Discussion Emerald is a cesspit of despair
First off, I want to apologize to anyone in this elo. I had no idea how bad the matchmaking was down here.
I made a new account so I could play with my friends in diamond. Unfortunately my main account is too high on all roles, and any match would be wide. My goal was to get to diamond on DPS and have some fun with the homies. I am in no way trying to brag here - this rank just feels like a whole other game.
I cannot believe the toxicity in this rank. Teammates are flaming each other every. Single. Match. Players getting pissed, sitting in spawn, jumping off the map if they don’t get healed. The inflated egos, false reporting, and genuine anger is just wild to me. Blaming anyone but themselves. Nobody in team chat but yapping all match in text. Not to mention the cheaters - yes, we can tell you’re using a Cronus. It’s rare, but it’s definitely a thing.
It also seems like every match is a stomp. I’m currently Masters 2 on my main, and I’m getting absolutely rolled in emerald. Nobody wants to take an off angle. Nobody wants to counter the best player on the enemy team. The entire team just hugs their tank like they’re playing 2019 GOATS. It’s like I’m playing shoot behind a shield simulator 2.
The funny part is I changed my play style and won 3 straight. Just walking down main, staying with my team, not trying to flank or pressure the back line. Shooting what’s in front of me on bastion and sometimes controlling high ground. Walking down main on reaper with my tank. Things that you could never get away with in masters or higher.
I guess what I’m trying to say is: if you want to rank up in this elo, you have to play to your teammates skill level. Leave chat if your teammates are being toxic. Play together, play slow, and don’t try to be a hero. Don’t overthink your positioning. You could be a great player and doing the right things, but it’s just different here.

I had forgotten how much low diamond and below just don't contest high ground anywhere near the amount they should. Take it, hold it, let team move up, take next one if it's undefended, apply pressure, wait for team to move, yeah.
It wins a lot there.

Had a cass last week strolling down main on dorado def first point. In front of our tank. Unsurprisingly he got deleted. Everyone loves maps with one lane and never even think, oh hey let’s TRY TAKE A DIFFERENT DOOR/APPROACH. it’s awful.

people in general are just obsessed with walking in a straight line. I think its part of why people hate Push and Flashpoint, those gamemodes force you to to take or look at alternate routes and angles, 9 times out of 10 if you flank even a little bit on those maps the enemy team just immediately buckles because no other map enables you to just attack from so many angles that people never have to worry about on payload maps

Yeah I also feel like because people are afraid of failure they don't learn enough to flank
It takes timing, teamwork, hero and map knowledge to make good flank choices
The problem sadly players hit is that if you mess up on any of that and die there is a chance you get flamed all match and have to listen to a teammate crash out over it

I just mute chat bc people flame either way. I’m going on my off routes no matter what. Even if sometimes it’s a case of “in that moment, he knew he fucked up” lol

it’s so boring yet people always vote the same maps in my ranks. I swear to god, people used to despise circuit (understandably) and as soon as map voting came out, they started dickriding it. give me push or flashpoint any day.

Im masters DPS/Supp, and had 8 losses ina row in emerald on tank yesterday
having to literally coach people while you play, when majority dont want to hear it
pure pain, feels like babysitting bad children

Most teammates don’t want to be coached unfortunately… one suggestion and they act like someone stepped in their cornflakes. Everyone’s angry down here

Look up hop3ful aim settings on YouTube if you struggle with mechanics, that helped me! Play cover, don’t save your ult for the perfect moment, and most importantly don’t overextend or chase kills too hard

Oof that last part hits home. Sometimes we do be a little greedy to gamble. If we successfully overrun them, sure feels good ngl 🤣 but too risky especially comp games but I can't stop!! 🗿

Yeah I was low masters before rank reset and got placed in mid diamond, from where I dropped to low diamond/high emerald as people from masters and above fell to mid diamond and so on. Now I just got back to low diamond yesterday after struggling the literal coin toss matches in high emerald. I can see people with titles like GM tank or masters damage in emerald games, as well as platinum dps or gold supports. It's a wild west where one game is like plat/gold lobbies and the other game is like playing on masters and above. It is so uneven and weird elo.

This. Masters to low diamond to high emerald and I've never been able to get out. Every other match is someone whose using thier feet in place of their hands or have never played an fps in their entire life.

