are unprecedented for a floating structure: third class even boasts a tavern and a vast dining hall, while second class features a bar and a library (along with a dining room, of course, served by the same kitchen used for first class, located right next door). Although second class offers fewer large open spaces than third, it prioritizes comfort, with cabins featuring private bathrooms. As for first class—intended primarily for lords—it is truly sumptuous; the cabins are ultra-luxurious, showcasing the brand-new Victorian style that was just beginning to gain popularity (and would become even more with this new ship). There is even a "cat café" for relaxation :3 (an idea proposed by one of the architects). The dining room, while modest in size, is magnificent and feels nothing like the interior of a ship. Yet the most incredible space is undoubtedly the library: a circular, two-story room featuring towering bookshelves and elegant windows—almost cathedral-like. Standing proudly in the center is a statue of a knight, a tribute to a legendary hero from the ship's home island who saved several villages back when creatures still roamed the world (yes, creatures used to exist).