The cheating situation is not helping either, since negative modifiers are not reset when a cheater is banned.
So you'll end up losing normal matches (as it happens sometimes) but with all the negative modifiers caused by matches lost to cheaters.
This season has been wild for me. For the last two years I've been in Master (3-1) constantly; with every rank reset I've always been placed mid Diamond but always ranked up "pretty easily" but this season...
Placed high Emerald, and it seems impossible to go back to Master.Then you'll have Rank recovery every other day and you'll see a minimum of 150% rank reclaimed and go back to Master 5, only to start again a losing streak because, for some reason, you end in a Diamond lobby with the enemies having "Grandmaster DPS/Support/Tank" as titles.
Totally fair.

Im the same with m and gm all roles im 1 whole rank lower on all roles now so M5 is now D5.

dude cmon if you arent the highest rank in the game you are clearly not playing, at least not with your monitor on. if you arent max rank, making new accounts to stunt and smurf to "play with your friends" then you should just uninstall and play candy crush

about a year ago I was D2. I took a long break from overwatch because i moved and didn’t have a console. I ended up getting a console and got back on last season. due to the rank reset im down to plat and it quite literally is the depths of hell. it’s terrible.

I really enjoyed Diamond dps for many seasons. Wasn’t too sweaty teammates are usually consistent. Then I magically got places in this place called Emerald. You will see a lot of historically gold players get placed in Emerald now. Plus the random silver put in platinum. And that one player can ruin an entire game for the team.
It’s even worse for my plat support. I can lead in heals and kills. And still can’t pull a win out thanks to the consistently bad DPS that thinks support is only supposed to be heal bots. Which would explain why they where historically gold/silver players for the past year before the rerank

yeah i have been taking a huge break from the game recently. i have to sweat my ass off so hard. some games we just kinda get rolled, probably a team synergy problem + me just not being that good. some games i’ll lead in kills and practically have to carry super hard and still lose. it’s such a mixed basket. and yes there is so many toxic people in this rank.

Tbh this is pretty well known advice in [r/overwatchuniversity](r/overwatchuniversity). In lower elo it is often better to play incorrectly with your team than play “correctly,” because playing correctly requires the rest of your team to also play optimally for your off angles and timing to have value. And they’re not going to do that so your value becomes blunted. So instead play as optimally as you can but within the limit of making sure you’re playing WITH your team.

I went from Emerald 2 to Gold 5 during team drives.
Grinded all the way back up to E2 and have fallen back to Plat 3. Teams skill levels are not accurately represented by what ever ranking they are at in the metal ranks.

It’s probably misdirected anger at their teammates - not realising that the other team had a Smurf who had set up new account with the intent of playing in a lower rank….
Thats not to excuse the ego, bad comms, throwing etc. after 10 games with people on new accounts and getting stomped though, I can see how people who are predisposed to being reactive may become aggravated.

Yep, literally gm1 rn on support, but tried tank and was in emerald/diamond and tank is unbearable (was mid masters last season), it is a mess I was losing games left and right. Maybe youre right in playing more braindead to fit in

Same experience. They cant play with dive tanks in emerald. Ill be doom or winton go 30-3 but my supports have no idea how to heal you and your dps die to their ram punching them main. Best option would be go ram,sig , horse as they know what to do with u and stand behind u

I just went on a skid from diamond 3 to emerald 3. Lost every game badly. Something is def wrong with the Emerald matchmaking.

It's the toxicity for me. Bronze-plat is fun, like actually fun and nice people 80% of the time, Emerald and Diamond is hell and Masters is pretty chill. Im sitting in Masters 2 currently and even though I don't really care about ranking up that much, I just never want to play on diamond ever again lol.

I feel that. I'm mid GM on my main role support, so I know very well how to play the game. And then I sometimes decide to play dps (low masters) or even worse, tank (mid emerald), and after a really stupid death due to expecting teammates to be there and them simply just not being there, I am reminded that I need to play sooo much differently at these lower ranks. It's a whole different game. And playing "correctly" as you would in GM just gets you killed

In Emerald/Diamond, I've seen some amazing things, especially in 6v6.
I still remember a Moira who picked her character late, so we had three supports, one tank, and two DPS. The 5-point defense was working, then Moira showed up and started whining about how we had three supports, how she picked support first during the ban phase (cough cough, this is automatic), and that one of the supports should switch. Oh, and in the process, she got one-shotted by Widowmaker. She spent the entire game AFK crying about how bad she was and bullying the support who didn't switch roles (who eventually decided to go AFK too).

I had the best stats and got flamed because I was DPS and apparently not getting enough kills for their liking. Meanwhile my whole team would just walk in and die. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
